Jacket potato toppings...

Debate in the office. Jacket potatoes need butter & a wet topping. My reccomendation is a can of m&s beef curry, mayo ( yes I'm weird! ) and sour cream pop chips for a poppadom effect. My colleague is partial to tuna mayo or cheese and beans and manager loves chilli con carne. Not one but two other colleagues don't think you need butter and are happy with just cheese! The horror. I think my face said it all as one actually laughed at me and how aghast I was. What is acceptable on a jacket potato please?

Butter the beans then cheese, pop in microwave to help cheese melt. There used to be a little cafe opposite my work that did this and it was the best ever!

lemonyellows · 30/07/2023 18:00

Cottage cheese and chopped bacon is the best

Wow thank you for your responses! We hadn't even thought of how they're cooked but are all united on the no microwaving lol, someone has just suggested prawns in Marie Rose sauce with crispy onions is lovely. Might give it a go. I have to admit my jacket potatoes are so unhealthy, I spoon butter on mine hahaha

You do need butter if going with just grated cheese, but no need for butter if anything 'wet', like tuna and mayo, chilli, curry, or baked beans.

Blueeyes13 · 30/07/2023 18:02

Sorry, I am one that just has cheese! Butter and cheese are too fatty for me. Love stuffed jackets with cheese and bacon though

BrightLightTonight · 30/07/2023 18:03

Prawn cocktail (with butter)

I live with a monster. My son's favourite filling is cheese, beans and tuna mayonnaise. No butter😱

Hahaha see I could get on board with this! Two incredible topping choices combined

Cheese, grilled bacon and sweetcorn with beans on the side. If time, scoop out the spud and mix with sweetcorn and bacon and top with cheese and grill. YUM

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/07/2023 18:06

I like bacon and mushrooms lightly fried together, soured cream and chives or parsley.

Also, sauteed leeks, Philadelphia and cheddar.

I think people who have beans on a jacket with salad or coleslaw on the side are absolute monsters! Shock

DelilahBucket · 30/07/2023 18:06

Butter, salt and pepper are the base, with the potato mashed and mixed before further toppings are added. I used to enjoy garlic butter with plain cottage cheese. If there is enough butter then just grated cheese is fine, but I do prefer some kind of sauce like tuna mayo or chilli.

FreyafromLondon · 30/07/2023 18:07

Lots of butter, prawns with thousand island and a sprinkle of pepper

Sunshineclouds11 · 30/07/2023 18:07

I like beans cheese and red onion, butter included.

UndercoverCop · 30/07/2023 18:08

Jacket potato solely cooked in the oven with garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper rubbed on the skin, cut in half, none of the fancy crosses (there's a place for them just not with this topping), gap in the middle filled with salsa, guacamole and sour cream (first two preferably home made) butter on each of the potato halves with a dollop of left over chilli -veg or meat not fussy, cheese on top.

Patcherdog · 30/07/2023 18:08

Butter is required in addition to either cheese, tuna mayo or chilli con carne

Ponoka7 · 30/07/2023 18:08

I sometimes feel like just cheese, it's like having cheesy chips, no wet topping needed.

Dombasle · 30/07/2023 18:13

Simple - butter, cheddar and sliced raw red onion.

A bit more effort - butter and cauliflower and or broccoli cheese.

A main meal - make a thick cheddar cheese sauce and add spinach and mushrooms, garlic to taste.

dullandgrey · 30/07/2023 18:16

Butter first, then salt and pepper, cheese on top so it melts. Then beans and salad on the side. Yummmmmm.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/07/2023 18:17

We often have jackets with lots of cauliflower cheese, not as a topping though.

As a topping, my favourite is beans and cheese - but the inside of the spud has to be mashed with salt, pepper and butter first.

Jackets are best avoided across the pond, where they think a tiddly amount of sour cream and chives will do - heathens! - and you have to ask for butter.

IForgotOurSong · 30/07/2023 18:18

Cheese, cherry tomatoes and a small amount of pepperoni tastes delicious like pizza.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 30/07/2023 18:19

Butter, cheese (preferably melted, rather than just dumped on straight from the fridge) and some chilli flakes

Or chilli con carne, veggie mixed bean chilli is ok too.

OhcantthInkofaname · 30/07/2023 18:20

I'm in the US and my favorite would be taco fillings.

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 30/07/2023 18:31

I love the feeling of the hot potato/cold topping so I have proper butter from the fridge, salt and pepper and either normal coleslaw or Sainsbury’s pink slaw on the side

LemonLight · 30/07/2023 18:36

It's tuna mayo with spring onions from me and with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese if I'm really hungry! DH is a beans and cheeser. I could definitely do chilli con carne as a topper.

DH sometimes makes baked potatoes and scoops out the middle and melts butter and seasons it and then pops it back in the jacket and puts cheese on top and melts the cheese that is pretty damn good in its simplicity.

grunttheterrible · 30/07/2023 18:40

Wet toppings! I'm ok with tuna and perinaise though, which isn't super wet, but def not just cheese or butter

Dartmoorcheffy · 30/07/2023 18:41

Butter (lots) cucumber and cottage cheese but it has to be Longley farm natural full fat.
