I'm not entirely sure where to head here.

It has been going on for years. I receive her FB notifications, the odd email addressed to her. Now my storage is 98% full - this makes me thinks it involves both accounts.

I'll explain as easily as I can - say my Gmail is google.user @ Gmail . Com
Hers is googleuser @ Gmail. Com

She lives in America in a town that has the same name as a UK town and we both have the same name. The only difference is the . in the email.

I've looked at how to report. It doesn't seem like any scam as it's being going so long. Imagine she is mabelsmithtown and I am mabelsmith.town

I don't know where to start with getting in touch. I tried to email her and it came back to me!

Sorry, boring for a Saturday night but surely there is something amiss and wrong here.
I first noticed when getting Facebook notifications thinking, I don't know that person. But I can't find her on Facebook either.
It's highly unlikely that I've 98% filled my Gmail.

Just looking for thoughts or how someone can help me get in touch with someone?

I did, but until just now I would've sworn blind that Kriss Akabusi had "awooga" as a catchphrase!

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 07/08/2023 23:02

8 pages.

So why am I getting people you might know on Facebook?

Updates on Facebook?

Do you know what, don't answer 🤣

It's only 8 pages if you have your MN settings set up that way as 25 posts to a page or whatever it is.

Only 2 pages for me! That's because 150 posts have been randomly sent to another thread because they've got full stops in them.

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 07/08/2023 23:05

Ooh I could crush a grape!

You could try posting this in the GMail Community or the Google Account Community.

Doesn't sound like a security issue - but check if her photos are going into Google photo or if her documents are in Drive.- if not then it really will be her repeatedly giving out the wrong email not b somehow sharing your account and the only thing you can really do is delete all of her messages.

That's what I'm worried about as I have pictures and videos of a mediocre author wanking on them 🤣

True story 😐🤣

I have this on a different provider with an _ and a .

she is also American.

so [email protected]
[email protected]

i know shitloads about her - college applications, then wedding, volunteering at the church, infertility treatment, then a baby.

I used to forward it. now I just delete it all. If she can’t be bothered to remember her own email address I’m not helping!

HyggeTygge · 07/08/2023 23:14

Well this took a turn!

EmeraldDuck · 07/08/2023 23:22

Oo this is interesting! I get a lot of emails intended for an American nurse (her lawyer correspondence, her medical stuff, her job interview date 🙈) and I couldn’t work out why she was so dumb as to give out my email address. Perhaps this is the issue as it is gmail.

So did he 🤣

That's actually what I'm kind of, not really worried about.

I only my shitty little Alcatel phone - nowhere to download to, otherwise I'd just fuck off to another address. Like Carol's next door. She's 74, 3 bedrooms. Alright Carol? Moving in!

Err. No, no too much. She's a miserable old biddy.

Erm.. I think excitement for one night but if anybody to check out author D... I can't I can't.

Such a lovely man. Stuck paintbrushes up his bum. 64. Married.

What was the question?

Oh yeah. When am I fucking off?
Now! It would seem.

Thank you all for solving my problems 🤣

If they get away with it they will keep doing it. The only way to make it stop is to inconvenience them. Cancel their appointments and orders. Change the password on accounts so they can’t get into them. I finally solved it when I cancelled her pizza and she got no dinner!

HyggeTygge · 07/08/2023 23:59

And on that note... night OP!

I love this thread. I love the poster who, as a last resort, cancelled the table for 10 in New York. I particularly love the posters who've explained things so that even a techno-illiterate like me has grasped the concept.

And now I'm thinking of getting a gmail account ...

