"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

I'm not even convinced that the government is as opposed to economic migrants as people here think. If it was, why is not making much more of an issue of overstayers and people who get in on false passports etc? I suspect they are well aware that we desperately need more people to work in the service industries, agriculture, care and the health service, and choose to turn a blind eye to a lot. They are just going for this issue because Sunak thinks it's a vote winner and that people won't notice who has been in power for over 13 years.

In the interests of factual accuracy about 180billion a year is spent on the NHS, so less than a fifth of a trillion pounds.

https://fullfact.org/health/half-trillion-nhs/

Shortly to reach a trillion - fact
We are spending billions on public services. We are spending billions on hotels housing young, healthy males.

If this is not addressed and fast by all parties this is going to explode, the COL is only adding more pressure.

Why do you think so many European countries are now voting for right wing parties?

The half-a-trillion NHS - Full Fact

Adding up five years’ worth of spending on the NHS to get a really big number doesn’t tell us very much.

We actually have an awful lot of empty properties around, e.g. in the form of disused offices.

The point is that we have to house genuine asylum seekers anyway, so that can't be part of the argument. So it makes much more sense to put in place an efficient asylum processing system so that we can weed out the the non-genuine claims and deport the people concerned. That way we don't have to put them in hotels, barges, or anywhere.

What on earth is wrong with that? Why aren't people asking the likes of Anderson, Braverman et al why that hasn't happened in the last 13 years?

At the risk of repeating myself there are more than a million empty homes in the UK.

And how many of them are inhabitable?

For those who do not want to open the link the Verdict of full fact on the half (note half not even a full trillion) claim.

"OUR VERDICTCorrect, but adding up five years’ worth of spending into one big figure isn’t particularly meaningful."

I believe she's referring to people's holiday homes. She's some variety of communist who wants to confiscate them to house her babies - adult migrant men. It's something of a fetish for many of them.

Can you link to this please. It’s total bs.
Of course if you are adding holiday let’s, second homes, houses bought by overseas investors, houses that are owned by people in hospital and hospices, houses being renovated, you might get close at a push.

Er have you forgotten how many were squeaking for PPE even teachers for heavens sake!

Dymaxion · 08/08/2023 20:08

But one may break the law in the manner of one’s arrival. The government have now legislated to ensure that those who do so will not be able to remain.

@AgathaSpencerGregson So why are they having to use the barge ? If everyone who arrives by small boat can be promptly popped back on an outbound ferry due to the Governments new legislation ? Perhaps there is an issue with the processing of claims, but that wouldn't account for it if those arriving by boat have no right to a claim due to the legislation you mention ?

Every single time a right wing government is lagging in the polls, in the lead up to an election, ‘illegal immigration’ is hyped as some sort of existential threat.

It doesn’t tend to matter that said right wing government has presided over the supposed crisis and offer no realistic policies to solve it.

If, by some miracle, the Tories cling to power, guaranteed the issue is placed on the political back burner again.

Frankly, it doesn’t benefit them to solve the issue, as they can always rely on making electoral hay out of it, and it’s not as if they care about the refugees themselves.

Remembermynamealways · 08/08/2023 20:10

What is obvious now is Labour can no longer avoid the immigration crisis - they need to urgently take a position because this is going to be the key issue of the day.

But it isn’t limited to 500 asylum seekers on a boat, you are comparing apples with pears there because there are a lot more than 500 currently being housed in hotels.

Nobody is making up the numbers. We’ve actually spoken to the hotel staff and seen the procurement contracts. £210 is a minimum figure, once you add in compulsory insurance premiums, the cost rocket.
And the figures going to increase next year as well with all of the imminent employment tribunal's coming up of hotel staff that haven’t been protected adequately, and assaulted and sexually harassed on these premises.

As for those suggesting this is Grenfell 2 waiting to happen, how utterly disrespectful to the dead lost in those terrible circumstances.

That is literally what this is about. The boat can't fit more than 500 people on board though I wouldn't put it past Braverman to try and it's being done at 20 times the cost of how they would normally be housed.

If you can't see that it's purely for the racist/Express optics there's really no hope for you.

If I found myself agreeing with racist dog-whistles from a proto-fascist government, I'd be seriously rethinking my life choices...

One useful snippet from actions from empty Homes ….. £1.2 billion national temporary accommodation bill.
obviously, if they don’t split the data into the indigenous population versus others, but that’s one hell of a bill

You don't even read your own link.... half a Trillion is done by adding up 5 years worth of spending!

Do you also think a nurse earns 150k per year? lol
