Someone mentioned Hitler had a dog and was vegetarian. Apparently Hitler used to kick and beat his dog Blondie. Then he would break down and beg the dog for forgiveness. So, not all dog people are sane, at least that is known!
I agree too, there are too many dogs, and too many poor owners. There are unscrupulous breeders and unscrupulous foreign rescus selling puppies. The net result is suffering. I would happily pay a dog tax, I already pay for insurance, vets bills, food, a walker, jabs. I try to give my rescue dog a good life, and I train him. I don't allow him to bother people and I clean up after him.
But my main point remains. Many cruelties in this world happen because of so called human rationality we have great intelligence and as animals we have the privilege of outrunning evolution, harnessing and shaping nature, understanding the laws of physics, and the creativity to solve complex problems, and yet our achievements come to nowt when we are destroying our habitat, killing each other, reducing the value of living things purely to economic exchange values. This is why I think that reason is all well and good, but without empathy and love we are nothing better than the lowest of all animals, and yet we are worse still because with our superior reason we have no excuses. That is sociopathic.
And, it's interesting to me that some of the children and adults I've worked with who show sociopathic tendency have all been cruel to animals. It's a known phenomena.
I think also that there are more dogs, but this possibly corresponds with a shift in people towards greater hygiene, greater consumer spending and higher consumption, a shift towards a more individuated, self expressing identifications, towards greater levels of narcism (not clinical) and isolation. Even sex is sanitised in the form of pornograhy.....no need to get dirty, no need to connect, no need to touch another body. I could go on....but the hysteria around "dog spit, arse licking" etc, ...is similar to our squeamishness with other things. We no longer go to Tyburn and watch a hanging, and yet we know that great atrocities happen in our name. We don't go to war on foot with just a sword and a shield and sleep on a pallet with our dogs.