OP, you sound happy-drunk. Hope you have a good night's sleep.

nonumbersinthisname · 08/08/2023 00:13

A lot of people don't have high computer literacy and don't realise how email addresses work. I've had people phone up to have a go at me for not including the dot they'd put in their email address, where I've tried and failed to explain to them that email systems don't recognise dots before the @, it makes literally zero different if you include them or not, and clearly they were receiving emails I'd sent without the dot just fine, but they were insistent that me not putting the dot in would lead to some random person who'd registered the exact same username without the dot receiving their mail. People just aren't educated about it

@SkylarSpirit This is not true for all email systems, and I can assure you that [email protected] and [email protected] are different users. My version uses full stops, another person with my name uses the one without full stops. I know a lot about her life because a lot of people put in the full stop, including her son!

SabrinaThwaite · 08/08/2023 01:03

I kept getting random gmails for an American family because they kept mistyping their own gmail address - generally political party flyers and Bed Bath and Beyond type sign ups. A bit of sleuthing and they were easy to find (and see their actual gmail address). It stopped when their hospital started emailing me - I replied saying that they had the given the hospital the wrong email and the hospital should make sure it was updated. Not a sausage since.

I used to work for a company with 45,000 employees. One of my colleagues was trying to send a light hearted email to Ian in the labs but emailed Iain instead. Turns out Iain was a rather lovely single guy who responded in kind. Reader, she married him.

Well I'm fair to middling 🤣

Luckily my son has his own flat, and daughter is her Dad's. I do want to reply seriously to those who have replied seriously.

I am reading, however the power of thought currently alludes me.

Cats have food. I have water. If I open my eyes it will be to continue some shit free kindle read that will power me back to sleep faster than chloroform.

Don't wait on a reply is what I'm trying to say 🤣

Sleep doesn't allude me, that makes no sense.

It's the other word. That one.

She has assigned an email address for FB notifications to a new email address, since setting up her FB account (that has to be true, you need to verify the email address by going into the account and clicking something in an email which as its not her account, it's yours, she can't do). I have done this too, so that all the notifications go to a 'junk' account. I would never know if stuff wasn't arriving, I never look there.

She has mistyped that email address missing off whatever initial or numeral that differentiates it from yours.

So you're getting those emails.

You will receive:

Sign ups to things that do not require her to log in and verify from her email account. You may sometimes get sign ups that do require her to log in, which she can't do, and she will just be baffled and probably shouting at her computer when the promised email never arrives.
Stuff she's written her email address down for by hand, and its been misread.
Stuff she's verbally given her email address to - ditto.
Stuff she's typed her email address and either mistyped or its been manually entered and someone else mistyped it.

Does it make sense now? The fault lies with her, not with Gmail. She or people she is dealing with, are accidentally sending to your email.

You do not have the same email address, she cannot access your email account, read your mails, do anything, but she, like anyone, can mistype or scribble or mumble... and hey presto, you get emails meant for her.

BendingSpoons · 08/08/2023 07:02

This thread has taught me lots about Gmail and made me very glad for my unusual surname. I don't actually give out my Gmail address, it's just as a log in for android. But I have both forenamesurname and fsurname accounts (wanted a separate one for my work phone). I'm imaging how tricky it must be to get an account if you have a more common name.

Reugny · 08/08/2023 08:12

Marezydotes · 07/08/2023 15:31

Also, should add I understand about the dot being meaningless in Gmail. I always click on the message details and can see that the sender is sending emails to 'my' email address and is not using the dot (which henceforth should be known as the Mumsnet Dot, a bit like the Oxford Comma)

What I don't understand is why, if my email is [email protected] I also get emails that have been sent (according to message details) to [email protected] and [email protected]?

Also, I'm pretty sure that Google actually required you to use the bloody DOT when it first launched. A lot of my early adopter friends also have the dot, (we were all graduating at the time Gmail launched and needed more professional emails that didn't reflect our MSN user handles 🤣) and looking through my contacts all of us still have the same format usernames. With the dot.

I don't have the dot in any of my Gmail addresses. For my two oldest I just have my first name for one, and initial last name for the other.

I was on the sign up waiting list to get my first name, and then remembered to get initial last name before members of my extended family signed up. 😂
