Average Speed camera

So I have had my licence 10 years never speed, tbh see it as dangerous and don’t want to risk other people’s lives. Never been pulled over nothing ever.
Yesterday driving along a motor way, go around a roundabout the motor way has no speed signs, stupidly go by the sat nav (it’s a motor way so just assumed 70mph).
See i have passed an average speed camera as I turn in which is fine as doing 70 or under, halfway down the road there is a bloody 40mph sign, so I have slowed down to 40mph (this is half way up the road). Anyway turns out the whole road is 40mph just no sign 🙄, I’m not going to fight it as I don’t want to make it worse, and it’s miles from where I live to get a picture would be a pain. I did check it as I left so I know there was no sign. The cameras are working at the temples speed limit of 40mph. So I was doing 70mph (prob just under half the way) then 40mph just under half way the rest. So assuming averagely doing 56mph-58mph.
Seems I’m looking at 4-6points or even disqualification 🤷🏼‍♀️. First offence is there any chance of a course? I’m gutted as I never speed and it was a new area and if there had been a sign I would have stuck to it. I’m assuming it fell over although even on google maps there is no signs 🤦🏼‍♀️. Which was 2 months ago although was road work signs. Too busy talking to the kids. I’m clearly not going to try and get out of it, just really worried about the consequence tbh.

Bloody hell, OP made a mistake, she knows she made a mistake and was simply asking for advice on what might happen. None of us are perfect drivers. I hope it all works out ok for you OP.

Nope not misunderstood. Very clearly said that a grass strip is not a physical barrier and speed limit would not be 70. Clearly even though they are driving instructors and paid to run these courses, you know better.

Not a question of who knows better.

I'm just trying to find a definition that confirms it's not a dual carriageway without a crash barrier or similar on the reservation.

When I did a course a few years ago we were shown a four lane road with just lines separating. Not a DC; limit for cars 60.

Further down same road there was a properly constructed central grass verge. Dual carriageway; limit for cars 70.

Highway Code says - headnote to rules 137 on:

Dual carriageways

A dual carriageway is a road which has a central reservation to separate the carriageways.

It's quite probable the cameras weren't on and you won't hear anything.

I can't get over why you didn't notice, as a diligent driver who always sticks to the limit, that you were travelling at nearly double the speed of all the other vehicles? You must have gone from almost always being in the left land being overtaken to overtaking multiple vehicles?

Were you there, how do you know there were all these other vehicles?

I think she already said there wasn't any other vehicles due to the time she was travelling

Tangent: "A road" says absolutely nothing about the speed limits. Road numbering is based on importance of the route in the local and wider area. There's A roads that are rural single tracks, suburban high streets, and near-motorway-standard dual carriageways.

If they said that then they were very clearly wrong. What other BS did they tell you? I’d put in a complaint, if the idiots leading the course don’t know the rules then what hope have the attendees got?

Clickncollect · 31/07/2023 09:00

@Mummy289 sorry I haven’t read the thread in full but about 2 months ago I was caught by an average speed check doing 52mph in a 40mph area in Essex. It is my first speeding offence in 28 years of driving and I was offered the course, which I took. It was actually an interesting course and I learnt a lot!

I agree. I've been on a speed awareness course and I clearly remember them saying that it doesn't have to be a metal barrier. The highway code confirms this.
