Or know anything about it?

Dh has been offered a position there, we’re from The North, I know nothing about the place!

"Milton" is derived from Mill Town - so you can imagine why there are dozens around the UK.

There are countless places with names derived in a similar way such as North Town, South Town, West Town, King's Town (Norton, Sutton, Weston, Kingston).

TakenRoot · 01/08/2023 00:39

OP, now we are all on tenterhooks about which Milton, could you please ask your DH for the address on the job offer and surprise us?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 01/08/2023 01:39

Can you ask DH for clarification please, before I split my sides laughing?

I used to live in a very small village near Cambridge called Bourn.

One day my friend and I got chatting to a woman we didn't recognise (it was the sort of village where you knew everyone) who explained she'd just moved into a rental property with her 3 children. Her husband was working abroad but was due to start a new job in Bourn, so she'd moved here with the children to settle them into the school before he came back.

She then confused us by talking about planning to visit different schools with names we didn't recognise. There was only one school in the village. After some digging it transpired that her husband had told her he had been offered a job in "Bourn" and she had somehow hit on our tiny village rather than thr then of Bourne in Lincolnshire. Her face when we explained there was another Bourn/Bourne, and that from the sound of it her husbands new job was in Lincolnshire was priceless.

We never saw her again.

I live near a large city that shares its name with a well known historical monument nearly 300 miles away, so obviously plenty of scope for confusion of the unaware.

When we moved into this house the previous owners left a large and hideous piece of furniture that I thought I'd have a go at selling on eBay.

To my surprise and delight it sold for over £100, but while making arrangements with the buyer I had to give them the sad news that we weren't anywhere near their local castle and it would take them rather longer than just popping out to collect their new purchase.

To their credit they did come to collect although I don't think the DH who trailed into the house was quite as enthusiastic about it as his DW and I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall when she'd informed him what she'd planned for them to do that Sunday.

It’s the Newt pub/restaurant I think and Somerset hotel I think, so Googling it, is it indeed this tiny place? Anyone live there and can give me some info of life there? It sounds idyllic tbh, but possibly v expensive

The Newt in Somerset is a country hotel and estate The Newt in Bruton, near Castle Cary and Frome in Somerset. I think this might be the hotel/"pub"you mean. There's a village a couple of miles from Bruton called Milton Clevedon. It's not uncommon to drop part of a village name around there, so it could well be where your husband's colleague means.

I know the area well, DM lived there for 20 years. It's a nice part of the world - well heeled and rural. If you're a city girl, it's probably not for you. Bruton and CC are full of twee independent shops, but only a tiny Co-op each. It's a bit "Boden and Bugaboo" belt, but pleasant enough. Nearest cities - Bath and Bristol, but a bit of a hike, but there's a train station at Castle Cary (about 1.25 hrs to Bristol). Smaller (much) towns - Shepton Mallet (Sainsbury's, Tesco), Yeovil (hospital, multiplex, Tesco, run down), Sherborne (medieval, lovely town, Waitrose), Frome around, but it's the kind of place where you'll need to drive everywhere, especially if you have teenagers.

Augend23 · 01/08/2023 05:44

I think my favourite thing about this is that not only you don't know where it is, but you think that your colleague does - how would they have got the right Milton if you didn't tell them which county?!

SquishyGloopyBum · 01/08/2023 05:58

Op, instead of relying on a woman at work, why haven't you asked your DH where the fuck his new job is?

Just a thought.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2023 06:02

Maybe we can tell you about all the different Miltons and you can pick the one you like best and your DH can look for a job near there?

How do you know, have you actually asked your husband?

Wakingfartooearly · 01/08/2023 10:38

Yes last night when he got back, he looked it up and said this morn
If anyone knows the area well/has lived there, please can you tell me more about it, sounds a nice area for kids?

Bruton is indeed lovely and is indeed very expensive.... on the plus side you would have Johnny Depp and Stella McCartney as neighbours

JanglyBeads · 01/08/2023 10:47

Maybe ask MNHQ for an addition to your thread title and then relevant people will click on it....

MissCherryCakeyBun · 01/08/2023 10:51

It's just down the road from where I live in the "cheap seats" Yeovil. Lovely places to eat out and gorgeous countryside gets a bit manic in the local area at the end of every June especially on the side nearer to Pilton (Glasto) out of Bruton there are plenty of pretty villages with more affordable housing. Shopping is a bit more of an issue as Yeovil is rubbish for shopping and Taunton can be not much better. But it depends on what you're used too.
We moved from Harpenden 5 years ago and love it in Somerset we are moving again soon to a small village to get a forever home.
Take into account that many houses in the villages round Somerset are on heating oil and not gas. Also more rural homes are also not on main's drainage. The phone signal is also rubbish and as for the broadband speed it's HmmHmmHmm

Housing is pricey, and there seems to be a disproportionately high number of private schools!

We used to love holidays there when dm was there, lots of holiday stuff going on for kids, but obvs can't comment on term time or schools. I live in a similarly rural part of Yorkshire, and my advice would be, if you have teens, or younger children who will become teens, be prepared to drive A LOT.

And the mobile phone network coverage/broadband speeds can be poor in the wider BA7 area.

Can you use the quote function, now we have to scroll back hunting for the post with the elusive Milton😀

Oh the irony of the quote in my post asking for a quote not working 😂

JanglyBeads · 01/08/2023 20:39

It's near Briton/Yeovil in Somerset, apparently....

On the negative side George Osborne
