"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

What is obvious now is Labour can no longer avoid the immigration crisis - they need to urgently take a position because this is going to be the key issue of the day.

If I were the Tories I would be desperately trying to avoid it given the polling.

Public lack confidence in Conservatives to ‘stop the boats’ | YouGov

More than eight in ten believe the government is handling immigration badly

What reality?

Righties are great ones for making dark, unspecified threats that they can't explain.

And using words such as communism, progressive, babies, fetish and fact completely incorrectly.

The Right are destroying our language as well as our country and rights.😭

Fetish for many of them? What fetish and who is "them"?

"I hear you're a communist now @jgw!"

Yes, indeed. For posting verifiable facts.

Yeah, you said something about the script that you used to write. What are you talking about @Pollyputhekettleon?

Clone of what? A decent human being?

Remembermynamealways · 08/08/2023 20:24

The official number is actually 676,000 and most appear to be second homes and short lets.

Spain didn't

That's because Spain doesn't have an immigration problem, they just deport them.

"Almost all adults and children travelling with a family member arriving to mainland Spain by boat are detained for up to 72 hours in police facilities for identification and processing. The majority of adult men and women are then sent to an immigration detention centre for a maximum of 60 days, pending deportation."

Where does Vox get support from then? Or is this quick deportation policy a relatively new thing?

Genuinely curious as to how Labour has a hope in hell of doing any better??

I am all ears.

EffortlessDesmond · 08/08/2023 20:32

One post, not mine.

"I think the people whose mission it is to sabotage every solution or suggestion that's put forward to what is a complex problem on a massive scale, need to examine what their real motives are. I think you don't actually give a shit about the people themselves, or about the long term ramifications of how many migrants continue to arrive with nowhere to go. You are just obsessed with making life as difficult as possible for this government, at any cost. To prove what, I am not entirely sure."

And another, also not mine. Yet there are posters insisting that open borders is the only morally correct option, ignoring sensible moderate comments like...

"Just take a look at the moral superiority dripping from this post. The absolute contempt for anyone with a different view. Then these people wonder why the general public does not want to be lectured by them. Wonder if they realize how detached from reality they are and how they are shouting into the void, just hearing their own voice and feeling smug about it."

Unless politicians of any party can outline options that don't commit the middle earners and tax payers to shouldering the expense of housing anyone willing to take a 20 mile journey in an unseaworthy inflatable boat, then most people struggling with their own mortgages and utility bills are likely to take a dim view of increasing the burden on the tax payer.

Where is the UK's moral obligation to Iranians, who constitute one of the most numerous groups of migrants? We are not an Islamic country. We have not been involved in war with Iran. The repressive theocracy is one of Iranians' choosing.

Fortunately the link explains which other empty homes are not counted in the offical figures.

Twyford
It's about a barge that is designed to house people only to sleep and eat there... and where they are being paid large amounts to put up with those conditions

A property management company was considering using the barge as student accommodation in Galway (Ireland) in 2017. Presumably the students would have been paying to live there, albeit in a single room;

‘Floating’ accommodation for students being explored in Galway. Two ‘high end’ barges available if mooring location and permission can be secured.

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/floating-accommodation-for-students-being-explored-in-galway-1.3195047

where women will be surrounded by strange men

BBC -
The government say there will be no women or children on the barge, only single men aged 18-65.

In a general sense Labour will do better by not breaking the law, not lying to parliament, not crashing the economy and not having as two of its headline policies contradictory policies.

On the specifics of immigration a focus on accelerating the processing of asylum applications and the establishment of safe routes could be policies they adopt that would improve the situation.

Dymaxion · 08/08/2023 20:37

Maybe they might figure out a way to increase applications being processed ? Once you are processed and are allowed to stay, you can work, if you work you pay tax/NI and become a useful member of society. There is always lots of talk about the 'ageing population' so having some additional young fit people working might not be a bad thing ?

I agree with him.

I do aswell. What's the problem? These men are at the end of their application. Probably left their families behind. How entitled can they be?

You may be unfamiliar with the latest polling which suggests that people are taking a dim view of the government's policies on immigration.

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2023/08/08/public-lack-confidence-conservatives-stop-boats

The problem the government has is that they have been promising to do something about immigration for so long. Those who can see beyond the rhetoric realise that the solutions lie in safe routes and better processing. Those who have been persuaded to hate migrants for many years are probably wondering why there are more and more migrants.

@EffortlessDesmond Your view is now that of the majority of Europeans and it continues to grow year by year. The problem is that none of those people have ever been permitted to have a say in the international laws that affect their lives. It's a relatively temporary problem though. The tide is turning, slowly but surely.

That YouGov site shows a question today with ‘completely acceptable’ as top choice for

‘Do you think accommodation barges are an acceptable or unacceptable form of accommodation for asylum applicants?’

35%, then 24%

11 and 17 against

They have most definitely been here way over a year. They will either be moved to housing or they fail and are sent back.
