"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

You do know who owns YouGov, don't you?...

Did you ask the poster below who linked to it just beforehand the same question?

Or only when you disagree with the results?

Fine if you want to disregard but they also often put Labour ahead in some areas, so disregard that too

That's because Spain doesn't have an immigration problem, they just deport them.

"Almost all adults and children travelling with a family member arriving to mainland Spain by boat are detained for up to 72 hours in police facilities for identification and processing. The majority of adult men and women are then sent to an immigration detention centre for a maximum of 60 days, pending deportation."

They don't have a proocessing backlog then, unlike the Tory government

In a general sense Labour will do better by not breaking the law, not lying to parliament, not crashing the economy and not having as two of its headline policies contradictory policies.

On the specifics of immigration a focus on accelerating the processing of asylum applications and the establishment of safe routes could be policies they adopt that would improve the situation.

You really have to be joking!

What IS their policy on immigration? No one knows.
Of course things will become a million times worse.

At least the conservatives are trying to fix it, and what a battle it has been.

I am so deeply concerned for the future, and the unbearable pressure it is under.

Dymaxion · 08/08/2023 20:56

Unless politicians of any party can outline options that don't commit the middle earners and tax payers to shouldering the expense of housing anyone willing to take a 20 mile journey in an unseaworthy inflatable boat, then most people struggling with their own mortgages and utility bills are likely to take a dim view of increasing the burden on the tax payer.

Middle earners and tax payers ? What sort of income puts people in the middle earner bracket ?
Why do you think the Conservatives are going to put taxes up ? have they said they are going to increase them further ?

I seem to remember similar prophecies about brexit too.

How are they trying to fix it? And how is it going?

EffortlessDesmond · 08/08/2023 20:59

@Twyford, which vacant nicely decorated comfortable homes are you referring to? Locally there are 60+ applicants for any vacant let.

They are about to be sent home id hazard a guess

The rate of processing must have speeded up considerably then.

I see conservative plans, policies, court cases - at the very least they seem to acknowledge the disquiet and lack of appetite for more economic migrants.

Labour on the other hand have an open door policy.
How in gods name does that help us?

😂😂😂that has to be the single most nieve thing I have ever seen posted on mumsnet!

The tories have about as much intention of tackling the "migration crisis" (that they created) as the pope has intention of converting to Islam. It's so deeply concerning that you cannot see this for what it is.

Coming from someone that can’t even spell naive?

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2023 21:03

That the Tories have failed to control the borders is the issue. They've failed on immigration. They've failed on the economy. They've failed on housing. They've failed on the NHS. They've failed on Education. They've failed on women's and children's rights. They've failed on law and order.

Living in a Tory echo chamber and blaming everyone else isn't going to change that.

Absolutely this.

Yet now the Tory supporters are ignoring this and joining the rhetoric propaganda to blame everyone but the people who created this mess.

We do need a solution.

The Tories pushed Brexit for all the extra money for the NHS and taking back control of our borders.

They got Brexit. They've failed to deliver the benefits.

So now they are deflecting and blaming everyone else.

Yes - we need to stop these people traffickers taking money from people who are risking their lives to come here.

But a barge for 500 people that costs more than the hotels and doesn't make a dent in the 70k+ people they've failed to process isn't the answer.

Neither is swapping them for 200 Rwandan's at a cost of £140m.

It would have been a solution to have a centre for processing in France. Our government declined that.

They ARE NOT dealing with the problem they are using propaganda to make it seem like everyone else's fault when they've 'run' the country for 13 years.

No its true that the current Tory government has repeatedly broken its own laws, lied to parliament, crashed the economy last autumn and currently is pushing as its two main policies mutually contradictory policies.

You misremember.

In the run-up to the EU referendum, there were 14 separate occasions between 17 November and 17 June when the polls predicted a dead heat between the sides. (In all cases undecided voters have been excluded in these calculations.)

The What UK Thinks poll of polls, which looked at the average share of the vote for leave and remain across six polls at a time, shows that the pollsters were closest to the result in mid-June, when the polling average put the result at between 51% and 53% for leave.

@Remembermynamealways a few minutes ago you posted.

And yet now you know that Labour has an open door policy.

What did you read in those few minutes to find that out?

What are the Conservative plans? Rwanda? 'Stop the Boats'?

How is that going?

Lack of appetite for more economic immigrants, are you sure? Who will fill all the vacancies if not immigrants?

Economic migrants ? Like all the people they let in to work who have jobs here, so that nice American or Swiss chap who works in banking ? Or all those pesky foreign students who are helping subsidise those born here ? Or those Doctors and nurses who work in the NHS who come from abroad ?

IClaudine · 08/08/2023 21:14

Remembermynamealways do you understand what a manifesto is and when they are generally published?

I will spell it out. Right now Labour does not have to set out its policy on immigration or anything else if it doesn't wish to. Any sensible opposition party keeps much of its powder dry until a GE. Especially when we have a shambolic government void of any ideas of its own that aren't cruel or spiteful.

Just in case anyone thinks a trillion is spent on the NHS the cost last year was about 180billion.

Does that include the £350 million a week we were told about on the side of that bus?
