"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

I am not ignoring the « finer points of law ».You are ignoring the parts of the article which set out clearly the reasons why channel crossings may involve commissions of offences.

And another thing that the racists spouting their "we're paying for 5 star hotels for them" (have they ever stayed in a Travelodge?) nonsense are wilfully ignoring, is the fact that this government are paying 1.5 BILLION pounds of our money for this barge for just TWO YEARS of operation. Of course, all that money is going to Tory donors, so that's fine obviously...

The Travelodge would charge you and I £70 a night to stay in one of their rooms. For many many completely understandable reasons, they charge the government triple that to House refugees. So literally, they are paying the equivalent of a five star hotel, and sometimes they are paying an actual five star hotel who I would imagine would charge more than triple to cover the inevitable damage to their property.

Where I am, the reality is that schools aren't full and schools are seriously worried about how that is affecting their finances. They would be delighted to take in more refugees.

I was specifically talking about teachers

Because they are entitled to come here by law?

What law gives them that entitlement?

Yes which is exactly what is happening in the rest of Europe (especially the Nordic countries where they keep burning Korans).

We need to make sure that we stop the boats coming or racism is going to get a lot worse.

MsJinks · 08/08/2023 18:12

The barge, if filled, costs more per person than a hotel would - contracts are agreed via that amazing model of the PPE fast track system I think. It’s also not going to house that many. It doesn’t save cash, it isn’t going to resolve hotel issue - it’s all about the dog whistle to gain voters.
If they’d invested in asylum it wouldn’t be in this state - it’s been allowed to get in this state. It’s a convenient ruse to rile up folk for votes. No one cares about the huge numbers of folk who arrive legally then overstay and become illegal, no one bothers about asylum seekers entering on other irregular routes - why not? It’s not the great visual supporting the dog whistling is it.
These asylum seekers, whatever your opinion, are being used by the current government for their own ends - that is as abhorrent as housing people on an unsafe barge. And don’t forget they’d use you the same if it would work for their agenda.
Its deeply saddening that we have categories of people - ultimately I do think people will move more and more - they’ve always moved - and this ideally needs addressing globally as to how we can support all humans to live safely be it war or climate change - I know that’s a naive view and I expect we’ll just have even more categorising though - so sad.

Most of Europe's next election experiences are likely to see migration issues as central to the debate.

Germany used the Bibby Stockholm to accommodate displaced people too. I haven't seen any suggestions that their emergency services raised safety concerns.

On a more positive note, the men housed on the barge will be able to enjoy the antics of a large pod of dolphins that regularly play in Portland Harbour.

That's because the Germans didn't overcrowd it. And it was moored in the city of Hamburg, not a wee port.

Maybe have a go at the maths yourself.

And the only reason they are paying the hotels so much is because, shock horror, the hotel owners seem to be conservative donors...

Let us not forget the fake PPE contracts.

Racists aren't interested in how much much money their precious CONservatives happily gave over to their chums.

Instead, brown men are the enemy.

I despair. I really wonder how these people dress themselves.

Twyford · 08/08/2023 18:16

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 17:12

The problem is that any attempt to adopt a much more stringent approach is likely to fall foul of the numerous legal challenges that are mounted on behalf of claimants (funded by you and me).

They only fall foul of legal challenges if their actions are in fact illegal. A fact that our legally trained Home Secretary seems to struggle to grasp.

She could of course resolve the problem relatively easily by taking up the offer of an asylum processing centre in France, and an efficient asylum processing system here. But she doesn't think that makes for a nice vote-winning soundbite, plus it would actually involve some effort on her part, so she doesn't want to do it.

They mystery here is why so many people here also don't want her to do it, and instead favour stupid initiatives like the barge and Rwanda which, even if they come to full fruition, will affect a tiny, tiny minority of claims, cost a fortune, and will do nothing to resolve the problem. No-one seems able to answer that.

What law gives them that entitlement?

They changed the laws on this over the last several decades, very quietly, so most people are unaware of it. There's a reason they did it very far from the prying eyes of any democratic process.

