To have bought myself.........

50 years old, and i bought a Sindy house.
I was desperate for a Sindy house as a child and never had one. I saw an immaculate one on Ebay with every wonder you can imagine inside it.
Oh, the joy of the tiny salt and pepper. The detail in the teeny knives, etc.
What toy were you desperate for, and did you ever get it.

I wanted one of them little slushie makers that was always advertised on tv and a Raleigh chopper.

SproutLady · 09/08/2023 04:31

When I was six, I longed for a Sindy house, but my dad was appalled at the price—so he made me one. With wallpaper and carpets just like our house. I loved it so much. I don’t have children, so a few years ago I gave it to my friend’s little girl. It’s amazing playing with it with her. Look at the hostess trolley! I think you can find them on eBay?

That’s amazing Sproutlady.

Mine should have a lift but it never worked well so I didn’t attach it when I set it up again for DD.

I loved Lego as a child but DM gave it all away - I also loved my dolls house so am now combining the 2 with adult Lego
we swap it around with the seasons - currently building the boutique hotel - toy shop is next on the list

That's awesome!

I had a Mobo rocking horse - the one with springs that would trap your fingers. I passed it on to my much younger cousins who kept it outside and it rusted then got flattened by a car reversing up the drive. When I was 35 DH bought me one for Christmas. My kids loved it. When I was expecting my 5th baby I had everything I needed left over from previous pregnancies. My aunt and uncle and my parents clubbed together and bought a massive Mamas and Papas rocking horse with wooden rockers. It belongs to my youngest but of course lives in our house! I still hanker for a dapple grey wooden horse though!

I collect vintage bears and soft toys but one buy last year brought me to tears. When I was 6 my DF who had been away in Hong Kong with work brought me an amazing toy dog. It was about the size of a chihuahua, possibly a bit bigger, and was startlingly realistic. I loved it so much. When I was approaching my teens my DM cleared my room and the dog went into a box in the shed. Sadly it was attacked by moths/mice and had to be thrown away. Then, last summer, I saw an almost identical dog on Ebay and had to have it. When it arrived it looked, felt and even had the same smell as my "Patch". It was like having a bit of my dad back again.

Well .........i have a SIMON! Anyone remember them? I saw it in a charity shop a year or so and couldn't resist. Always wanted a cadbury chocolate machine and a stretch armstrong😁

I adored my Simon, I played with it endlessly. I had a PacMan as well.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 09/08/2023 13:27

Awwww that's so awesome! That's just the sort of thing I'd love to do but wouldn't ever do, so I'm 'proud' of you OP (for want of a better, less patronising term!)

Enjoy it! 🌸

On my mother’s deathbed I made her laugh by telling her that I was bitter that I never got the Barbie camper van I was promised. I’m 51 and still think about it.

My daughter is getting rid of hers. You can have it if you want.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 08/08/2023 06:51

I bought one from eBay a few years ago - I loved it. My dd was only into Barbie though. Sindy was so much better. Her dining table with silver candelabra was class.

I had that dining table and a sideboard with silver cutlery.

You could save Sindy love heart tokens to get free items like Sindy's friend June. I did this. It seemed to take months to arrive.

Daysafter · 09/08/2023 23:22

I loved my Sindy doll. Had her bf Paul, little sister Patch and best friend Mitzi from France. Had the red sports car also. Loved Sindy so much I named my dog after, she's now 8.

switswoo81 · 09/08/2023 23:28

Probably outing my location but my dad worked in the factory that made SIndy and every time anything new came on the line all the workers were given one so I had everything the dream house, a car, a little apartment that opened up. Plus he would often bring home extra furniture.
I was living my best 7 year old life!

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 09/08/2023 23:30

sounds perfect! We had a Sindy hospital which I loved as a child. What I always wanted though was He-Man figure’s especially Skeletor.

Lesina · 09/08/2023 23:32

A horse and now i have two :)

dayswithaY · 08/08/2023 16:32

Does anyone remember Sasha dolls? I’d love one now.

Yes! Me and my sisters have some of these. I’ve still got my two.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/08/2023 23:39

For some reason I wanted a Lego petrol station. God knows why!

My parents weren’t buying into stereotypes for boys and girls, but they bought me a Lego castle instead. For some reason I really wanted that petrol station 😂😂 Which may well shave been cheaper!

