"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

Well if it's fine for the UK to adopt a 'fuck off back to where you came from', it follows that it must also be ok for everyone else too.

So we fuck them off to France, France fucks them off to Italy, Italy fucks them off to Greece, Greece fucks them off to Turkey, and Turkey fucks them off straight back to where they came from originally where the bombs/famines/genocidal theocracies and Caliphates are.

Everything is just grand then 👏

Someone on another thread shared the government's latest plan to reduce the number of asylum cases they are considering - simply remove people from the list and let them remain in the UK.

@BiscuitsandPuffin
No refugee is required to stay in the first safe country they get to. And many have familial, cultural, linguistic, historical ties to the UK. Most refugees, in the 90 plus percentage range, go to the nearest safe adjoining country to their own so Turkey, Pakistan, Jordan have millions and millions of refugees.

What a breathtakingly crass response to what @BiscuitsandPuffin posted. So refugees=good but the response to the lived experience of someone forced to sleep rough after escaping an abusive relationship, when a child (in the last year of school) is 'these refugees are more important than you'?

I think Biscuits experience is all too common - there aren't enough shelters, more and more people sleeping rough or sofa surfing and who can't afford food / housing.

I suspect there will be a large number of voters to whom whether or not the free accommodation and free food offered to asylum seekers is luxurious enough will be way down the list of priorities below obtaining / affording accommodation and food for themselves and their children.

The only way to make people care is to improve their situation, and that isn't happening, and although the Tories are to blame I see no coherent plan from Labour that they'd do any better with the kicker that children's and women would no longer have human rights as a point of policy (rather than just what's happening on the ground because the law isn't being enforced).

It's really difficult to see how anything will ever get better. I do wonder why people want to come here still, given it's so shit.

They mystery here is why so many people here also don't want her to do it, and instead favour stupid initiatives like the barge and Rwanda which, even if they come to full fruition, will affect a tiny, tiny minority of claims, cost a fortune, and will do nothing to resolve the problem. No-one seems able to answer that

That's entirely about creating an artificial crisis, stoking up ire over it, then 'riding to the rescue' by coming up with some utterly pointless solution to a non-existent problem that placates the frothing mess you've created. The frothers then run out and vote for you because you 'tackled' the non-existent issue that you would them up about.

Yet again, Trumpian divide and conquer in action.

That's entirely about creating an artificial crisis

It’s not artificial and it will become increasingly an issue due to mass displacement, which admittedly is only just being talked about properly. The direction of where this is going is not with you.

Oh dear @AbyssiniaArms ! Attacking people who give facts and don’t agree with your standpoint …oh dear 🤣🤣hilarious

Unfortunately @Vinvertebrate didn't give us any facts, though. And @AbyssiniaArms' question was an entirely valid one, inconvenient as you may find it.

No we can’t!!
Have you not noticed we are still struggling to house the million or so genuine refugees from Ukraine, Hong Kong and Afghanistan??

We have hundreds of thousands of people in temporary housing already.

The immigration backlog has been caused by our kindness and compassion to support the poor people ravaged from actual wars not the trafficker drug dealer trying his luck!

We need to look after the people that are here and in dire straits with nowhere to live. We have run out of housing stock ages ago in most areas in southern and western England. We can not take anyone else, and certainly not boat loads of relatively wealthy men looking for a better life style/council house whilst they work and rinse the system.

Wake up!!!!

There are over a million empty homes in the UK. Many of them 2nd homes that are lived in for a few weeks a year.

We do not have a housing problem in the UK, we have a weath distribution problem.

RadishAndTwiglet · 08/08/2023 18:42

They're getting closer and closer to the glory days of the National Front.

Who, the Tories? No. I think you'll find that is actually France.

ilovebrie8 · 08/08/2023 17:22

@AbyssiniaArms the poster told you her DH volunteers and surprise surprise most are economic migrants ! Now you don’t like that and turn nasty as what she said doesn’t suit your narrative…

I think most of us can work out how little value second hand anecdotal evidence from one centre has, so I rather doubt that @AbyssiniaArms is in the least upset. It's a shame you can't work that one out.

