And they are everywhere. Obviously barking and shitting which is annoying anyway. But also running and shitting around every tiny bit of green space in cities so that no one else can use these places apart from dog owners. Even when you go to a pub or café half the time these days it's "dog friendly" (why do we all have to be fucking "friendly" btw? "Tolerant" I could at least understand). You can't escape the fucking things. At work we even have dullards cacking on about how they want "office dogs" - nightmare as far as I'm concerned and really if you're going to be accommodating people's personal life at work surely a fucking crèche would be a higher pissing priority. Pet dogs don't even do anything. They literally just exist so that people can have pet dogs. Why the fuck are they suddenly everywhere?

@MerinoCashmere

I gave up long ago. Frothing dog haters don't listen to reason.

Jujubes5 · 31/07/2023 08:27

I like dogs - but dogs that walk to heel, sit quietly while you eat -never ever come across those nowadays.

JamSandle · 31/07/2023 08:28

I absolutely love dogs. But my issue is more with owners than dogs. Recently I was staying somewhere where someone had brought a pet dog. Until about 4 in the morning there was non stop barking.

My issue is people who get dogs but don't train them or don't consider others.

Courgeon · 31/07/2023 08:31

I love animals including dogs but agree in this country it's too much now. A dog ran under my feet the other day on a very crowded pavement and i nudged it accidentally and it whimpered. Owner glared at me but I didn't apologise as it was very crowded I didn't see it and I'd done nothing wrong. Pick your dog up or walk round rather than allowing it to get under people's feet on those extendable leads.

I grew up with dogs and we didn't feel the need to take them everywhere with us. It's a modern phenomenon. I don't like getting in dog owners cars as they stink and I don't want to smell. I won't allow them round to mine as they scare my cats and make a mess/smell.

Noticeably in France/Spain/Italy you don't see them everywhere, it's a British obsession and it's highly irritating.

ivybx · 31/07/2023 08:33

@XenoBitch what has this got to do with anything ? The point is people are saying I'd rather have dogs than children but what comparison do they even have ?? Very strange, most dog people in my opinion are weird. Dogs are animals at the end of the day but owners treat them as people and that is something they are not.

LlynTegid · 31/07/2023 08:34

Office dogs 100% no, except for anyone who has an assistance dog.

There does need to be some restriction on pet ownership, I'd just start with the few breeds of dogs (and cross breeds) that attack people and have caused harm or worse.

The acceptance of dogs in cafes, pubs etc strikes me as something which has happened because of the fear of losing business if you don't, and may businesses being on small margins. Many I expect would not accept dogs if everywhere else did.

LlynTegid · 31/07/2023 08:34

did the same, and did not accept them.

Lovesacake · 31/07/2023 08:35

Where are you all living where public spaces are overrun with dogs?? I would LOVE that! I go out walking most days and am always excited to encounter the occasional dog but they definitely aren’t everywhere round here. I feel deprived!

Myfavouritepenguin · 31/07/2023 08:38

I definitely don’t feel as strongly as some on here, but I absolutely loathe dog shit. It ruins whole days out. It’s all very well saying you pick up after your dog, but are you telling me that a patch of grass from which you’ve just removed shit is now safe for my toddler to play on? I don’t think so.

renovationheavenandhell · 31/07/2023 08:38

I often wonder with these harrowing child abuse cases you hear about how did not one notice or think not to say anything then I see posts like @NoLeaveIt and @missmollygreen and I think ah yes….if we’re taking about sociopaths

Finding this thread unbelievable! I guess I'm one of the weirdos who loves taking my dog to the pub/cafe/anywhere that allows him. I love seeing a dog in a pub or on a train. My dog would prefer to be out with me than stuck at home alone & so many people ask to say hello/pet him. Dogs bring joy!

I also think kids are much more of a nuisance than dogs. I get irritated easily by other peoples kids but never by a dog.

If you dislike dogs just go to the many places that are not dog friendly.

This post is hilarious, you think it is "unbelievable" that people don't like dogs or more to the point don't like dogs everywhere but you state that you get irritated by other peoples kids! Why don't you understand then that some people can get irritated by other peoples dogs?

