I don't know what it is but I follow quite a lot of Instagram bloggers /vloggers and have noticed this lately
"Summer isn't summering"
"July isn't julying"
Honestly it's driving me mad
Is it just me who's noticed this stupidity?

Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?

Is that you Henry Higgins?

Yep the stupidest generation by far!! Read yesterday about a kid not wanting to go back to college, back to a dirty room to do chores and didn't want to do ",adulting" anymore!! Wanted to stay at home....... Possibly the most immuture generation ever, in the 70/80s at 21/22 you were an adult running your own home with a child. Now they don't want to do adulting and would prefer to stay at home and spend on nails, lip fillers fake tan, clothes and showing off on Instagram.....can't do that when you're running your own home!!

Ok boomer Grin

Actually I was at Uni in the late 80s having a wonderful time. Studying, travelling, exploring. I can't imagine anything worse than being stuck at home with babies aged 21/22. Urrgh. Yuck. Just because you did that doesn't mean everyone did.

Has anyone noticed the amount of people who use brought instead of bought?
This winds me up too

Or people using amount when they mean number! The English language is doomed etc etc.

Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?

Ah yes, slang, a disease peculiar to the English! Fwiw my children are fluent in correct English and teen slang and are pretty decent at Spanish. As an MFL teacher who teaches 3 foreign languages and has done lots of exchange trips, I can't say I've noticed that their students avoid slang.

As PPs have said, languages change and evolve. I hadn’t heard Platty Joobs before reading this thread, but it reminds me of 1920s slang, e.g. the Pragger Wagger for the Prince of Wales. 😀 Maybe we should bring that one back.

I quite enjoy hearing new turns of phrase. Of course I find some words and expressions annoying, as I expect most people do. It also worries me that the average vocabulary of English speakers continues to shrink. English is the richest language in the world. It’s a shame that most people have such a limited vocabulary.

I'm sorry how is this allowed but anytime anyone says something about old people it's taken down for being ageist because lots of posters have a meltdown? 🤨

Yeah I'm sure if anyone made a horrible offensive generalisation about @Emz6103 's generation she would be the first to whine about it.

@Emz6103 huge generalization. The thread is about people using stupid words. I hate the phrase adulting. But I won't discount a whole generation.

phoenixrosehere · 06/08/2023 19:04

As long as I have an idea of what someone saying, I’m not particularly bothered about how and if I’m unsure, I ask for clarification or what something means.

Being judgemental about it helps very little.

crostini · 06/08/2023 19:07

Ok id not heard cozzy livs before - I find that very amusing.

VinEtFromage · 06/08/2023 19:09

Nuca · 06/08/2023 10:52

Also reminds me of the weird phrases posters use on the style and beauty board. ‘Large of nork’ and ‘large of tummy’ are recent once I’ve noticed being used a lot. Just say big boobs!

@Nuca because I have brain fog, I can't remember the origin of 'large of nork' but it's been a MN phrase for almost 2 decades!

but @ohbloodyhellll I see some phrases on here that have my eyes rolling HSRD!

but one way to fix the majority of it, is to really cull your SM.

i just couldn't cope with it!

studentgrant · 06/08/2023 22:45

I wouldn't call any generation stupid, but I do loathe the phrase "fur baby" for cat. It makes me irrational and just think "oh grow up!"!

CatchHimDerry · 06/08/2023 23:00

I find it really amusing, and interesting socially too!

Platty Joobs and Cozzie Livvs I found hilarious and quite clever in a strange sort of way 😂

Some of it is ridiculous though. Nearly always Instagram influencer fakery.
Thinks like “mmmm kay” or “okkkurrrrr” for ok etc

MasterBeth · 06/08/2023 23:04

Mmmm Kay is from South Park. It's a deliberately invented stupid phrase like Simples or Whassssuuuuup.

EmeraldDuck · 06/08/2023 23:07

Aye, verily, changes to our fair language art v’ry annoying. I despise mod’rnity, forsooth.

xPeaceXx · 06/08/2023 11:11

Summer isn't summering? I like that one! I will avoid annoying people who've heard it twenty times already by repeating it myself but ha! I actually like that one.

I'm 53 and I'm finding adulting quite hard. Can't wait for pensioning.

Pensioning's easier than adulting because working doesn't get in the way!
Why the dislike of adulting on a site obsessed with parenting which is just as stupid and false?

CatchHimDerry · 06/08/2023 23:08

@MasterBeth oh is it? Never watched that so hadn’t realised

ScandiCushion · 06/08/2023 23:26

Can't wait for pensioning. Love this!

"Parent" as a verb is used on here all the time. "Parent your child properly" etc. Surely that's "wrong" too.

I love platty joobs, cozzy livs etc. I think the British are great at stuff like this. It's funny and informal and unites people and makes them laugh.

JudgeJ · 06/08/2023 23:27

SerafinasGoose · 06/08/2023 16:41

Because they expect to foist the job onto the school, why should parents have to bother??

Some phrases annoy me. But now I've read this thread I'm more concerned about turning into a miserable old git.