Remembermynamealways · 08/08/2023 18:43

Why are people opposing unsafe accommodation that costs MORE than the hotels all assumed to be "lefties".

I love near an immigration and deportation centre that closed in 2006 and to become a prison. Then didn't become a prison and is reopening in a few months. It'll house 600 men.

But it's safe and built for this purpose and this capacity.

What I have an issue with is the amount of money spent on propaganda campaigns about "stopping the boats" rather than on processing asylum claims, deporting those who aren't genuine and working with France to - you know - actually stop the boats

Oh for heavens sake wake up.

The reality is that we can not house everyone in the world that wants to live here. We ran out of space and housing a long time ago.

I am delighted to welcome Afghan, Ukrainian and HK families, most people do.

I can not and will not ever support people traffickers and criminals using illegal routes to take advantage purely to improve their financial situation! For every pound that is being wasted on economic migrants could have been spent on those truly in peril. It’s a bloody disgrace and has to stop.

The right to asylum was originally intended to be a right to asylum in the nearest safe country. The average naive citizen of western countries still believes that to be the case. They've been deliberately allowed to remain confused about this, because the alternative might involve them asking some rather awkward questions about why exactly none of us have never been allowed to have a democratic vote on the issue. You're quite right, nothing about that is grand.

Oh look. The problem has been solved. Why didn’t anyone think to take people’s second homes and give them away. D’oh. MN is not only detached from the real world. It’s actually its own planet.

They know it will also force Labour to say how they would house migrants and that their plans won't be a vote winner.

yes - does anyone know what Labour’s plans for migrants are?

Well I hope their plan is to speed up processing. Most of these people end up with permission to stay so let them start working, earning their own keep, helping the economy and build a life for themselves.

oviraptor21 · 08/08/2023 18:45

Given that single homeless men in our area are usually given tents so that they can sleep out in the local parks, I can't get too exercised about the accommodation being offered to asylum seekers.

It’s not even about it being a vote winner. It’s the level of debate you expect from a 12 year old when they first discover economics as a topic.

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2023 18:46

Remember. I'm awake thanks. Awake and literate enough to have been able to read the Home offices own report that 3/4 of people who arrive in small boats and claim asylum are genuine.

But I'm sure it suits you to think they are all risking their lives for £10 a week, horrid living conditions and years waiting for their claims to be processed.

I agree!
Let’s speed up processing by declining all applications until the actual refugees in this country already have somewhere to live! We need to house the million or so that have just arrived!!!

Its communist to point out that there are more empty homes in the UK than families that are in desperate need of a home?

RadishAndTwiglet · 08/08/2023 18:47

The Fire Brigade said the barge was unsafe and could become another Grenfell Tower. Any accommodation in the UK should be safe and meet legislation.

That's practically a green light invitation for some idiot to set fire to it on purpose to prove a point. I'd put money on it.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 18:48

jgw1 · 08/08/2023 18:35

You seem a little confused about the laws and the UK governments application of it.
Here is a helpful explainer.

https://levinslaw.co.uk/dinghies-in-the-channel-illegal-entrants-and-immigration-offences/

If it is a bit long, scroll down and read the summary.

That is the article I originally brought to your attention, I believe. It does not say that asylum claimants have a right to claim asylum where they choose. To say that is as untrue as saying that claimants have to claim asylum in the first safe country they arrive in. That is only one factor which can be taken into account in determining which country should deal with the asylum claim.

Remembermynamealways · 08/08/2023 18:48

Actual question: why on earth is ANYONE supporting more illegal migrants arriving here? Why?

CloudyMcCloud · 08/08/2023 18:48

jgw1 · 08/08/2023 18:43

If the Prime Minister is so determined as he says to stop the boats, why is he also so determined to increase climate change and thereby add to migration?

That’s a bit facile tbh

Generally a country needs to get its security together - including energy. However a lot of people aren’t really thinking ahead.

All of this is a given, mass displacement will happen, and people will demand change. Whether international systems can handle those demands we’ll see.