Iwasafool · 08/08/2023 18:18

roarrfeckingroar · 08/08/2023 15:32

His point is that this is free accommodation with free food etc for supposedly desperate people. The conditions will be better than many brits live in (yes a problem in itself). Why are we expected to provide 5 star accommodation to anyone who comes here claiming asylum? It's better than a refugee camp.

I think the fire service are saying they should have safe accommodation. Haven't heard anyone saying they should have 5 star accommodation.

I’m perfectly capable of doing the maths thank you.

Housing anybody in a hotel on a long-term basis is not very cost-effective. So they need to process quickly. Wherever they’re going to house them. But it is not a mess to suggest that asylum seekers are enjoying a better quality of life than the indigenous population at least in the short-term.

just out of interest have these people been given the option to fuck off back to France?

I wonder how many of them might take it once they’d had a quick look around the UK ?

I am aware of that, thank you. The article discusses the potential for commission of offences under domestic law by people who seek to enter the country by dinghy from France.
as the article makes clear, the CPS do not prosecute where it seems likely to do so would contravene international law. That is an application of the so-called public interest test in the code for crown prosecutors. There is evidence of sufficient strength to justify prosecution, but the prosecution is not in the public interest.
the article also makes clear that such entrants may commit offences relation to documents, deception etc under uk immigration law.
Finally, it should be noted that the article discusses the law as it stood prior to the enactment of recent legislation which will make the position tougher in a number of respects.

Radish and Twiglet
Making things difficult for the Government....Fancy that. Why...you're not entirely sure.
Well you see, and reading this thread might give you a clue, not everybody likes the Tory Government, a lot of people think they're not making life any better for the people of this country....

Iwasafool · 08/08/2023 18:19

Just as a side can I ask if anyone knows if we are getting our money back from Rwanda if that scheme is off.

Remembermynamealways · 08/08/2023 18:19

It’s going to be very interesting watching this play out, the lefties genuinely seem to have NO IDEA of the reality.

This issue is going to come to the surface and surprise a lots of people.

Wsmi · 08/08/2023 18:20

Like it’s been said already, MN is a bubble cut off from the real world. In MN world the majority are genuine asylum seekers, and everyone who questions is is racist. These people are totally cut off from the majority vote that has been in line with what Lee Anderson is saying.

The fact that Tories have failed to control the borders is another issue. But what the majority vote for is clear. Living in an echo chamber and shouting ‘racist’ at everyone doesn’t change that.

No, they did not. There is no law giving anyone the right to claim asylum in the UK specifically; although we have made specific arrangements for some groups eg Hong Kong and Ukraine

Twyford · 08/08/2023 18:20

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 17:13

im sure it’s nicer to be near people you know, but that’s not fleeing persecution.

Suppose, God forbid, you were in that position and had to leave your home and everything you know in fear of your own and your family's life. Traumatised, terrified, having lost virtually everything you have, you have the legal choice to go to a country where you know no-one and don't speak the language, or another country where perhaps you do know a few people and do speak the language. Which are you going to choose? Why would it be wrong to opt for the one where you will be able to settle in more easily?

Fuckingfuming1 · 08/08/2023 18:21

It’s not a case of the lefties, genuinely have no idea they genuinely do have lots of ideas as to what the issues are going to be.
The problem is what actually do you want to do with these people because they aren’t going away?

The natural solution appears to be what we’ve done in Ukraine. Try and help them to stay in their own country. What’s the Tories stance on that?

AbyssiniaArms · 08/08/2023 18:22

Iwasafool · 08/08/2023 18:18

There is no international agreement that anyone seeking asylum should have 5 star accommodation. 🙄

@roarrfeckingroar prefers to think this is the reality so she can remain angry.

ilovebrie8 · 08/08/2023 18:22

The barge is clean and dry etc as another person mentioned earlier if they were still in France it would be a tent in a muddy field if that. Look at the people here living in mould and damp conditions they’d be happy with this am sure.
