I'm not entirely sure where to head here.

It has been going on for years. I receive her FB notifications, the odd email addressed to her. Now my storage is 98% full - this makes me thinks it involves both accounts.

I'll explain as easily as I can - say my Gmail is google.user @ Gmail . Com
Hers is googleuser @ Gmail. Com

She lives in America in a town that has the same name as a UK town and we both have the same name. The only difference is the . in the email.

I've looked at how to report. It doesn't seem like any scam as it's being going so long. Imagine she is mabelsmithtown and I am mabelsmith.town

I don't know where to start with getting in touch. I tried to email her and it came back to me!

Sorry, boring for a Saturday night but surely there is something amiss and wrong here.
I first noticed when getting Facebook notifications thinking, I don't know that person. But I can't find her on Facebook either.
It's highly unlikely that I've 98% filled my Gmail.

Just looking for thoughts or how someone can help me get in touch with someone?

I kept getting random gmails for an American family because they kept mistyping their own gmail address - generally political party flyers and Bed Bath and Beyond type sign ups. A bit of sleuthing and they were easy to find (and see their actual gmail address). It stopped when their hospital started emailing me - I replied saying that they had the given the hospital the wrong email and the hospital should make sure it was updated. Not a sausage since.

I used to work for a company with 45,000 employees. One of my colleagues was trying to send a light hearted email to Ian in the labs but emailed Iain instead. Turns out Iain was a rather lovely single guy who responded in kind. Reader, she married him.

Yeah!!!

I read a entire article somewhere on people mistyping others email addresses and meeting up to go for dinner including yearly etc but this is the first marriage.

God as if this thread wasn't already mad, now OP has gone off spouting drunken nonsense 😂

Throckmorton · 08/08/2023 11:00

@MNHQ - Classics please!

unvillage · 08/08/2023 11:19

Fucking hell this is just embarrassing now

iamrageohtheresakitty · 08/08/2023 11:59

I am really invested in OP sobering up and confirming that she understands what we've been saying

IDontNormallySayThis · 08/08/2023 13:23

I keep coming back for updates (not sure why I'm so invested), but the thread certainly doesn't disappoint!

@MNHQ - Classics please!

My skateboarding cousin Throckmorton? Is that you?!

But yes, agree. In years to come we will be starting our posts "been here for years, was there when the lady couldn't understand gmail then went off in a drunken rant" 😂

Sadly not - I wish I could skateboard!😀

OnionBhajis · 08/08/2023 18:35

Yes I verr between hoping the less drunk op comes back to her senses...

... and wanting to add my own fake "I keep getting emails to my address because of the dot " too posts!

He was a skater boy
She said, "See you later, boy"
He wasn't good enough for her
She had a pretty face
But her head was up in space
She needed to come back down to earth...

Hahaha @Throckmorton I wasn't sure if you're name was a reference to this picture 🤣

She doesn't have her email address!

bangs head on desk

TookTheBook · 09/08/2023 07:49

She's just giving out the wrong email address constantly OP. I'm not sure why that is so hard to understand.

It happens so often to people using their actual names in email addresses. She probably forgot she's actually MFJones not MJones and keeps registering for stuff using the wrong address (your address).

You can do what you like with the wrong emails - delete them all, no idea why you have been keeping them and filling up your account?!

LaRevolution · 09/08/2023 09:02

Ahh this is such a cracking thread. I knew about the (Mumsnet) dot but didn't know about the + sign and any other word thing - that's a gamechanger! I could re-set up the kids' bastard Minecraft accounts like that and just set a rule to filter them into separate folders. Thanks Gmail crew 😁

This happened to me. I think it happens to everyone with fairly standard issue names that managed to get firstname dot surname at gmail. As previous people have said, they are giving out your email address, or people are typing the wrong email address in.

If you are seeing someone else's email address in the to bar and it's not your email address with a different dots arrangement, or your email appended by +something (which should have a 'yes this is you! note after it in the gmail web client with a link to a support page which covers it all), it is because your address is in the BCC field which is why you can't see it. It's not a "google glitch".

Eventually the idiot who couldn't remember their own email address applied for jobs with my email address on the form, so I got an acknowledgement email which also included their phone number, so I texted them to let them know.
It turned out that their email address was actually firstnamesurname123 or something and they 'kept forgetting the 123 lol can you forward on the job info please x'
the second time it happened mean humpty suggested that it would be a better learning experience if I didn't. They got quite annoyed but stopped putting my email address into forms at least.

Franticbutterfly · 09/08/2023 14:08

Same thing happens to me. I get a lady in LA's business emails, invoices, and most weirdly, round Robin emails that she is also on. I know all about her health challenges (she's been having treatment for cancer for a while, but thankfully is feeling better), her friends, I get pics of the family, invites to events...I have told her so many times and responds with "I'm so glad I have a new friend across the pond".

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 05/08/2023 23:15

No she isn't using my address and the emails that come through are for her

I.e there is no. . There, no misspelling, no mistake they come through with her email address.

I have exactly the same issue. My email has full stops in, the other person's doesn't. This problem is not recent and has been going on for at least 10 years

Is your email Gmail or not?

If your email providers is gmail then they are using your email address. If it is not then they aren't.

Either way they aren't giving people their own email address.

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7436150?hl=en#zippy=%2Cno-one-can-take-your-username

This explains it well.

Although the + thing is new to me - what's that?

I've used it to give myself unique usernames when I register for different sites. So if your email address is [email protected] you could sign up for mumsnet with onionbhajis+[email protected] for example and it would still go to you.

It means that if you get spam to that address you know that mumsnet have sold it / had a data leak, and it adds a little security by meaning that by knowing your email address people don't know your username you use to log on to all sites.

It works quite well, but some sites won't accept the + character in an email address.

JC are we still not understanding!?
