Would 100% prefer a heatwave over this bullshit weather!

I've been thinking this for the past week but kept reminding myself of exactly how stuffy some days were last year.

However, with it being wet, windy, and only 14° at it's very hottest today I can comfortably say I'd suffer a few 30+ days just to get the nice ones in the 20s.

Left the bathroom window open a crack after showering earlier and have had to get up and close it as was getting really chilly. I'm now in bed with thick socks on and a heavy duvet. Summer my arse! Bring on the global warming IMO. 😂

I'm out and about in it every day so I get it. The rain is too much. But I can use an umbrella.. it's more comfortable than feeling too hot in my own skin 24/7.
I'd much rather sunny and 20c! But if I had to choose between heatwave and this.

I can use an umbrella. 🙄

That doesn't solve the mud, the wet dog, the fact that I can't hold an umbrella and a dog and pick up poo. An umbrella doesn't dry the laundry and it doesn't solve the dull grey lack of sunshine causing my mood to plummet.

QueefQueen80s · 03/08/2023 13:53

@SoupDragon No need for eyerolls, I'm talking about my experience and preference. I have to do all that too and yes it's shit, I hate my kitchen floor being a mud bath from the dog. But it's still preferable to feeling uncomfortable in my skin at 30c+
You feel differently, that's okay

Cold weather causes a lot more deaths and health problems in this country than warm weather does.

Yep all the won't you think about the elderly and vunerable and yet we are hear saying bring on the heat.

This cold damp weather has aided in the deaths of several people I know this year (including 2 family members) and many of us have been badly ill or suffered mobility issues but I have never actually known in real life anyone to drop dead of heatstroke or dehydration from a British heatwave of 30 degrees.

US here....°104 has been our temp recently and predicted for the next several..
But it's called "summer" and we endure it every single year.
But AC is a beautiful thing and it's always appreciated 🥶

Unfortunately AC ultimately makes it worse by contributing to green House emissions...

Helendee · 03/08/2023 14:33

I am really enjoying this very traditional British Summer, you can keep your stinky heatwaves. 😉

WaltzingWaters · 03/08/2023 14:35

Yes please!!! I need me some sunshine and heat. 30 degrees sounds perfect. May and June were glorious. Since then it’s just been depressing.

Heat can kill.

Anyone whose life is in a precarious state can be killed by varying environmental conditions.

It's just that cold tends to kill a lot more - in this country at least. A lot of that is indirect, for example with cold weather a lot of viruses survive and spread better.

That's why in the winter hospitals are packed out with people with flu, pneumonia covid etc.

My guess is that a 2C rise in UK average temperatures would have a positive impact on life expectancy.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 03/08/2023 15:04

I hate having to cycle in the rain, but I know my situation is irrelevant to most people who drive. I also happen to love the sunshine 😥 and look forward to it all year.

WimbledonHasselhoff · 03/08/2023 15:05

WeaselCheeks · 03/08/2023 09:10

I find the current weather genuinely depressing - my mental health is at an all-time low. I kind of survive winter by gritting my teeth and accepting it'll be awful, but at least there's Christmas to cheer us up.

But I live for summer - ideally 18-25 degrees, blue skies and only occasional rain. This relentless grey wetness is killing me. Going out riding or walking is miserable. I've come to the conclusion that I'm solar powered.

Absolutely agree with this.
I had a really rough start to the year and honestly when the days started getting longer I held onto that in a visceral way, that warmth and light were coming and to hold on.
The sun in May/June was a godsend, the only thing that kept me going when things were so tough. Just whatever else was going on, at least I could have the simple joy of sitting in the garden and feeling the warmth on my skin.
It was actually dry for so long that I wanted a good storm to water everything, but now weeks of almost endless rain has destroyed what was left of my mental health.
Sunshine is such a simple pleasure, I can only assume those who love the miserable weather have plenty of good things in their life and don't need it.

There's no reason to be Vitamin D deficient. There's more than enough sunlight to avoid that.

To produce enough vitamin D, you need something like half an hour of sun on your face and forearms during the middle of the day. Per day.

I suppose you could increase it by having more skin uncovered, but even if I'd laid down naked in the garden for the past six weeks there simply hasn't been enough sun.

