I'm not entirely sure where to head here.

It has been going on for years. I receive her FB notifications, the odd email addressed to her. Now my storage is 98% full - this makes me thinks it involves both accounts.

I'll explain as easily as I can - say my Gmail is google.user @ Gmail . Com
Hers is googleuser @ Gmail. Com

She lives in America in a town that has the same name as a UK town and we both have the same name. The only difference is the . in the email.

I've looked at how to report. It doesn't seem like any scam as it's being going so long. Imagine she is mabelsmithtown and I am mabelsmith.town

I don't know where to start with getting in touch. I tried to email her and it came back to me!

Sorry, boring for a Saturday night but surely there is something amiss and wrong here.
I first noticed when getting Facebook notifications thinking, I don't know that person. But I can't find her on Facebook either.
It's highly unlikely that I've 98% filled my Gmail.

Just looking for thoughts or how someone can help me get in touch with someone?

No - nowhere.

Well, I'm intrigued, because unlike literally every other situation described in this thread, that shouldn't be possible! But I won't ask you to post screenshots of your actual emails!

Lellochip · 07/08/2023 20:19

The dot is misleading, this is no more than someone thinking your email is theirs. The dot does however make it harder for them to notice they're using the wrong address.

If my email is [email protected], and someone tried to register an eBay account with that email address, it would say account already exists, they'd hopefully cotton on and realise. If they used [email protected], that is still tied to MY address and will come to me, however eBay will think it's a different address and allow a new account. Idiot can then login with that address and may never notice they never actually receive anything to their own email, whereas I'm suddenly getting informed of idiot's purchases.

This and the + are very handy though for signing up for free trials etc 😉 lellochip, lello.chip, lellochip+1 etc have all enjoyed various free streaming subscriptions, or first time buyer discounts etc

If you email her does it come to you?

She can't email her, because she doesn't know the other person's correct email address.

Oh bless. Read the thread.

I can't tell if people are being deliberately obtuse or if they really believe that "email isn't secure" and lots of people's messages get sent to the wrong addresses.

If this is a windup, kudos to the OP. 👵

God no, it's not a wind up. It's summer hols , here with 14 year old and the first day of sunshine we went to visit Nanny's grave - true story, all true 🤣 Living it up.

It was a lovely day ❤️

She can't email her, because she doesn't know the other person's correct email address.

I think I mentioned that I did email her, to her address, said hi M...

Just came straight back to me.

There's nothing

You do not know her email address. You are not recieving emails sent to her email address.

You are recieving emails sent to what SOME people THINK is her email address - those people are wrong.

May as well just bang my head against my desk!

You emailed yourself. You don't know the correct email address for her.

Absolutely convinced you're on the windup now! Grin

Oh Jesus Christ! It came straight back to you because it's your email address! As has been explained to you countless times YOU DO NOT KNOW HER ACTUAL EMAIL ADDRESS!

buckingmad · 07/08/2023 21:44

😂 this is amazing

Ohmylordnotagain · 07/08/2023 21:47

@buckingmad the op must be on a wind up surely 😂 but wonderful nonetheless.

TitoMojito · 07/08/2023 21:58

OP, you have to be kidding us. If not, please look at WiddlinDiddlin's post as they've explained it perfectly.

You do not know this lady's email address. When you tried to email her, you emailed yourself. I need you to understand this because I am losing my mind.

I can't believe this is still going. I might celebrate with a chocolate biscuit when the penny finally drops. I might be waiting a very long time... 😅

OP if you are indeed a qualified programmer, why not do what a programmer who is debugging would do and try to email myself.me@gmail and myselfme@gmail from a friends account and see what happens? I'm a programmer and it's the first thing I'd try after your first email from yourself, came back to you.

The first thing with a bug is to replicate it. You must know that.

Yes, I have done this - it came straight to me. I've used broadband. Data and a VPN putting me in US.

I am loving this thread. And also thank you @Lellochip for your explanation on how people seemingly think they have an address, eg signing up to eBay with the “dot” version they think they own (missing out a vital number!) and eBay or whoever doesn’t tell them, nope, already registered.

When I first got my gmail I set it up as first name.lastname111@ … I had just changed my surname from a very unusual, in fact unique to our family, name which meant previously I could sign up to any email provider I liked and I would always get first name.surname@. So I routinely forgot the number when typing my new name gmail and must consequently have thoroughly pissed off the original first name.surname email owner until I got used to the new format.

Then I decided that saying the “dot” was annoying and unnecessary and dropped it. This was years ago and sometimes I still go through massive sweary rants at random websites where I’m trying to sign in and why won’t it accept my password which I definitely know and have just reset etc etc only to realise I must have registered on that website with the “dot” email and it doesn’t know that this is the same thing as the non-dot one. Argh it’s no wonder people get so confused!!

I've never amused anybody ever ...

Apart from my local shopkeeper, and he's easily amused. Possibly trained to laugh.

I'm pretty much fucked right now and there is no way I can respond to everything.

Yours

Fucked.

In a drunk way.

I should go to bed, but I need a poo. Issues.

Happy laughing.

My feet hurt too.

Nevermind eh? I have no idea what led to such hilarity. But yeah 🤣🤣

Because the email address associated with them has been incorrectly written so as to read your email address.

As has been explained once or twice!
