To take all the reduced meat?

ballipp · 03/08/2023 15:37

So last night around 6pm I went to the supermarket and specifically went for the 90% off bargains
I went to the main reduced fridge (after waiting for 15 mins for them to reduce ) and got 2 packs of roast potatoes 33p each ,3 packs of bbq chicken legs for 46p each
pork kebabs for 44p each
Then normally 15 mins later they bring down the reduced meat that day.
There was about 5 people waiting around and I seen the butcher fill his green tub up with the meat and leave it on the counter
So I walk up (everyone was just waiting by the reduced fridge and didn't see what he had done )
I walk up and got 2 steaks 59p each
A beef joint for £1.03p
A pork joint for 43p
Two chickens 38p each and 4 packs of burgers 26p each.
Would you have done the same ?
Or left some for someone else
My freezer is now full for the month and that came to well under £6/£7

Just answering the question as to why she isn't going more frequently.

I get you but i assume she didn't question her fellow shoppers on their patterns. Most people have reasons for what they do, many of which are perfectly valid, but OP won't know, and as such, can't judge. Anyway, shopping when produce is scarce is a dogfight. That's not uncommon.

gelatogina · 03/08/2023 19:10

I’d have taken the lot OP. You know every single person waiting would have done the same.

Hannahsbananas · 03/08/2023 19:13

So many repugnant attitudes on this thread.

In what way out of curiousity?

Ah! That wartime spirit people fondly talk about.

My mum grew up then. She said black marketeers never had it so good. Or people who killed pet cats and passed them off as rabbit on the cheap - always buy rabbit with the head on, was her advice because though they look alike skinned, there is no disguising their very different teeth.

The lady next door to her was raped coming home from a night-shift at a munitions factory in the blackout. Her husband was away fighting. My mum only knew because she hammered on the door for help because the rapist had stolen her handbag. And coat, too. Otherwise, being raped was such a terrible shame for the victim, she'd have never have told anyone and pretended the state of her face was from walking into a door several times.

Whatever you like to believe about the olden days, there was never some golden age where everyone was nice to each other.

Am not British so i go along with what i see/read. The current attitude seems very different to that tho tbh.

ChristmasCwtch · 03/08/2023 19:26

That seems greedy. You saw other people waiting for reduced food. Some of whom may not have got anything else.

Also, I wouldn’t be freezing meat on the day it expires. Plenty of times I’ve opened chicken a day or two before the expiry and it’s smelled bad (Tesco). Same with mince not quite looking right.

gamerchick · 03/08/2023 20:07

Oh good grief so much busom hoiking 🙄 the people whinging are mostly those who don't watch the time to go for the yellow stickers. I don't need too so I leave it for those who do and I count my blessings.

OP grabbed a bargain. Pressure off for food. There are some who go every single day with elbows at the ready. Once a month isnt something to whinge about.

It's a SHIT situation that anybody has to do that.

Or they're grabbing what they can get. None of us know so we can't speculate. But stockpilingwith a queue behind you is not great

I don't grab. I pick up things or turn them over to find over things beneath them. There are things I don't want but other people do and vice versa.

Scrums and fights happen but I've never witnessed it at the reduced section in my local supermarket and I doubt they do on a regular basis. IME people are usually civilised and sometimes say: "Would you like this Hunter's Chicken ready meal? They're quite nice."

But selling real footage of that to MailOnline is as good a way of turning a penny in these times of economic breakdown. Just like selling footage of people racing to the sun beds by the pool in Benalmadena. I make no judgement. It happens.

Sometimes I've been beaten to the shoulder of lamb or chicken rogan josh ready meal but that has always been because someone was in front of me in the queue.

It all comes out in the wash, IME.

So you won't be in the queue for reduced food because of your concerns about hygiene. That's good then. It won't trouble you and more room for others.

But this was grabbing everything. To stockpile for a month. I can't agree with that tbh. My own feelings albeit but i don't agree with it.

ballipp · 03/08/2023 20:21

@Chickenkeev who grabbed everything?
I took the things we like
I didn't take lamb/fish /soups/sandwiches etc etc cos we didn't want them
I took the things we would use in august

You don't have to be British to have experienced the Second World War. The clue is the name world war. There was also a first one.

I don't know where in the world you come from but imagine one or both might have touched your community to some extent and others stretching back in time.

Some people are nice and some people not so much. But as rough as it gets in the scrum at the reduced aisle in Asda, the security guards would step in at actual rape and pillaging.

JudgeRudy · 03/08/2023 20:27

I'd have taken what I wanted. I wouldn't have snatched/pushed/fought for it, but yes, if no-one had noticed I would have thought it was fair game to take plenty.
It is a bit selfish yes, in the same way that it's selfish to put my kids' names down early for the best schools, to go on holiday when I know someone somewhere someone is homeless, to maybe pay to get my hair coloured when someone can't access a dentist, the way I don't take my 3 neighbours shopping with me because they dont have a car, or l don't look in on that mentally ill chap down the road...we are all selfish in different ways. I believe I'm less selfish than most and getting some bargin food items would sit OK with me.

Ireland. And it doesn't seem that we had it quite as bad. But way before my time tbf. But my point was, nicking all the food is not great. You never know what someone needs behind you, esp for the deals. It's probably the case that the person isn't thinking that way etc but taking everything isn't good. There are seriously deprived people around atm so stockpiling isn't good.

There is also no need to be patronising about the world wars. There were plenty of Irish men fought and died in them. While we were still occupied. So no. Don't go there.

She was grabbing all the bargains though. It's not bosom hoiking, it's fellow poor people who for whatever reason might not be able to sweep the shelf. I think it's greedy. But she asked so there's my answer. Others will disagree. We're all entitled to our opinion.

I know. My dad and my uncle did it so I will go there if you don't mind. But what on earth does it have to do with nabbing a cheap chicken in Tesco?

The war refs. My point was that you were rude about the WWs. It was seperate from the chickens. But tbh i find food very expensive now, it's not acceptable. This post reads very well...

VictoriaVenkman · 03/08/2023 22:24

Greedy and selfish OP

Chickenkeev · 03/08/2023 22:33

It would have been looked upon very badly to steal food in the war. You'd like to think in a hard station you'd help each other out.

KarmaStar · 04/08/2023 00:06

You are greedy .you have a nice full freezer whilst some kids and parents are going to bed with empty tummys..what a lovely person you are.not.

Used to work at Tesco. Let me assure you, OP is unusual in that she actually needed the reduced produce. There used to be a scrum every night we didnt bring it out until security were there, sometimes up to 30/40 people, very few of them were 'poor'. I once caught my mother in the middle of them. She is minted. It's a hobby for most, believe me.

ballipp · 04/08/2023 06:23

@KarmaStar get a grip!
Children with empty tummy's because I took meat for my family ...
Oliver Twist wasn't stood there ,it was people who had trolleys anyway with food in
So hardly on the poverty line
