Would 100% prefer a heatwave over this bullshit weather!

I've been thinking this for the past week but kept reminding myself of exactly how stuffy some days were last year.

However, with it being wet, windy, and only 14° at it's very hottest today I can comfortably say I'd suffer a few 30+ days just to get the nice ones in the 20s.

Left the bathroom window open a crack after showering earlier and have had to get up and close it as was getting really chilly. I'm now in bed with thick socks on and a heavy duvet. Summer my arse! Bring on the global warming IMO. 😂

Posts like this are really beginning to get to me. You wish global warming would happen so you personally would have a bit better weather! I know it was said (half)in jest but seriously global warming and the climate changes it brings is killing people. And it will only get worse.

The current weather is because of the position of the Gulf Stream, which has shifted probably due to climate change. Global warming means the average global temperature increases not that everywhere gets warmer, climate change can mean wetter, grey summers here and heatwaves elsewhere. More unpredictable and unseasonable weather.

If nothing is done then there will be more heatwaves, wild fires, floods, droughts, snowstorms, hurricanes, rising sea levels, habitat loss, food chain collapse - all of which will lead to famine, mass migration and potentially wars.

But yes, let’s all keep our fingers crossed that we get more global warming as we currently have 2 months (July and August - June was stunning) of slightly bad weather!

(in case it is raised - I can still be “fun at parties”, I just don’t think global warming is funny joke )

TheFairyCaravan · 03/08/2023 10:08

I’m so sick of people parroting that we had a “glorious May and June…” well bully for you, but some of us didn’t. We had a handful of warm days. We went to the pub, for lunch, on 9th June and sat outside. It was very cold. Everyone was in hoodies and jumpers.

CloudyMcCloud · 03/08/2023 10:12

There seems to be a bit of conflicting info on the Gulf Stream

Obviously it’s not that predictable but Met I think or someone did report other day that by a certain year the hot temperatures would be normal in U.K.

Not the case if we are cooler due to Gulf Stream

CloudyMcCloud · 03/08/2023 10:13

Next week looks nice here

(Bet there’s complaining threads still, too hot or whatever)

Boomboom22 · 03/08/2023 10:15

Today where I am is sunny 20 degrees though which is a bit chilly for August. This is the only day without rain, every other day its rained even when weather forecast says low chance. Back to 85% chance of rain tomorrow and the next week.

Polis · 03/08/2023 10:16

I am in Australia and its 21 in winter!

It depends where you are in Australia. It isn’t 21 everywhere.

Kingpin90 · 03/08/2023 10:28

I don’t mind it being about 16c, Or just not fine rain or dull and damp.
I want to dry my clothes outside, not play in and out, then give up and have airers all over house. The tumble dryer is back on.
Crisp autumn not damp and soggy autumn.

It's actually the jet stream not the gulf stream. They are two different things.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 03/08/2023 08:56

Well, I do! It's an anonymous forum, I'll never actually say this to your face, but here we go: I'm wishing for a heat wave!!!

However, before anyone gets too upset I will just add that contrary to popular belief, my wishes have absolutely no bearing on what the weather does next. It often goes the other way, as a matter of fact. So you're safe, it will probably keep raining

@FirstTimeNameChanger

Yes, you do, we all get that.

Given the housing situation, I think your boasting is in really bad taste. But hey, if it makes you feel good 💁🏻‍♀️

you said And while some of you suffer in heatwaves, can we stop saying "we're not set up for heat waves in this country". It's not true!

YOU might be 'set up' for a HeatWaves this country is NOT. YOU are NOT 'this country'

One of the impacts of climate change is the slowing / weakening of the gulf stream. The gulf stream is a primary driver of weather patterns and climate in the UK, and some of the impacts of it slowing for the UK include a much colder overall climate and increased extreme rainfall events / unpredictable rainfall patterns.

I think this is an important point and one I use to counter the climate change activists' argument about "global warming" - if it dicks around with the gulf stream the UK won't be as badly affected. The planet heats up, but the thing that makes our climate unusually warm will lessen in effect. It more-or-less balances out so there's nothing for us to worry about really.

It won't be as badly affected by heat no, but it will be badly impacted by climate change as we're on similar latitudes to the likes of Minsk and Newfoundland.

If we end up with similar climates our entire way of life will need to change including the crops we growth, amount of fuel we need, how we dress, move around, etc, etc.

Also you need to remember that climate change is global and the impacts don't happen in isolation. For example, corn yields are predicted to fall by 24% in the next few decades and rice is particularly susceptible to climate chang, with yeilds already being impacted by it. Do you really think the UK will have nothing to worry about if the availability and volume of two out of three key food staples for humanity are reduced?

