Office downstairs making me really uncomfortable

I moved into a new office two months ago. There are only three offices in the building and one company has two rooms downstairs whilst I have the office upstairs, and then there is a small office a corridor down from me. It’s within my budget compared to anything else I have seen and just really lovely. However, I introduced myself to the downstairs office just to say hi and to ask them for the toilet codes. The guy seemed nice. But there is another man who refuses to acknowledge any of me or the women who work in my office.

On Monday, I was waiting to be picked up outside with two of my colleagues. We weren’t talking loudly and were just standing. As the man approached one colleague said hello, he swerved her ignoring her, and went inside.

Today again I was outside about to leave standing on the corner outside of the building, he swang round the corner and nearly hit me, and as approaching didn’t slow until the last minute when I quickly stood out of the way.

I didn’t know what to do so just said ‘that was close’, he looked straight at me, and walked past.

I’m trying to keep myself to myself but it’s only a small building so it’s impossible not to see him at least once a day - ie: when leaving at the end of the day or nipping out to grab lunch.

They've just left as I stay until six, and I heard him locking the entrance despite knowing I am still here (luckily I have my own set of keys).

It’s just feeling very hostile and I don’t know what to do or what he’s thinking of us. We are quiet and respectful, polite and we do not bother them. I ensure we continue this way because I love the office!

Any advice?

Maybe he's akward? Maybe he just wants to keep to himself?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 04/08/2023 17:32

I’m not getting it, he is avoiding you so that makes you feel uncomfortable? It sounds sensible to lock the outside door if you’re the only one there.

I thin you are reading way too much into his actions

QuestionableMouse · 04/08/2023 17:33

I'd just ignore him - there's loads of reasons why he could be behaving like that!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 04/08/2023 17:33

Think…not thin.

but since I’m replying again my advice is to just him alone

Officeprobs · 04/08/2023 17:34

I’m not uncomfortable because I’m being avoided, the way he is acting I feel there is something we have done to upset him. Swinging round in his car and not slowing down until I moved out the way, doesn’t feel like I’m reading too much into it

You're assuming this is about you. For all you know he's like this with everyone, he could be rude or have a reason.

Accept he doesn't want to make friends and just leave him alone.

Officeprobs · 04/08/2023 17:36

Ok thank you

I am not doing anything to try to make friends or ‘not leaving him alone’? I can’t help it if we’re in the same place at the same time

OP posts:
saltinesandcoffeecups · 04/08/2023 17:37

He probably didn’t see you… (and you didn’t say it was in his car).

I still think you need to leave him alone. What are you going to do, report him to someone for avoiding you?

Officeprobs · 04/08/2023 17:37

@Giveover80 i never said he was walking - I said he swang round which I thought made it obvious it was a car?

Trust your gut. Speak with colleagues and see if they have had any issues.

AgnesX · 04/08/2023 17:38

It's as if he resents you for being upstairs. Is there an issue with noise eg footfall?

Could you try and get to know any of the women if he's generally bootfaced with everyone or is there a particular problem with you?

Officeprobs · 04/08/2023 17:39

@saltinesandcoffeecups he did see me, he was staring straight at me and I was the only one there

He just sounds unfriendly, but nothing you have said so far sounds worrying.

Totally clear that he was walking and driving at the same time

Officeprobs · 04/08/2023 17:40

@Giveover80 yes, he got out of the car, I said that was close, and he walked straight past into the building. Why are you trying to pick something that happened apart?

OP posts:
Hannahsbananas · 04/08/2023 17:40

He’s allowed to ignore people he has no interest in, op. It’s not very polite, but nobody actually owes you politeness.
I don’t understand the swinging the car round and not slowing down thing? Unless you were actually standing in the road in front of his car there’s no issue?

HeddaGarbled · 04/08/2023 17:40

You’re trying to find reasons why he might be annoyed with you. But maybe that’s how he is with everyone.

AliceOlive · 04/08/2023 17:41

Is her perhaps from a religion or culture where men don’t mix with women outside of their families?

SM4713 · 04/08/2023 17:41

Maybe he is face blind/socially awkward/speech issues/just odd? I had a colleague who struggled to recall people- even after meeting multiple times. If they changed their hair style, blouse colour etc- she had no clue that she'd met them previously.

Do you have customers/clients coming into the building? I'd be more concerned about his attitude towards them and how it might reflect on your own company.

Hannahsbananas · 04/08/2023 17:41

and as approaching didn’t slow until the last minute when I quickly stood out of the way.

Why were you in the bloody way in the first place?
This is ridiculous 😂
