To not boil another egg?

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 08:59

DC2 is 7 and going through both a growth spurt and a very fussy stage.

DC was offered poached or scrambled egg for breakfast. ( which I can reliably make) but I was persuaded to do boiled instead. Then I made it a bit runny… and had the audacity to serve with soldiers made of GRANARY bread! ‘It has bits in it’

DC refused to eat it and wanted something else. I asked DC to eat what I had made… they have left breakfast with nothing and are being extremely grumpy.

I have declined to make another egg… AIBU to think when they are properly hungry they will eat what is on offer…

photo attached of the offending plate…(DC insisted that I take the boiled egg out of the shell - but now doesn’t want it!

Are you the poster who boils steak?

It was a boiled egg before DC insisted I take it out of the shell!

There's no way that started off as a boiled egg 😁 you can see it's been fried.

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 09:27

Funny thing is I am actually a good cook. Just fucking boiled eggs!

So do you know think that you should do your young child something edible to eat? Why the unnecessary harshness?

EggOverEasy · 03/08/2023 09:27

Sorry OP, but that egg should go to the dog/bin.

There are lots of gadgets to make boiling eggs easier. You need to trust the process and boil the egg as long as it needs to be boiled for the particular consistency you want. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-boil-egg-perfectly

I second other posters it'll be a good project for you and your children to do together.

Bloody hell @iamboudicca bet you weren't expecting your attempt at a boiled egg to be ripped apart on MN Grin

I have an 8 year old. I made an amazing omelette for him at his request...it was refused on the grounds of being too eggy. Stick to your strengths is the lesson I took from it and now he only gets scrambled egg Grin

Like I said above you can buy a timer for like £2 and ta-da no more errors. Your child is 7 she can help you make the egg turn it into a learning experience and make it the start of her being a good cook too.

CloudyMcCloud · 03/08/2023 09:29

As pp said it has air bubbles which means it was cooked by microwave, not boiled

Microwaved egg is not good

I’m not quite sure how it went so wrong either. I large egg, water at just below boiling point. Then simmered for 4 and a half minutes. Not sure why it turned out so undercooked. Was trying to not make it hard boiled.

I like doing poached as I can see when they are ready.

Actually a perfectly soft boiled 'dippy' egg is quite hard to do consistently.
size of egg, freshness of egg, time out of fridge prior to boiling, size of pan, water temp, exact timing all make a difference. I have a lot of experience as I have a child with Autism who would only eat PERFECT dippy eggs & soldiers for lunch for years. Delia Smith has good advice on eggs including 'basic boiling'.
I don't think your photo looks appetising sorry but tbf you offered other kinds.

VioletOrange · 03/08/2023 09:32

I’m with your DS a bit with this OP.

I’m really fussy about eggs though. If the boiled egg was that snotty and undercooked I wouldn’t want it either, even after being given another minute in the microwave.

Annaishere · 03/08/2023 09:32

I would eat that egg for the record

TipsyAndTommy · 03/08/2023 09:33

The thing is you know your egg is shit, you've pretty much said as much. So just make another egg!
I wouldn't eat something that I thought was rubbish, so I don't really see why people try to force children to eat things that aren't the best. Especially if they are already fussy. That's really not going to help!!

LardoBurrows · 03/08/2023 09:33

Give the ungrateful little shit porridge or toast from now on, no choices offered, porridge or toast or he goes without. Don't pander to him Op, once you do, you will be doing it for the next 18 years, make a stand for mothers's emancipation now.

Bring your pan of water to the boil (properly boiling), place your egg (better if it's room temperature rather than directly out of the fridge). Place your egg in the water using a spoon. Set timer around 5 mins for runny, 7 mins for soft boiled and 9 for hard boiled.
When done, you can run cold water into the pan so that the shell doesn't stick to the egg when you peel.
This is a really fool proof method. Don't give up on making boiled eggs!

MavisChunch29 · 03/08/2023 09:34

Poached eggs are another level, I wasted so many eggs trying to do them the cheffy/swirly water way, even when we had chickens and so many fresh eggs.

The only way I can do them is in an inch or two of gently bubbling water in a deep frying pan, crack them very carefully and as close to the water as possible, and they take exactly the same time as the toast in the toaster. If I haven't put enough water in I spoon it over the yolk to make sure it cooks.

But my favourite is sort of a fried/coddled egg where I cook mushrooms/tomatoes in a frying pan first with a bit of spray oil, crack the egg in, get it started then put the lid on and turn the heat off. Somewhere in between fried and poached and not greasy.

Westfacing · 03/08/2023 09:22

Untoasted soldiers are too floppy - not fit for purpose!

@Westfacing some people prefer less regimented soldiers. Lots of family/friends (are odd) prefer bread to soldiers.

this is what the child requested!

@iamboudicca id have made them another egg. I would not have served them that and surely you know your child doesn't like bread with 'bits in it'. It's not a battle worth having!

make them some breakfast!!

4.5 mins isn’t long enough for a large egg. That’s why it was undercooked.

Yes I did try to sort the disaster by putting it in the microwave

In what way would a microwave sort out a bad boiled egg or underdone toast?

piscesangel · 03/08/2023 09:35

I can completely understand how kids drive us mad with their fussy eating - but this time you're asking your child to eat an uncooked egg or go hungry, it's not really reasonable. Sorry op!

CloudyMcCloud · 03/08/2023 09:36

Can you make some breakfast for them?

Given the feedback on the egg

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 03/08/2023 09:37

It's not a boiled egg though is it? we can all see that so I don't know why your carrying on the charade.

Or she could just not try to make a child eat an almost raw egg??