FuckeryOmbudsman · 03/08/2023 09:01

In the north - so possibly a few hundred miles from what she calls "sweltering"

So - please have a horrible and dangerous time elsewhere in the country because I'm all right

@FuckeryOmbudsman (love the name!!)

yep, absolutely no thought for the elderly & vulnerable, families packed into inner city flats with no outside space, people who have to work in the heat, etc etc.

Just 'I'm alright Jack'

such selfishness makes me SO angry, & upset that people can care so little for other people.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 03/08/2023 10:50

@VinEtFromage I live in a tiny miners cottage with perpetual damp, in a part of the country no one wants to live in because there are no jobs, public transport, health services etc etc. The only thing I can boast about is for the 8 days a year it gets warm here, I am equipped to survive it. To thrive in it, actually. Please don't take those bragging rights from me, it's all I have 😆

PS - I am not actually taking any of this seriously, and I hope you aren't either! Climate change is real, and deadly. The future doesn't look great for the world as a whole. Still, some heat would be nice right about now...

FirstTimeNameChanger · 03/08/2023 10:50

Oops, maybe you are taking it seriously....

GasPanic · 03/08/2023 10:52

Cold weather causes a lot more deaths and health problems in this country than warm weather does.

Climate change affects us all. Some parts of the world that are experiencing warming could well become uninhabitable meaning migration to those parts if the world that are cooler.

CarrieOnBoris · 03/08/2023 11:34

I would rather have this weather than a heatwave. I hate it when it's really hot.

Thehonestybox · 03/08/2023 11:41

I agree with you OP. it feels after a continuous tian every day summer that all we have to look forward to is the freezing cold months ahead of relentless news stories about libraries used as warm spaces, people living under electric blankets and old people dying because they can't afford heating bills.

I honestly think our government should be providing FREE vitamin d pills for everyone in the UK, because we aren't getting any naturally and it must eventually through cause and effect of symptoms be causing strain on the NHS

QueefQueen80s · 03/08/2023 12:03

I'll take this over a heatwave even if it means no 25c days either.
So nice to be comfortable.. I hate that feeling of prickly skin and like I want to burst out of it constantly.

@FirstTimeNameChanger

yes, I am taking climate change & CoL, housing issues seriously.

i can only go by what people write & those are my thoughts regarding what you wrote.

in the winter when you're cold & damp, feeling miserable & unable to move to a lovely, well insulated, dry, warm house, I'd defend you for 'not being prepared' and I wouldn't say housing in the U.K. 'is set up for cold wet winters'

yes, climate change is worrying - sadly. I guess thats what comes from
living on a planet! It has its own agenda!!

ClemFandango1 · 03/08/2023 13:04

YAB extremely U. This weather is perfect! The heat makes me panic, and considering the awful heat in Europe I'm very relieved. Fingers crossed it continues til autumn.

Annalisatheantelope · 03/08/2023 13:04

I am in the south and it's low twenties. The rain has been annoying but much rather that then the disgusting temperatures we had last year. Made me so unwell.

SoupDragon · 03/08/2023 13:10

What on earth is "lovely" or "comfortable" about being rained on every day? It's utterly, utterly shit. It's bad enough having to deal with this weather for the other 9 months of the year, having it in summer too is making me feel extremely low. This summer hasn't been anywhere near nice enough to get me through the misery of autumn/winter/spring.

I'm out and about in it every day so I get it. The rain is too much. But I can use an umbrella.. it's more comfortable than feeling too hot in my own skin 24/7.
I'd much rather sunny and 20c! But if I had to choose between heatwave and this.

YABU. I’ve just been on ‘holiday’ to a heatwave country and it was hideous, everytime we stepped outside we felt dizzy/sweaty/exhausted from the heat. In 35 degrees plus you just can’t do anything, not got for a walk, not sit outside without getting a headache. You can swim in the sea but you’ll get a headache from the sun. And that’s without wildfires etc.

Drizzle sucks but it is better than a heatwave. As soon as I came back I went for a walk in the rain and it felt so amazing to be walking around outside!

In those temps maybe you can’t do anything and maybe you get a headache even in the sea. It’s not true of everyone. And while I wouldn’t necessarily choose 35+ for any length of time, 25-30 and sunny would be nicer than the current 15-20 and rainy.

Theoldwoman · 03/08/2023 13:35

Gosh it’s warmer here in Australian winter. 19 degrees today.