So I guess the moral is that kids want what they want even if it makes no sense

Zipps · 09/08/2023 23:46

I really wanted a chopper bike like my dbro, never got one, but as an adult I have motorbikes.
Also wanted sticker books got loads now.
And years ago DH bought me one of those dogs that bark and do a somersault because I kept going on about how much I wanted one as a child.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 10/08/2023 02:01

Toys I never got....

Girls World ( not at all interested in make up -ever)

Cadbury 2p choc dispenser

Mr Frosty - have heard others say its rubbish

Mousetrap- mam said it would take to long to setup so I was 25+ when I realised setting it up WAS the game!

Etcha sketch -with the maze insert!

Dragster - where you flicked a ball bearing round a course , which would push your cars down the course to win.

I did get the Jem doll, but light up earrings didn't last long before they broke!

The only toy I remember being rather upset at not getting was a Get Along Gang Dotty dog (just like the pic) for some reason! I would have also fancied Ghost Castle which I didn't get either (probably because like most games in our house it would end up getting flung across the room by my sore loser sibling), but i remember having some tears over that dog 😄 Not fussed about her now, sorry Dotty!

DD has 2 of my My Little Ponies and a big box of lego my mum saved in the loft.

Now singing 'the get-along gang, get along!' Classic!

LordSalem · 10/08/2023 02:30

My mum tipped my Victorian Playmobil Mansion (with an extra storey). It was worth a lot. Still fuming. I had wanted to restore it.

LordSalem · 10/08/2023 02:33

As for PP mentioning Mr Frosty, I bought one as an Xmas present for DD a couple of years ago. It broke internally the first time we tried to use it 🤬
It worked great back in the 90s!

Kabbalah · 10/08/2023 02:41

Nintendo Gameboy. And yes I got one. And I still have it.

Photos please 🤩 I still have most of my old Sindy stuff and Pippa dolls!!

My Pippa doll had the most fantastic purple flares - I wrote to Jim'll Fix It asking him to fix it for me to have the same outfit

He didn't reply! (Luckily!)

ChristmasCwtch · 10/08/2023 05:01

I’ve been browsing eBay for all of my old favourites..

MLP stable
Poochie
Secret Keypers
Glow worm
Care Bears
Cabbage Patch Kid
Fold up post office

I used to have a little round compact with a jewel in the middle and when you opened it, the arms and legs popped out. Any ideas what they were called?

I really wanted the Sindy boutique. It was £35 in the Argos catalogue in 1987ish. There were clothes rails and tiny plastic carrier bags.

Mr Frosty never worked!!

I adored my Simon, I played with it endlessly. I had a PacMan as well.

I had a Simon as well as a Munchman (my parents got that instead of Pac-Man as it was cheaper); my brother had a silver Space Invaders electronic game and, when I was in my late 20’s or early 30’s, I found them in the cupboard at my parents house. Munchman still worked and I kept it going for a few years before it disappeared (I think my brother took it!). I also, over the years had Speak & Spell, My Little Professor and another ‘educational’ electronic game thing (can’t for the life of me remember what it was!) as they were allowed because you could learn with them!

Like so many others, I wanted Mr Frosty but my parents wouldn’t buy it despite going on my Christmas list for years - so glad now when I hear how crap it was!!

As an adult in my late 20’s, I bought all the Chalet School books published by Armada, in an attempt to relive my childhood. They were still available in Waterstones and WHSmith then and, each month, I would buy 1-2 titles. Later on my brother chucked out the box that they were in not realising they had been my precious stash. So, now I’m in my 50’s and I’m slowly
collecting them all again - I started
off with the Armada paperbacks again but, this time, I’m aiming to get all the unabridged titles so am buying the original 1950’s/60’s Chamber hardbacks and the reprints by GGBP. I think I’m probably 1/2 way there but have to be careful as, instead of paying £2-£5 per book for the Armada collection (except some of the rarer titles that cost up to £25 each), you can end up paying £50-60 for the original Chambers hardbacks even in poor condition😱

ChocolateCinderToffee · 10/08/2023 05:09

Not a toy but I desperately wanted a birthday cake with my name on in icing like everyone else got. I was 42 when I finally got one.
