To take all the reduced meat?

ballipp · 03/08/2023 15:37

So last night around 6pm I went to the supermarket and specifically went for the 90% off bargains
I went to the main reduced fridge (after waiting for 15 mins for them to reduce ) and got 2 packs of roast potatoes 33p each ,3 packs of bbq chicken legs for 46p each
pork kebabs for 44p each
Then normally 15 mins later they bring down the reduced meat that day.
There was about 5 people waiting around and I seen the butcher fill his green tub up with the meat and leave it on the counter
So I walk up (everyone was just waiting by the reduced fridge and didn't see what he had done )
I walk up and got 2 steaks 59p each
A beef joint for £1.03p
A pork joint for 43p
Two chickens 38p each and 4 packs of burgers 26p each.
Would you have done the same ?
Or left some for someone else
My freezer is now full for the month and that came to well under £6/£7

@AutumnCrow who wants a internet argument?
It was a post asking if others might do the same
A simple yes or no would of been fine

You do apparently.

The thing is, MN as gone all 'think about the poor people' now, it's hard to really have a discussion on anything without it being brought up, constantly.

To be fair, it's a relevant point in this discussion.

You have no idea if the people waiting were poor

Anyotherdude · 03/08/2023 17:55

If you really needed the savings, and only do it once a month, I don’t see the problem. What was the problem was when I inadvertently went to Costco to purchase some meat and fish on a Saturday, only to find myself unable to get anywhere near the fridges, because unknown to me, they were an hour off reducing all the meat, and the people waiting for that weren’t prepared to let me near to buy any at full price!
I had to reach out to management to get it for me, but it was a pretty intimidating experience…

When she clears a shelf with a queue behind her it is shitty. Where is the solidarity with a fellow human? Where is that bloody wartime spirit you hear so much about? It doesn't matter that it's once a month, the point is she's taking everything with a queue behind her who possibly need the cheap food.

Ah! That wartime spirit people fondly talk about.

My mum grew up then. She said black marketeers never had it so good. Or people who killed pet cats and passed them off as rabbit on the cheap - always buy rabbit with the head on, was her advice because though they look alike skinned, there is no disguising their very different teeth.

The lady next door to her was raped coming home from a night-shift at a munitions factory in the blackout. Her husband was away fighting. My mum only knew because she hammered on the door for help because the rapist had stolen her handbag. And coat, too. Otherwise, being raped was such a terrible shame for the victim, she'd have never have told anyone and pretended the state of her face was from walking into a door several times.

Whatever you like to believe about the olden days, there was never some golden age where everyone was nice to each other.

Chickenkeev · 03/08/2023 18:00

Nobody knows if they were poor, and nobody knows if the weren't. Stocking up your own freezer at the cost of others on the off chance they're pricks is not good. We need a society that minds each other. Where is the end of all this? Screw the poor? What about the NHS? Isn't that for everyone? Or should it be for a select few? But laughing at (potentially) poor people trying to get half decent food is wrong. OP doesn't seem all that poor.

It's unbelievable that stores are allowing this to happen. We're a nation of bloody hooligans.

JMSA · 03/08/2023 18:04

Why only go once a month? Go weekly and take one or two items Confused

Chickenkeev · 03/08/2023 18:04

YY!

AutumnalPumpkin · 03/08/2023 18:07

If I wanted it all, and it was available to me, yes I'd have bought it all. Because I am not a people pleaser and do not feel the need to leave things for others just because others might think it's morally right to do so.
Supermarkets don't reduce things for the needy. Nor is everybody that buys reduced in need.
First come first served in my book.

Well, given the shocking divergence between changes in income and pricing over the last 18months, it's hardly surprising.

Cherrysoup · 03/08/2023 18:12

So just like the wankers during lockdown who stockpiled pasta and toilet roll?

TheOriginalEmu · 03/08/2023 18:18

TBH, it would never cross my mind to buy ready roasted potatoes, or ready BBQd chicken, no matter how cheap. So you are very welcome to those!

They aren’t ready roasted or ready Bbq’d. 😂 the potatoes are peeled and seasoned and ready to roast. The BBQ is a coating on the chicken wings to cook them. As in BBQ sauce. Have you never been to a supermarket??

Chickenkeev · 03/08/2023 18:18

So who feeds the less well off? Is everyone so selfish that they'll sit on their own pile and watch others struggle/starve? I'm dirt poor but i still give to causes, i know what it's like. It's awful to turn your back, there are children suffering in these situations. And adults who are trying to parent children. Where is the society anymore?

I said exactly the same thing earlier on.

But I can see how the existence of impoverished people is relevant to the debate.

That doesn't make sense. There might not be things that she wants if she sticks to your schedule.

Today I finished work early and went in on the way home. There was a lot of nice stuff - turkey mince; Indian, Chinese and Italian ready meals; smoked haddock; a couple of pork loins with crackling ideal for a Sunday family lunch - this is a bit like the conveyor belt round at the end of the Generation Game without the cuddly toy. But I though perfectly nice, I didn't want any of that stuff, so I left it for someone who did.

Why buy things even just one or two, if you don't want them just because they are cheap and available? Similarly, why not buy things, and in large quantities, if you do want them and they are cheap and available?

fuzzyduck1 · 03/08/2023 18:25

I only take what I need for a couple of days. We are all looking for a bargain but share the love.
if people had done that in 2020 we wouldn’t have ended up with the great loo roll famine

A couple of days is very different to a couple of weeks like OP though.

Let’s hope you’re not back of the queue behind a “people pleaser” next time you’re in a queue for something, eh?

AutumnalPumpkin · 03/08/2023 18:42

@Barrell but they are queuing for something that they may not necessarily get. Supermarket reduced section is purely hit & miss. Just because you queue doesn't mean you are going to get what you want. I've been both parties. I've seen people in front of me take what I was waiting for. Nothing I can do, they just got there before me.

Or they're grabbing what they can get. None of us know so we can't speculate. But stockpilingwith a queue behind you is not great

With respect, why does that give her the right to clean out the place? Other people may have had travel costs. OP seems to be sympathy deficient for people who are in the same situation as she is. That doesn't sit well with me.

Just answering the question as to why she isn't going more frequently.
