Average Speed camera

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:02

So I have had my licence 10 years never speed, tbh see it as dangerous and don’t want to risk other people’s lives. Never been pulled over nothing ever.
Yesterday driving along a motor way, go around a roundabout the motor way has no speed signs, stupidly go by the sat nav (it’s a motor way so just assumed 70mph).
See i have passed an average speed camera as I turn in which is fine as doing 70 or under, halfway down the road there is a bloody 40mph sign, so I have slowed down to 40mph (this is half way up the road). Anyway turns out the whole road is 40mph just no sign 🙄, I’m not going to fight it as I don’t want to make it worse, and it’s miles from where I live to get a picture would be a pain. I did check it as I left so I know there was no sign. The cameras are working at the temples speed limit of 40mph. So I was doing 70mph (prob just under half the way) then 40mph just under half way the rest. So assuming averagely doing 56mph-58mph.
Seems I’m looking at 4-6points or even disqualification 🤷🏼‍♀️. First offence is there any chance of a course? I’m gutted as I never speed and it was a new area and if there had been a sign I would have stuck to it. I’m assuming it fell over although even on google maps there is no signs 🤦🏼‍♀️. Which was 2 months ago although was road work signs. Too busy talking to the kids. I’m clearly not going to try and get out of it, just really worried about the consequence tbh.

If it was a while ago you might be ok? When I got done speeding I got my ticket within a week.

first offence I was doing 83 in a 70 and just got a course no points.

also if you joined part way, you might have only been covered by one camera and therefore they won’t get your average speed…

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:43

Thanks I’m not able to get a picture I have asked on Facebook but don’t live close. Don’t think I can use google maps although even on there there is no sign after the roundabout 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️.

Average speed cameras don’t flash. One records the time you enter a stretch of road then another records when you leave it. They then calculate what your average speed would have been to cover the distance in the time you took.

@Ohdearwhatnow4 thats a good explanation of how they work 👍

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:45

It was yesterday 🤣. 🤦🏼‍♀️ came home and Googled like mad

OP posts:
Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:46

I def did one camera to the other. I think I’m so anxious as it’s 40mph so I was miles over even averagely looking at 56mph

CrotchetyQuaver · 30/07/2023 10:48

Have you had a ticket through?

I don't think I know of anyone who's been caught by average speed cameras...
I'd wait and see what happens first...

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:50

These ones are new and very much on from what I hear, a12 everyone speeds through them and swear they are not on

Were you overtaking loads of vehicles?

RocketIceLollie · 30/07/2023 10:54

I'm pretty sure those average speed cameras also clock your original speed as you enter the average speed zone, so even if you slow down to make up for the initial speed they will still have you over the limit at the start. You are gonna be quite a way over the limit so you might get a lot of points...

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:54

I didn’t speed on the a12 just meant people ignore them.

no one was on the road where I was speeding was super early 🤣

If you have been caught you’ll almost certainly be offered an awareness course. (You may not have been.) The cost is the same as the fixed penalty charge, but you don’t get any points added to your licence and it doesn’t appear on your driving record if your successfully complete the course. You also don’t have to inform your insurance company so it won’t affect your renewal quote. (I know cos I did one last year and people specifically asked these questions about if you had to declare an awareness course to insurance. )

It will cost you about £100 or so to do the course, depending on the current rate. Mostly they are by zoom now. It’s annoying and easy done but try not to worry about it. I’m currently waiting to see if I got a ticket for another offence by following a Sat Nav (accidentally driving though a place I now think was for buses and taxis only) and not using my own common sense before it was too late. Lesson learned for me whether I get the ticket or not about relying too much on the Sat Nav!

The 40 signs are on the entrance to the roundabouts not the exits from it. They are even on street view as they have been up so long 😫

You need markings on the road for that to hold up.

SerendipityJane · 30/07/2023 11:07

If you have been caught you’ll almost certainly be offered an awareness course.

But not guaranteed. As was hammered into me when I took mine. It's down to the local forces charging policy. Well worth it if it is offered though. Having done one I'd make them compulsory every 10 years.

On what basis are you “pretty sure” of this? Other than having absolutely no idea how average speed cameras work and just guessing? Or just making stuff up to upset the OP even more?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 30/07/2023 11:12

Op if you're average works out at 56 then you would be just over for a speed awareness course 53 in a 40 limit however if your speedometer over reads your speed it is possible you were actually 53 or under. If you are over it would just be a fixed penalty notice and 3 points

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 11:17

@CaputDraconis yes I saw them ones but didn’t thinking it was to do with the next road (like how would u know what way you are coming off) but off course it’s all 40mph at the minute but I had no idea 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️.

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 11:21

Thanks everyone I will update when the letter comes. I’m guessing 56mph average. As I know I did nearly 70 then slowed to 40mph. Either was clearly well over. I’m really disappointed with my self.

OP posts:
zingally · 30/07/2023 11:21

Please don't worry about getting disqualified, that just won't happen.

That only happens for REALLY serious repeated breaches. For a first time offense, going 20mph over, you might get points and a fine, but nowhere near disqual.

Were you keeping up with the flow of traffic? If everyone else was doing a similar speed to you, then likely the cameras aren't even on, and all the locals who do the road regularly no that.

But actually, the most likely outcome is nothing at all.

Did you see a national speed limit sign to let you know you were no longer in a 40mph zone? Not all roads have speed limit signs at the exit of a roundabout unless the speed limit changes.

Either way, if you've been caught they have 14 days to send you the nip so you'll find out soon enough. You then fill it out to confirm you were the driver and they will get back to you with whatever penalty options are available to you. There's nothing you can do now but wait.

bookworm44 · 30/07/2023 11:29

I think a speed awareness course would be a good idea for you. They teach you how you should know what speed you should be doing without relying on signs and how to differentiate between different roads. I found it all very helpful when i did mine a couple of weeks ago. It was at a conference centre, not online.

LadyLeo99 · 30/07/2023 11:42

That's not how average speed cameras work

AnneTwacky · 30/07/2023 11:42

Looks from the notice from highways England the reduced limit is from Mark's farm roundabout to planners interchange but I doubt you will get a ban, especially if you have a clean license at the minute.

I would wait and see if anything comes through, which it might not. I'm sure, worse case scenario you have the points on your license for a few years.

I would just keep a super look out for any temp speed limit signs next time you see a average speed camera or roadworks ahead sign. There will almost certainly be one on a 70mph road to keep it safe for any workers.

I know easy to be wise after the event but it will be ok, whatever happens next.
