Average Speed camera

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:02

So I have had my licence 10 years never speed, tbh see it as dangerous and don’t want to risk other people’s lives. Never been pulled over nothing ever.
Yesterday driving along a motor way, go around a roundabout the motor way has no speed signs, stupidly go by the sat nav (it’s a motor way so just assumed 70mph).
See i have passed an average speed camera as I turn in which is fine as doing 70 or under, halfway down the road there is a bloody 40mph sign, so I have slowed down to 40mph (this is half way up the road). Anyway turns out the whole road is 40mph just no sign 🙄, I’m not going to fight it as I don’t want to make it worse, and it’s miles from where I live to get a picture would be a pain. I did check it as I left so I know there was no sign. The cameras are working at the temples speed limit of 40mph. So I was doing 70mph (prob just under half the way) then 40mph just under half way the rest. So assuming averagely doing 56mph-58mph.
Seems I’m looking at 4-6points or even disqualification 🤷🏼‍♀️. First offence is there any chance of a course? I’m gutted as I never speed and it was a new area and if there had been a sign I would have stuck to it. I’m assuming it fell over although even on google maps there is no signs 🤦🏼‍♀️. Which was 2 months ago although was road work signs. Too busy talking to the kids. I’m clearly not going to try and get out of it, just really worried about the consequence tbh.

Did the camera flash, when you went past? As not all cameras work are switched on.

rwalker · 30/07/2023 10:05

See if there a Facebook page local to area ask on there for advice and pictures
and ask if you inadvertently missed a sign

WaxhamSeals · 30/07/2023 10:09

Which motorway has roundabouts?

Serena73 · 30/07/2023 10:10

I thought a similar thing had happened to me on the motorway 3 years ago, but nothing ever came of it. I even think it flashed.

Average speed cameras don’t flash. One records the time you enter a stretch of road then another records when you leave it. They then calculate what your average speed would have been to cover the distance in the time you took.

Was it a temporary speed restriction for roadworks?

ArcticSkewer · 30/07/2023 10:14

You don't have a ticket yet. Save the angst for when/if you get one and find something else to occupy your mind in the meantime.

AnneTwacky · 30/07/2023 10:14

Hi. Was the 40mph a temporary limit for the roadworks? Which motorway was it?

Not being nosey but just thought if it was a temporary speed limit and/ or we knew the
motorway, we could find more information about it. Via Google or via someone local to it.

lazyfucker · 30/07/2023 10:22

I find the OP quite confusing in places. Motorways don't have roundabouts do they? I find it hard to imagine going around a roundabout at 70 mph, which I think is what you said? I would find that too fast for a roundabout and also being on a roundabout would make me think the motorway had ended, so I would slow down anyway with or without signs. I'm also unsure how you are sure there was no sign as you checked, but you had earlier said you went by the satnav and had assumed 70 as you thought you were still on the motorway?

I also thought from the OP that you have already received a NIP but other posters don't seem to think so, so I don't know. If you haven't, you obviously need to try and forget about it until/unless one arrives. If you have, then I don't think you'll be offered a course at that speed but hopefully won't be disqualified either.

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:23

It’s the a120 sorry dual carriage way not motor way 🤦🏼‍♀️. At Braintree side. Temporary speed limit, from marks farm roundabout to galley cor, the cameras are def on for 40mph.
I was doing 40mph before but went on the new road and didn’t see any more speed signs so maybe my fault as maybe it just carried on from then. But yeah just want to know what I’m looking at as well over and I know I can’t blame my sat nav 🤣.

I literally come off the round about seeing it as a new road. But clearly it wasn’t.

As above, wait to see if you actually get a Notice of Intended Prosecution. They've got 14 days to send it so provided the car is yours and registered at your own current address you won't have too long to wait :-)

Average speed cameras do exactly what the name says; measure your average speed. That means they need you to have passed two of the yellow camera poles. The system catches your car's reg at each camera and does a speed= distance/time calculation between two points.

Living near the M1 we've had something like ten years of speed limited works in the vicinity for new barriers, all lane running etc fro 19 down to MK. There's often a AS camera on the slip but then the next one is a mile or two on. So, unless you've been well over the limit, enough to drive your average speed over that mile+ well over the prosecution threshold of around 45mph, you've nothing to worry about.

Even if you're a tad over you'll probably get the offer of a Speed Awareness' Course. Cost you £100 or so but you actually learn loads of stuff. Worth it even if it didn't avoid points!!

Popworld · 30/07/2023 10:28

As above no point worrying until later . It's happened. You'll find out within 2wks

UnsolicitedOpinions · 30/07/2023 10:28

You should have done the second half at 10 miles per hour then you would have been ok!

Or pulled over of there was space and waited

Or pulled over for a nice five minute rest in a layby?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 30/07/2023 10:31

You don't even have a ticket yet - try not to borrow worry about something that might not even happen.

And if you do get a ticket, it's not the end of the world. You have a clean license and no previous convictions so in all likelihood it will just be points and a fine, maybe a speed awareness course if you're lucky.

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:31

Thanks just have so much anxiety have 3 disabled children and live in the middle of no where so it’s playing on my mind. I’m frustrated with my self.
@UnsolicitedOpinions I was too slow because I didn’t see any other signs I literally thought I had to slow down there and did, on the way back was a thousand signs the other side and that’s when the penny dropped 🤦🏼‍♀️. Feel so stupid

@Mummy289 be prepared for a pile on. MN hates speeders

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:35

@Popworld thanks I don’t like speeders never speed I’m sure others would of done better and noticed more 🤦🏼‍♀️. However I always drive to the limit. I just wanted to see if anyone had been over by that amount.

OP posts:
CaputDraconis · 30/07/2023 10:38

The cameras are definitely working on that stretch. I live nearby and lots of people been caught

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:40

@CaputDraconis thanks. If there has just been one sign after that roundabout just one I would have slowed but but I suppose it’s 40mph from all the ways in but I didn’t realise until I google mapped it.

You don’t know yet that the camera was active and that you were timed.

(As a tip - note that roadworks average speed cameras often have “not in use” signs when the 70mph limit is active, this is when the reduced limit and cameras are active depending on the road works activity)

If the road works are not currently active for the weekend etc the cameras would still be up but restricted speed limits may not apply, or of parts of the stretch have restricted speeds then multiple cameras would be active or inactive depending on which stretch they are on - eg you may have been correct at that moment for 70 then dropping to 40 on the sign, with the earliest camera inactive as it currently covers a 70 stretch

You will find out your options if/when you get the letter, but it is not impossible to appeal a missing sign - especially if multiple drivers also did 70 then dropped

Down here in Wiltshire when Solstice services were being built junctions and a bridge was ‘relocated’. Depending on the stages of the works a reduced speed limit was applied - and this sometimes applied for only a few hours. A sign was raised with the reduced speed limit but there was a well published occasion when it had not been raised
Motorists who were caught on camera ‘speeding’ were able to successfully appeal that the sign had not been displayed
On motorist was able to quash her ban for >100mph on the basis that she was ‘only’ exceeding 70mph and not doubling 50mph

KateyCuckoo · 30/07/2023 10:41

I mean, you don't sound the most observant of drivers if you didn't notice the difference between a dual carriageway and a motorway so you probably missed the signs.
