And they are everywhere. Obviously barking and shitting which is annoying anyway. But also running and shitting around every tiny bit of green space in cities so that no one else can use these places apart from dog owners. Even when you go to a pub or café half the time these days it's "dog friendly" (why do we all have to be fucking "friendly" btw? "Tolerant" I could at least understand). You can't escape the fucking things. At work we even have dullards cacking on about how they want "office dogs" - nightmare as far as I'm concerned and really if you're going to be accommodating people's personal life at work surely a fucking crèche would be a higher pissing priority. Pet dogs don't even do anything. They literally just exist so that people can have pet dogs. Why the fuck are they suddenly everywhere?

Jeez talk about exaggerating. I have two dogs. I even have a cat! I love my animals. I’ve worked at rescue kennels so picking up poo is nothing for me.

I even have kids who go poo picking!!

Soubriquet · 31/07/2023 17:33

Oh and I would love to see how my tiny 2.5kg dog could rip your throat out. She’s literally the size of a shoe…you could boot her across a field before she ever got near your flesh

Papernotplastic · 31/07/2023 17:37

A stepladder?

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/07/2023 17:43

I actually love dogs (and cats) and their presence doesn't bother me at all as long as they are well trained and non-aggressive. No problem there whatsoever.

I do, however, find it increasingly tiresome the amount of conversation and social engagement which seems to revolve around them in the office.

Post COVID it seems to be absolutely normal for people not only to have their hounds audible in the background (couldn't care less about this) but for them to be integrated into work calls at the flipping time. I love Rover/Duke/Fido/Lady to bits but I don't necessarily want to have to spend an obligatory 15 minutes talking to and about him at the start of every fricking Teams call.

I also find that often there is a correlation between the people who are most militant about how much they hate other people's children and the people who insist on foisting their love for their animals onto the world at large.

People who will call out the tiresomeness of having to look at other people's baby pics will happily share dozens of pictures of their animals. While I don't mind it (and in some cases like it), I do find the hypocrisy irritating. There's nothing about a dog or cat which makes it intrinsically less annoying than a baby. Too much of any of this is nauseating, regardless of the species.

🤣.
Love this.

Do have some sympathy with people who are afraid of dogs as they are allowed in a lot of places now. But as a dog owner it’s lovely to be able to take them places.

I think it’s a small % of owners that don’t pick up behind themselves. But they do spoil it for everyone, including other dog owners.

balkanscot · 31/07/2023 17:58

I tolerate dogs as long as I don’t have to interact with them. I once had a big, slobbery, muddy dog jump up on me (front paws on my front type thing) which froze me. The owner’s response in a miffed voice: “Don’t you like dogs???”

Bloody hell! 🙄🤬😂

Boomboom22 · 31/07/2023 09:40

If a dog actually licks you or your kids face or puts its paws on you that is assault and illegally out of control. The law says under control, touching someone in public is seriously out of control. I would be taking pics, videos and following up as best as possible with dog warden, police etc. We need to push back and use the law that exists, how anyone could think it's OK for their beast to actually touch someone and maybe kill them if young or older. Knocking people over is as bad as biting them. I do hope that dog that knocked over the old man was put down. Out of control is not friendly! The expression lick you to death is also very scary 😨.

You are bloody ridiculous

I now have a vision of you standing there’ll screaming assault because a dogs tail touched you as it walked by. Seriously.

Dogs might drool, but they don't spit. Alpacas now, they spit and I think goats might if pressed. Don't press goats if you don't like spit.

I am surrounded by goats and hand rear them and interact all day with them and have never seen one spit. Not sure what would trigger them to do it. I know people report they do, I have never seen any of ours do it. Even competing males who can do seriously disgusting things to show dominance.

gingerguineapig I simply don't go into houses which have a dog, not even if the owners say they will put it in another room. The house will always smell and will just feel grubby to me. If it offends people I am too old to get worked up about it.

I would willing babysit for some relatives so they could have nights out but they have a dog so no.

A friend acquired a dog in lockdown so I have not been to her house since. We meet at the only dog free cafe in town instead.

Wow! Maybe that’s why they got the dog - To keep you at arms length. You sound delightful.

Oatycookies · 31/07/2023 18:06

Only dog owners would be so self obsessed and delusional to suggest not liking dogs is psychopathic 😅

You never hear cat owners or people who owns snakes or rabbits etc make such bizarre statements. And not liking pets does NOT equal not liking animals.

I donate regularly to an animal sanctuary where I “foster” elephants and I’m passionate about the preservation of endangered species. I also plan to adopt a plant based diet in the near future ( already cut down on meat and dairy) because i think modern farming is questionable in the way it treats animals . And even with the kind of pets (eg. Dogs) I don’t like I wouldn’t go out my way to harm any and never have.

MinnieTruck · 31/07/2023 18:07

I agree with you! Why do dogs have to be EVERYWHERE. It makes zero sense and is completely unnecessary.

One time I was in H&M and this lady and her dog were standing close behind me. Her dog was pulling on the leash, sniffing and practically licking my toes. I asked her kindly if she can move her dog from me. She literally screamed saying, ‘EXCUSE ME?!’ Again, I said can you move your dog from me. She literally gave me the dirtiest look and kissed her teeth.

I just turned around and paid for my items. It took everything in me to not be a typical South Londonder and go back and forth with her. I also had my 1 year old at the time so that would have been ridiculous😂

Anyway, my point is. Bringing your dogs into spaces where only Guide dogs used to be allowed and getting shitty with people when they ask your dog to move is just ridiculous. Why can’t people just take their dogs on walks and that’s that? Why do they have to be in restaurants, cafés, cinema’s and bloody H&M?!

