Would 100% prefer a heatwave over this bullshit weather!

I've been thinking this for the past week but kept reminding myself of exactly how stuffy some days were last year.

However, with it being wet, windy, and only 14° at it's very hottest today I can comfortably say I'd suffer a few 30+ days just to get the nice ones in the 20s.

Left the bathroom window open a crack after showering earlier and have had to get up and close it as was getting really chilly. I'm now in bed with thick socks on and a heavy duvet. Summer my arse! Bring on the global warming IMO. 😂

Everyone saying June was hottest on record - not in bloody London and SE England it wasn't. It was chilly then and it is still damp and chilly now. Worst summer I can remember

What? It was boiling where I am in NW London, I was in shorts for most of June.

GenieGenealogy · 03/08/2023 09:25

There is a whole extreme of weather between 43c in Arizona, and constant wet and wind.

We have just had the wettest July on record. Places getting 2 or 3 times the month's average rainfall. Weather forecasters describing the weather on 1st August as "autumnal". It is not unreasonable to hope for some settled, sunny weather with temperatures in the 20s for a few days.

Flickersy · 03/08/2023 08:23

What do you mean "no sun this year"? That's complete bollocks.

June was the warmest on record.

How have people forgotten this already?

June certainly was not that warm everywhere in the UK.

East Midlands had a pretty depressing June. Couple of nice days and that was it

Robbiesraft · 03/08/2023 09:30

It's moronic to wish for Climate Change. That's likely to mean more rain, floods and dying trees in the UK. Let alone the displaced people and food supply issues.

It's understandable to be pissed off at the gloomy spell of weather. Have a moan. Book a sunny holiday if you can afford it. Push for the school holidays to be changed. Push for the ridiculous school attendance targets to be changed so you can take your child out of school for a week in June with the agreement of the Head. Move south or west, if you can. Relatively warmer and drier here. Brexit has fucked up dreams of moving to mainland Europe for now.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 03/08/2023 09:31

Bring on the global warming IMO. 😂

Well, you're getting your wish but, global warming doesn't equal everywhere getting hot, dry weather in the summer.

One of the impacts of climate change is the slowing / weakening of the gulf stream. The gulf stream is a primary driver of weather patterns and climate in the UK, and some of the impacts of it slowing for the UK include a much colder overall climate and increased extreme rainfall events / unpredictable rainfall patterns.

It's also a bit tone deaf to wish for something that's going to kill and seriously ruin the lives of millions of people IMO, bit like wishing for global famine because you can't help snacking.

People are literally losing their homes in Europe over heatwaves.

Nah, it wasn't done nearly cleverly enough for it to be funny.

madeinmanc · 03/08/2023 09:43

Depends if you mean a puny British heatwave (barely over 30) or one similar to what's happening in continental Europe right now? If the former, then YADNBU.

madeinmanc · 03/08/2023 09:45

Similarly, the south west had about three weeks of warm (low twenties), but not very hot weather, that's all. You had to be in the east (e.g. Kent, London) to see all those warm, mid-twenties temperatures. But as it was hot there, that's what dominated the news narrative.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/08/2023 09:47

I don’t think you would.

14 in summer, its threads like this that make me happy I am in Australia and its 21 in winter!

I was just about to say the same. Even in the S. Island of NZ we've had warmer weather than that!

lavenderlou · 03/08/2023 09:48

I dislike the rain and cold and prefer warm weather but very hot temperatures would be worse and more damaging. The jet stream does look like it might shift a bit this week so fingers crossed for a bit of an improvement. There's still time for some warmer weather.

Gamerlady · 03/08/2023 09:50

This weather suits me fine and my garden is thriving with all the rain.. last year was horrendously hot and working in it was even worse ..

madeinmanc · 03/08/2023 09:50

BTW everyone, farmers here in the south west can't get their harvests in because of this awful weather, they're looking at losing crops. It's not as simple as "cool weather good, warm weather bad".

mosiacmaker · 03/08/2023 09:52

Such a selfish short sighted view. I am glad the plants and animals are alive, the rivers are flowing and that we aren’t worried about water running out.

People have such short memories, does no one remember how awful last summer was with everything dying? Like a dystopian film I hate it. I’ll put up with a bit of rain.

gingerguineapig · 03/08/2023 09:55

It's really not cold where I am, it's late teens/early 20s and has not been raining all the time.

Anyway from next Wednesday the forecast looks better - sunny and 20/21 degrees - perfect!

GasPanic · 03/08/2023 09:56

Absolutely this.

People think rain is good for the garden. But completely forgetting plants need heat and light too to grow. Saturated ground rots root systems and root vegetables and wet plants are difficult to harvest, as well as the ground being difficult for vehicles to move on.

I have a plum tree in the garden and this year the crop is dismal. That's because July is usually the finishing month, where the plant gets a lot of sunshine. Immediate rainfall is not so important because the root system is deep.

The weather this summer has been appalling, hope August picks up but feels like the summer is a complete write off for both leisure and agriculture. I suspect it has ruined a lot of peoples holidays in the UK.

gingerguineapig · 03/08/2023 09:57

It was hot in June but not that hot - mid to high 20s isn't that extreme at all, it might have got to 30 on one day. But I think the issue for me was that the nights were warm - I found it very difficult to sleep. Much prefer it now!

inloveonholiday · 03/08/2023 09:58

Just flown back from Athens. Absolutely no way would I wish a heatwave on the uk. Elderly, babies, animals and plants just don't cope.

I would wish for some normal uk sunny periods so the crops can dry to be harvested.

We desperately need this rain. I think we needed two solid months of rain to catch up, but not all in one stretch would be welcome.

gingerguineapig · 03/08/2023 10:00

I think it depends where you are - although it's not been really hot and sunny this year, there has been quite a lot of variation in the weather (May was sunny but cool because there was a cold wind much of the time, June was warm/hot and sunny, July has been mid-range and mixed - it has rained but not usually torrential, which means the rain has soaked in and not flooded places). The blackberries are out and looking good, so I don't think it's been a washout here by any means. But I can't speak for other areas of the country.

gingerguineapig · 03/08/2023 10:02

Also weather being autumnal in August isn't remotely unusual.

I still remember a radio forecast some years ago when the announcer said it would be about 4 degrees overnight and then commented - it is still August!

JusthereforXmas · 03/08/2023 10:03

Nope I agree... wheres my heatwave.

I use to hate heat (feeling too hot, sweating, sunburn) but the older I get the more the cold and damp effect me. I seize up and ache, its effecting my breathing and risk of viruses are higher in this current enviroment which is hell for us with weak immune systems.

I feel robbed this year that I'm getting no respite from it.

Dotjones · 03/08/2023 10:06

The gulf stream is a primary driver of weather patterns and climate in the UK, and some of the impacts of it slowing for the UK include a much colder overall climate and increased extreme rainfall events / unpredictable rainfall patterns.

I think this is an important point and one I use to counter the climate change activists' argument about "global warming" - if it dicks around with the gulf stream the UK won't be as badly affected. The planet heats up, but the thing that makes our climate unusually warm will lessen in effect. It more-or-less balances out so there's nothing for us to worry about really.
