Jacket potato toppings...

Debate in the office. Jacket potatoes need butter & a wet topping. My reccomendation is a can of m&s beef curry, mayo ( yes I'm weird! ) and sour cream pop chips for a poppadom effect. My colleague is partial to tuna mayo or cheese and beans and manager loves chilli con carne. Not one but two other colleagues don't think you need butter and are happy with just cheese! The horror. I think my face said it all as one actually laughed at me and how aghast I was. What is acceptable on a jacket potato please?

I never add butter because IF I add cheese, that is fatty enough!

I like home made coleslaw or bacon, pineapple, spring onions and a little cheese

I hate butter. For me it’s beans first then a tiny sprinkle of cheese on top.

No,no, no - it's cheese then beans 😄😉
The heat from the potato below plus the heat from the beans above melts the cheese nicely.

I like cheese and onion as a topping, or chili and cheese. Tuna and sweetcorn in the summer. Liking OP's curry / faux poppadom idea (ignoring the mayo) - going to give that a go tomorrow, except I might get actual poppadoms.

Coleslaw should never be allowed anywhere near a jacket potato.

Putting a cold topping on a jacket potato is unforgivable. 🤮🤮.

Heavensalongwayaway · 30/07/2023 18:54

Butter and salt definitely. Then coleslaw and cheese. Or tuna mayo

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 30/07/2023 18:55

Cheese and beans is my favourite, with lots of butter.

Can I please inform you all of Jacket Potato Turkish style. Jacket potatoes are usually served next to a waffle stall that works similarly. You are given a pad with all the conceivable toppings and tick all that you want - these include but are not limited to

  • peas
  • russian salad (also potato based)
  • kisir (cous cous type salad)
  • mini hot dogs
  • yoghurt based sauces
  • ketchup
  • mayo
  • pickles
  • butter
  • cheese

There is no limit and no frowned upon combo, in fact they usually look at me like ‘is that all?’

UK though I am butter, chilli and cheese. I’m that order. And always butter, irrespective of topping.

Cheese and beans, or an M&S tin ofchicken curry, but no mayo!

WeWereInParis · 30/07/2023 19:00

We hadn't even thought of how they're cooked

When I can be bothered, this is what I do:

Bake potato as normal.
Chop and fry some bacon and spring onion.
Cut potatoes open, scoop out the insides and mash them.
Stir in the bacon and onion, and a little grated cheese (and mustard if you want) into the scooped out insides.
Put the mix back into the skins and put grated cheese on top.
Put under the grill for 10 mins until cheese on top is melted and bubbly.
Devour.

Butter, garlic mushrooms and cheese

Astrabees · 30/07/2023 19:04

Mayo and yoghurt with spring onion, grapes, smoked tofu and chopped tarragon.

Why would you even think of putting a "wet" topping on a baked potato?! 🤢 Cheese is fine, the thought of beans or curry as a topping... 🙅‍♀️

therealmccoy1234 · 30/07/2023 19:06

I will eat jacket potatoes with any sort of topping, with the exception of beans which are just gross. I don't care if it's dry - a lot of cheese and mayo with some tomatoes and onions on the side is a particular fave. Am intrigued by the m&s curry, mayo, crisps combination @CatsForeverAndEver - it sounds gross and delicious all at the same time

NortieTortie · 30/07/2023 19:08

No butter. I can't tell the difference with and without so I don't bother. Cheese then beans or tuna mayo then cheese. Sometimes Bolognese.

oohyoudevilyou · 30/07/2023 19:12

Non dairy spread or a splash of olive oil, plus Branston pickle

Soubriquet · 30/07/2023 19:13

I’m one who has just cheese. No butter

I don’t even like the cheese on top of my potato so it melts. I have it on the side, so I can scoop up some potato, scoop up some cheese and eat it that way. But I’m fully aware I have a very strange appetite

WishIranonBatteriesNotSleep · 30/07/2023 19:14

Butter and baked beans

WickedSerious · 30/07/2023 19:14

Cheese and coleslaw for me.

YesitsBess · 30/07/2023 19:18

OK so this isn't for your everyday lunch but hear me out:

Best jacket pots I ever had were based on an article by AA Gill and sounded so outlandish I had to give it a bash.

A small sweet jacket potato with a sliver of salted butter, topped with sour cream and caviar.

It was absolutely delicious, ridiculously expensive and has become a Christmas favourite. I've found more ethical caviar now too.

For non Christmas ones I like a prawn Marie Rose sauce myself.

caringcarer · 30/07/2023 19:19

I dry fry bacon lardons and add low fat creme fresh and a blob of blue cheese. I pour it over the jacket potato. I also like this topping on tagiatelli too.

Alargeoneplease89 · 30/07/2023 19:24

M&s chicken in white wine sauce is yum with a JP and absolutely butter is a must!

FixTheBone · 30/07/2023 19:27

Firecracker potato

Stire fried Tuna, sliced chilli and spring onion, sesame seeds/oil diced red pepper. Wilt in a few spinach leaves and soy at the end.

WaxhamSeals · 30/07/2023 19:31

Just butter, lots of it, with an extravagant amount of freshly ground black pepper. Perfect

dottiedodah · 30/07/2023 19:38

Loads of butter grated strong cheddar. Mixed in a bowl with potato scooped from skin . Replace on jacket skins and place under grill until light golden brown yum!

TheKeatingFive · 30/07/2023 19:41

People who pull toilet brushes in the dishwasher.

I dont think this actually happened. It's an urban myth.

As for baked potatoes, I have no strong views, but cheese without butter would be too dry for me. Also, why waste an opportunity to eat butter?

Whitewolf2 · 30/07/2023 19:41

Melted butter is the best bit of the jacket potato! These people are not living!
My fave toppings are tuna mayonnaise, prawn rose Marie and coronation chicken. They all require butter.