AlwaysGinPlease · 31/07/2023 18:09

@Boomboom22 have you sought professional help? You sound unwell when you discuss this.

Gross. I’m hyper vigilant now so i tend to swerve dogs in shops etc and haven’t had any encounters like that . if I see one in a restaurant I’ll either move or leave if I haven’t ordered yet, but I seen one in the library today. In the children’s section as well. Absolute nonsense.

And here come the 🤡 to tell me they’d prefer dogs to children in the children’s area of the library.

SerafinasGoose · 31/07/2023 18:13

They're now in shops. Including very small shops. When did that start? Owners used to be required to tie them up outside.

I don't want to buy merchandise that's been rubbed up against by dogs and exposed to hair, drool, etc.

Not sure when this dynamic suddenly changed or who thought it was a good idea.

OlympicProcrastinator · 31/07/2023 18:16

missmollygreen · 30/07/2023 21:01

I feel the same about children, running around, screaming, throwing toys and shit everywhere.
75% of people will like my dog, a lot less will like random children.

Lol what crazy arse children have you been around? None of my kids have thrown toys or shit when out and about.

Twentytwothousand · 31/07/2023 18:20

I love dogs. I have dogs. I agree the world has gone dog crazy and it’s out of hand. There was a dog friendly screening of Barbie. Give me strength.

Missola · 31/07/2023 18:22

Op is right, they’ve a pain in the ass. It’s beyond irritating when anyone complains about bagged dog crap hanging in trees and about 98% of dog owners pipe up ‘I would never do that I’m a responsible owner’ - clearly nonsense as it’s absolutely everywhere that you go.

People that compare ‘fur babies’ to children are deluded. You either don’t have children yourself or you’re just lying to yourself.

Anyone that says ‘oh and I don’t love your little darlings’ (always the same way of phrasing the passive aggressive insult towards young kids) - I don’t care. They have more right to exist on this planet then your smelly dog, my child doesn’t crap on the floor when we go for a walk, I don’t hang their dirty nappies in the trees & they’ll be paying your pension when your old! Also a lot of people I know magically pack them off to be re homed as soon as they actually have a ‘skin baby’ 🙃

Dear lord you are miserable !? Haven't read further down but what have they ever done to you? Do u step in their poo? Do they bark when u want to work from home and disturb you ? Lighten up love - they fill most peoples hearts and homes with joy, sometimes more so than ungrateful sodding kids !

GreyhoundGardens · 31/07/2023 18:26

I am a dog owner, but I agree with you. Too many people have dogs. People who don't have a fucking clue, and who treat them like people/children. Don't train them properly (or at all) or deal with any behaviour issues, don't pick up after them, don't keep them under control.

Cats and their foul shit, being left to roam wherever they want, shit wherever they want, and kill whatever they want, are still worse (IMO) though. I really don't get having a "pet" that you then allow to wander and potentially get injured or worse.

Newgirls · 31/07/2023 18:27

I’m hearing some dog regret post lockdown. Where we live you can’t get dog kennels when you go on holiday and it’s causing lots of stress. Back to work days, novelty worn off of all the walking etc. I think loads of parents got them as they think it’s a good thing for a family without thinking through the next 10 years.

Myfavouritepenguin · 31/07/2023 18:42

It does seem as if those vociferously defending our endemic dog culture have to do so via slightly pointless comparisons…

Dog poo is gross… “BUT so is cat poo” they cry. So? Are you going to pretend that people are forever dodging cat poo on the school run or in the park? Really?!

Dogs can be noisy and annoying… “BUT so are kids” they then cry. That may be true… but children are HUMAN and every single one of you was once a child. If you have even the tiniest investment in the human race you HAVE to tolerate the existence of children in society. Duh! Not so for dogs…

Are there no arguments that don’t rely on these pointless comparisons?

It's only on MN that I've encountered people who don't appear to like animals. I don't trust people who dislike animals. They are the real sociopaths.

I haven't met many people in the real world who appear to hate children, but they exist on mumsnet.

It's very unlikely that anyone is actually going to approach you and tell you they hate your dog, but it doesn't mean their inner monologue isn't going crazy with a vitriolic diatribe of dog animosity, all whilst they are smiling pleasantly and ordering a latte.

ClareBlue · 31/07/2023 18:46

Our local pub is having its first open night where all pets are welcome. We're thinking of taking our huge angry goat and scaring all the dogs into the river. Then they will never come back. Job done.
And any owners that end up in with them is just a bonus.

MrsElsa · 31/07/2023 18:51

I blame the lock down dog owners who are still apparently absolutely clueless on (1) what good dog behaviour is or even basic safety and (2) how to train or otherwise control their dog.

I've noticed local woods and play areas absolutely ruined lately as frequented by people with untrained, barking, unhappy dogs. Often running amok off leash. Not safe for DC. I've seen dogs chasing and nipping smaller ones, dogs jumping up on picnic bench tables, dogs barking uncontrolled and frightening children. Never saw any of that in these places pre lockdown!

My DDog passed away 4 years ago and I have always wanted to get another once DC old enough. But, I would be getting a small dog again and wouldn't feel safe letting them mix with 90% of the dogs around at the moment.

I have lost patience with those dog owners now and do make frowny faces and shake my head at them. Ridiculous lack of responsibility. Also, dogs are NOT FUN when badly behaved. The joy of a dog is a happy, loving dog, that you can play with and build a bond with

SlippySarah · 31/07/2023 18:55

If you genuinely prefer dogs to humans in all aspects of your life, as so many posters seem to, I don't understand how you cope with work, relationships, family, shopping, holidays? Do you just shut yourself away from life? Because dogs don't serve you in shops, drive buses or collect your bins. Do your family know that you really don't like being around them because they don't shit on the pavement and dribble on your sofa?
