God I am bored of dogs

And they are everywhere. Obviously barking and shitting which is annoying anyway. But also running and shitting around every tiny bit of green space in cities so that no one else can use these places apart from dog owners. Even when you go to a pub or café half the time these days it's "dog friendly" (why do we all have to be fucking "friendly" btw? "Tolerant" I could at least understand). You can't escape the fucking things. At work we even have dullards cacking on about how they want "office dogs" - nightmare as far as I'm concerned and really if you're going to be accommodating people's personal life at work surely a fucking crèche would be a higher pissing priority. Pet dogs don't even do anything. They literally just exist so that people can have pet dogs. Why the fuck are they suddenly everywhere?

@JMoore What a sensible post.

gingerguineapig · 31/07/2023 10:06

Germany is fine - the rules are much stricter and you have dog exercise areas so you know where to avoid if you don't like dogs, and conversely where to go if you do. Although the leads are too long - they don't tend to use the extendable leads as much but a "short" lead isn't that short. I think they also have dog licences and probably haven't got rid of their dog wardens like UK councils have.

People do need to keep an eye on what their kids do around dogs though. A friend of mine has just got a (very small) dog and we took it for a walk and sat down at a cafe with outside tables. A couple of kids came along and started stroking it without asking. Fortunately the dog is very placid and was ok with them, but the parents really should have made sure the kids didn't just come over like that.

gingerguineapig · 31/07/2023 10:10

If you dislike dogs just go to the many places that are not dog friendly

Where are all these mythical places that aren't dog-friendly? Everywhere is.

I actually wonder what you are meant to do if you work in a shop and suddenly the management decides that it is going to be dog-friendly and you don't like them, or have an allergy. You end up having to leave? Hardly fair.

I think dogs are great. True, there is the odd one that is poorly trained, but that is down to the owner, and, let’s face it, the same can be said of some humans. I love to see well behaved dogs in pubs and cafés but maybe not restaurants, or in the office. Dogs have many benefits - service dogs e.g. dogs for the blind and deaf and many more human disabilities; dogs as companions to the lonely; dogs that sniff out drugs and explosives at airports; dogs that can detect cancers etc. Dogs are proven to bring down blood pressure, they have a calming effect on patients in care homes and some schools use them for this purpose. Children brought up with dogs have a lower risk of developing allergies and have a stronger immune system, I could go on, but their main benefit is their undying love for their owner. A dog will welcome you home; comfort you when sad; make you laugh; get you out of the house for exercise, (mine is my personal trainer); and protect you from harmful strangers (mine did).

Dog walkers are out in all weathers and keep an eye out for things that are not right. There have been several instances of dog walkers in our local country park of reporting cattle that have been injured, we don’t just walk when the sun shines.

I’m fed up with hearing the anti dog brigade going on about the small number of dogs that let the side down. Their benefits far outweigh their disadvantages. The British are known as a nation of dog lovers, and long may it remain so.

Go into any town centre. Go into any park. Yeah, you'll see some dog shit not picked up by bad owners. Now look at the shit left by humans. Crisp bags, drinks bottles, fast food packing, remnants of burgers, chicken and chips, vape pens, beer cans, all kinds of crap that so many slobs just drop and walk away. Humans make far more mess than dogs ever do.

THIS!

There are a mere three dog friendly places here…. Sadly.

vivainsomnia · 31/07/2023 10:28

MNers dog haters forget that MN is a world apart and that they are in the minority in the real world.

I have every sympathy with people who don't like dogs and don't want them anywhere near them as long as they appreciate that they are the odd one, not the dog owner.

In the real world where I live, I do not encounter any of the frankly questionable experiences described here. Dogs are allowed in our shopping centre but I only have experienced dogs in shops on a very rare occasion and these were small dogs carried in bags.

Same with dogs in eating areas. Most cafes are dog friendly but it's not very often I see dogs there and if so, they are quite dogs lying under the table.

I am out a lot and just don't experience the dreadful behaviours described here. I have only ever met one person with an allergy to dogs and even then, it was nowhere as severe as MNers seem to suffer. People with and without dogs usually like them or are at worse indifferent. Those who hate dogs are rare and still manage to enjoy life away from them.

