"Congratulations, we are happy if you are"

How would you take this?

Currently pregnant with our fourth & final child. First time seeing MIL since the announcement where she'd previously asked if we were happy about it, insinuating it may have been an accident (this baby is very much planned and loved).

Anyway, this congratulations was what I was greeted with today. Is this totally backhanded or AIBU?

I'm quite surprised by some of the responses.

A pregnancy isn't always good news, so 'congratulations' isn't always the appropriate reply.

It's usually obvious which way to go, though, based on the expressions and words of the person telling you. Do you think when you told MIL that you presented as really happy about it, or was there room for doubt?

I completely agree with you.

My wonderful doctor asked me each time 'and how do you feel about that?' when I went to see him to be booked in for each pregnancy. Truly the most helpful comment and didn't pre-suppose how I should be feeling.

With respect the relationship is completely different with your own Dr and nothing like telling your MIL.

Congratulations on the pregnancy! I remember your thread wondering about whether to have a fourth, really happy for you! I'm now the one mulling this over - another lady on the thread went with a puppy and I'm thinking maybe that's the way to go if we settle on three and done 😊Hope the pregnancy goes well and try to zone out your passive aggressive, judgy cow MIL! X

Ouch. Golly, yes that's unpleasant, does she often open her mouth without putting her brain into gear? 😳
But genuine congrats from here anyway!
Not that it's any consolation, but I once told my father and stepmother I was coming to see them and that I had some good news to tell them (pregnancy with second much wanted son) and when I actually told him, my father said "so what's the GOOD news?..... 🤔