Wahwahwahwahwah · 03/08/2023 17:54

Honestly I don't understand all the PP saying the horrible rainy, cloudy, chilly weather is good! I mean sure, I don't want 40 degrees and fires but honestly that really isn't something that we've seen in the UK ever except last year as far as I'm aware. A heatwave would be 5 days at 26 degrees or so probably and frankly that would be bloody lovely.
We have the whole of autumn / winter and most of spring for all those who like it cold and wet and muddy.
It isn't good for crops to have rain constantly, cold weather kills more than hot in this country and honestly, who wants to love in perpetual grey muddy gloom?

AlfietheSchnauzer · 03/08/2023 19:22

We've had a beautiful day here in North Yorkshire! 20° and blue skies

jeaux90 · 03/08/2023 07:00

@DreamTheMoors my sister lives in Phoenix (we are British) it's always absolutely baking there this time of year but has been very hot recently.

Honestly though, I'd take it, weather is shit here at the moment.

I just got back from Florida, eating and drinking outside it was bliss.

@jeaux90

That’s wonderful - I’m so happy you enjoyed your trip.

We live in the San Joaquin Valley of California. During the summer it’s always 100F+ & we’re used to it - but that doesn’t mean we enjoy it or tolerate it. It’s awful!

I don’t envy your sister - we just stay indoors and wait for the days of cooler weather. November will come eventually…

@AlfietheSchnauzer

I live in California - I’m American.
I spent an hour yesterday online looking at homes for sale in North Yorkshire.
It’s so beautiful there.
You must love living there with the beautiful landscape and weather.

Rugbyballhead · 03/08/2023 20:27

We had a mostly wet 'summer' holiday in the south of England and a wet day at a theme park. I don't even mind if the temp doesn't get above 16, I'm just sick of the rain! It's rubbish doing outdoor things with children in the rain.

user9630721458 · 03/08/2023 20:49

@Thebestwaytoscareatory That's interesting. I'd always assumed the UK would get hotter. Are you saying it will get colder and wetter due to the jet stream? Or will it vary year to year, perhaps, since it was very hot last year. At least in the SW it was unseasonably hot in May/June, as if we had bypassed Spring.

Threenow · 03/08/2023 21:41

SoupDragon · 03/08/2023 13:10

What on earth is "lovely" or "comfortable" about being rained on every day? It's utterly, utterly shit. It's bad enough having to deal with this weather for the other 9 months of the year, having it in summer too is making me feel extremely low. This summer hasn't been anywhere near nice enough to get me through the misery of autumn/winter/spring.

I agree with you on this. I'm sitting here in amazement at the posters saying how they prefer the rainy weather to a bit of heat. Where I live (not the UK) our summers are hot and dry, and our winters frosty, and we don't get anything like the amount of rain many of you get at any time of the year. I would go stark raving mad if I had to put up with your dampness - in fact I would be moving as I really couldn't stand it. I moan about a very hot day as much as anyone, but would far, far, rather have heat than constant rain.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 03/08/2023 21:49

Wishing for warmer weather isn't the same as voting for it, so the anger I'm seeing here is incredibly misplaced. Perhaps seeing the upside to global warming is a coping mechanism, who knows.

madeinmanc · 03/08/2023 21:49

Today has made me realise it really is the rain that's the problem for me. It's been cool (about 18 or so) but clear with just one downpour and dry now. I've been bobbing in and out of the garden all day and chatted with neighbours etc. between work, it's actually the rain that stops that.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 03/08/2023 21:52

Totally agree with you OP

chocspot · 03/08/2023 21:55

I don't mind that it's not hot (although I do feel loads happier when the sun is shining, and love being able to sit and read in the garden) but I can't stand the rain! It makes me miserable. I feel like the summer holidays are being wasted because the rain limits what we can do.

I wouldn't want it so hot that I can't sleep!

chocspot · 03/08/2023 21:57

Everyone saying June was hottest on record - not in bloody London and SE England it wasn't. It was chilly then and it is still damp and chilly now. Worst summer I can remember

London was hot in June. Hotter than the rest of the UK

When I lived in the Middle East it was perfect season wise, well maybe too hot in summer sometimes but it was a dry heat and lots of air cons and pools etc.
But Spring went on for a while and it was 15-20c sunny and warmish.
Summer dry heat and beautiful warm evenings
Autumn cool and dry
Winter was crisp, frosty, cold with blue skies and sun

Got rain and storms but just now and then.

Annalisatheantelope · 03/08/2023 22:25

London was boiling in June though? Hottest the UK has ever had. As a summer hater, I as I said am glad it isn't boiling hot but the rain is beyond a joke now. Even when the weather forecasters say it is going to improve it doesn't.
Will be interesting to see what September and October will be like.