Only on MN!

Ditto the child haters. They sound odd

isitaline97 · 31/07/2023 10:31

On the other hand I've learnt of a few new places I never knew I could take my dog, Thanks dog haters! 😊🐕

Seriously though when I plan a trip and we're taking our dog so much planning goes into finding somewhere dog friendly, or somewhere with outdoor seating. Shopping is obviously difficult so we tend to resort to window shopping. I'd love to know where your all going that is so dog friendly 😂

Myfavouritepenguin · 31/07/2023 10:33

I think, as someone commented upthread, dog-lovers are a slightly different kind in that they’re not as grossed out by dog shit as the rest of us. I have friends who have dogs and they do a sort of poo-patrol before letting the kids on the lawn… one of them will go round picking up all these horrendous turds and, once they’re binned, they deem the garden fit for young children to frolic in 🤮

bossyrossy · 31/07/2023 11:24

We have a shop that is dog friendly. We much prefer dogs to come in rather than children, who touch and pick up things despite their parents telling them not to touch.

You are the owner that lets your dog sit on train tables (that other passengers use to eat on). Because your dog likes the view…

You are one of the owners that is responsible for ‘dreadful behaviours’ and gets other decent owners a bad name!!😂

You do realise the grass will be covered with cat shit, bird shit, squirrel shit all kinds of animal shit? There is no such thing as a sterile outdoor area for children to play in.

Yep and wipe it afterwards which is a lot more than most people do after they use it themselves.

Again, never had anyone show any issue with it in real life. On the opposite, I always ask the person next to me if they are ok with my -small- dog (as I would be happy to find another seat. Not once yet has someone said they were not ok or showed obvious sign they were uncomfortable.

Once again, only on NN!

Oh and I despise people who don't pick up their dog's poo. Sadly, I think quite a few of them are older people still used to a generation where this wasn't done and who struggle to bend down. Not an excuse though, it is just disgusting. Our local park is great though and never seen a poo on the common grass.

tootallfortheshelf · 31/07/2023 12:17

Orteul · 30/07/2023 21:33

Only because they can't.

They can rip your face off though. 🤷‍♀️

Ain't that the truth!
All those people who go on about dogs being better than humans are a bit thick, it doesn't occur to them that the reason dogs are loyal and obedient is they do not have the cognitive capacity to outsmart you, if they did they would kill you and eat you and drive your car.

SaturdayGiraffe · 31/07/2023 12:19

I’m afraid it was a 4 poo day at the park walk this morning. All on the running track.
🙁
The council hasn’t put any more bins in place since lockdown, or any poo bag provision. I might write to them.

I know for sure that, for example, my lawn isn’t covered in cat or fox shit or even bird shit (which, incidentally, isn’t anywhere near as offensive or toxic as dog shit) - I’d be able to see it!! My point is that people think their grass is play-ready if they’ve removed the visible dog shit… but there will be highly toxic residue still. Just like there would be if I’d had to remove animal shit from my garden 🤷‍♀️

The thing is, they apply that ‘it’s all fine now’ attitude to public places too. It’s gross. The fact that outdoors isn’t ‘sterile’ doesn’t make it fine for toddlers to be crawling through smears of dog shit, in my opinion.

Not read all 22 pages, but as a dog owner I agree. I've had dogs my whole life. My dogs get their daily walks, usually out in the countryside where possible, and that's it. They don't go to shops, pubs, restaurants or any other random place. It would bore them senseless, plus I don't see the point - what on earth could they possibly gain from it?!? I find it odd. There seems to be a culture of dogs being child replacements that "go everywhere". I certainly don't remember anything of the sort 20 plus years ago with all my childhood dogs. We would never dream of taking them anywhere but for their walks, and I'm the same now. I find it all really weird.

Absolutely not a shred of evidence for this ageist assumption

1976
dogs - turfed out for the day, ran around the estate in packs, went home to be fed
Children - school holidays, turfed out for the day, ran around the estate in packs went home to be fed
2023
dogs- doggies day care, go everywhere with owners
Children- childcare activities and are constantly supervised by parents

There are not a lot of differences, really 😉😂