You also say dogs bring joy! Well not to me they don't. And how do you know your dog prefers to be out with you then "stuck at home"? As someone else has pointed out they are not children that need to be entertained they are animals and probably quite capable at staying at home chilling for a few hours when you are out they don't need constant stimulation. I live in Ireland and thankfully we haven't embraced the dogs allowed everywhere trend yet please god we don't

JMoore · 31/07/2023 08:48

All of you who don't like seeing dogs in restaurants, cafés, shops etc. don't ever come to Germany! We do take our dogs pretty much everywhere. No one makes a fuss about it. It is not uncommon to sit in a nice restaurant, and you only notice the dog at the next table when they get up to leave. In shops, dogs quietly stand next to their owners. Anyone who doesn't like dogs, gives them a wide berth. People do pick up after their dogs (if you don't, other dog owners will tell you off).

My dog (a Coton de Tulear) can be left alone at home for a few hours without any problems, but she is happiest when she's with her family, no matter where we are.

A big difference is maybe that it theraris a list of dogs in Germany, eg. pitbulls, Staffordshire bullterriers etc., that are illegal to own, or must at least be muzzled and on a short leash in public, plus the dog has to be assessed whether it is dangerous - and the owner also has to provide papers (from the police), has to get a "dog handlers licence", has to pay higher dog tax, and needs special insurance. You don't see a lot of those dogs out in public.

I feel the same about children, running around, screaming, throwing toys and shit everywhere.
75% of people will like my dog, a lot less will like random children.

At least children grow up and modify their behaviour as they go. A dog is a dog and will still lick its balls then try and lick me whether it is four or fourteen.

June628 · 31/07/2023 09:10

Totally agree. Especially since having children. Fed up of dogs coming up to lick them and dumb owners cooing that they’re really friendly. I don’t care just keep your mutt away from me.

It's only on MN that I've encountered people who don't appear to like animals. I don't trust people who dislike animals. They are the real sociopaths.

I love dogs and grew up with them but I must admit it's getting a bit mad, there's a cafe I love that's become
Dog friendly, loads of low coffee tables and sofas so you can't put your drink and cake down anymore without it getting sniffed or licked. I had my coffee in my hands the other day and wasn't quick enough. A dog wagged it's tail into my bacon sandwhich and got fur on it. I was cross and asked the owner to replace and he wouldn't because it hadn't been licked Hmm

Dogs are fab. They don't need to be everywhere. Lots of new owners are shit

LivingDeadGirlUK · 31/07/2023 09:19

I quite like dogs although wouldn't get one myself, I wouldn't have the time to look after it properly. However I do agree with a PP that there should be a dog license and associated tax with dog ownership. This could then be used to provide more poo bins and dedicated dog parks, so everyone else can enjoy green spaces without off lead dogs charging about, especially people with young kids and who are scared of dogs. I think that dogs should only be allowed off lead in designated dog parks, and nowhere else.

dottiedodah · 31/07/2023 09:24

I adore all dogs.however I don't feel they belong in the workplace. They should be out and about in the fresh air.many young Professionals love their dogs though, and need to be encouraged

Here is an interesting question. On Mumsnet are dogs now more hated than MILs and Health Visitors?

After reading this thread I think they are! 😂

Boomboom22 · 31/07/2023 09:40

If a dog actually licks you or your kids face or puts its paws on you that is assault and illegally out of control. The law says under control, touching someone in public is seriously out of control. I would be taking pics, videos and following up as best as possible with dog warden, police etc. We need to push back and use the law that exists, how anyone could think it's OK for their beast to actually touch someone and maybe kill them if young or older. Knocking people over is as bad as biting them. I do hope that dog that knocked over the old man was put down. Out of control is not friendly! The expression lick you to death is also very scary 😨.

Geordie01 · 31/07/2023 09:55

Would much rather have a dog in a coffee shop than a screaming toddler

My DM has a not-so-miniature dachshund that is pampered to within an inch of her life. She's grossly overweight; terrible for a breed known for severe back problems. She's rarely walked because she struggles with any distance, DM has been told by the vet many, many times to put her on a diet.

DM won't listen, because the dog is her baby 🙄🙄 She's also had next to no training, she's allowed to jump up and sniff crotches, claw/bite the shit out of your feet, and beg for food which DM insists you let her have.

DM is one of the problematic dog owners, ime. She might love the baby dog, but she's wilfully shortening her lifespan by ignoring the vet's warnings. That's not being a sensible dog owner, it's being a bloody irresponsible one.

I've worked with looked after children. Mainly very hard to place children who were removed into care due to abuse that resulted in conviction of the parents. I've read the chronologies of these children and I can assure you that in most cases not only was their abuse towards the children but also of family pets. Always perpetrated by men.

There has been a lot of research into the link between psychopathy and animal abuse, lack of empathy towards humans and lack of empathy towards animals.

I can spam you with lots of links to research in this area if you like? but I'm guessing you won't read it.
