Average Speed camera

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 10:02

So I have had my licence 10 years never speed, tbh see it as dangerous and don’t want to risk other people’s lives. Never been pulled over nothing ever.
Yesterday driving along a motor way, go around a roundabout the motor way has no speed signs, stupidly go by the sat nav (it’s a motor way so just assumed 70mph).
See i have passed an average speed camera as I turn in which is fine as doing 70 or under, halfway down the road there is a bloody 40mph sign, so I have slowed down to 40mph (this is half way up the road). Anyway turns out the whole road is 40mph just no sign 🙄, I’m not going to fight it as I don’t want to make it worse, and it’s miles from where I live to get a picture would be a pain. I did check it as I left so I know there was no sign. The cameras are working at the temples speed limit of 40mph. So I was doing 70mph (prob just under half the way) then 40mph just under half way the rest. So assuming averagely doing 56mph-58mph.
Seems I’m looking at 4-6points or even disqualification 🤷🏼‍♀️. First offence is there any chance of a course? I’m gutted as I never speed and it was a new area and if there had been a sign I would have stuck to it. I’m assuming it fell over although even on google maps there is no signs 🤦🏼‍♀️. Which was 2 months ago although was road work signs. Too busy talking to the kids. I’m clearly not going to try and get out of it, just really worried about the consequence tbh.

@RocketIceLollie I'm pretty sure those average speed cameras also clock your original speed as you enter the average speed zone

They don’t.

If the divider is only a strip of grass the speed limit isn't 70

A dual carriageway has a central reservation between the carriageways. If it's only grass then provided there's proper seperation it's a DC. Doesn't need barriers though I can see why it should.

zippitydoda · 30/07/2023 16:36

I got on at Marks Farm yesterday towards Galleys Corner and remembered the 40, so was doing 50+ I guess. I wonder if a sign is missing at the moment?

For those unsure of A road single / dual carriage way limits :

Dashcams are your friend. As long as you keep more than 14 days footage of your journeys, you can demonstrate insufficient signage.

One of the things I am still waiting for (as per the advance warning we had on the SAC) is the elimination of stupid speed limit changes - the classic being 70 dropping to 30. All the other predictions from 2014 have come to pass.

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 16:48

@zippitydoda there def isn’t a sign as you go onto the road but there is before the roundabout which I was stupid for as already doing that speed just expected a new sign at the beginning of the road but they apparently don’t need to do that. 🤦🏼‍♀️. Honestly my anxiety is so high.

That's just adding to the confusion ....

as ex caravanners, we made a point of knowing the limits (by going on a towing course from the C&CC ...)

Or pulled over of there was space and waited

Ok a motorway. Try explaining that to the police as the reason you're sitting on the hard shoulder.😀

You passed a sign telling you the speed limit is 40mph. There is no need to keep putting up signs saying the same thing. Unless you saw another sign you should have assumed the 40mph limit was still in place. Which it was.

Un7breakable · 30/07/2023 18:43

If this was recently I'd go back with someone as a passenger recording your view, showing that signs are missing.

Mummy289 · 30/07/2023 18:57

@KrisAkabusi the sign was before the round about and the round about was before the road, one of 4 roads I could of been travelling down. So yea I don’t know there wasn’t a road a sign on the new road. 40mph could have been to any of the 4 roads. People who live near there have commented on the post and agreed it’s confusing. The other side as soon as you get off the roundabout has a sign saying 40mph. Yes I have made a mistake but really didn’t see how the sign before the roundabout was to say the next road I would be taking would be that speed. Clearly it’s the first time I have seen something like this, esp on a dual carriage lane.
Im really glad there are so many perfect drivers, in 11 years I have made one mistrials which is clearly going to cost me greatly. The fact that I noticed and realised what I have done before a ticket has come through means something. Yea I’m not perfect like many of you, however I doubt I’m the only one, I have also said it’s my fault.

Also seems some people maybe perfect drivers but maybe not perfectly kind humans. I didn’t know there was such thing a perfect person but I’m mistaken. :)

User14287559 · 30/07/2023 19:09

Hopefully it will just be the course, if anything. As usual this thread is full of oh so perfect Mumsnetter drivers, so many of them here.

I did my course 2 weeks ago, unless there's a proper physical barrier it is not 70

A grass verge counts as a physical barrier. It's 70

Threecacti · 30/07/2023 20:54

It's quite probable the cameras weren't on and you won't hear anything.

I can't get over why you didn't notice, as a diligent driver who always sticks to the limit, that you were travelling at nearly double the speed of all the other vehicles? You must have gone from almost always being in the left land being overtaken to overtaking multiple vehicles?

The 2 instructors running the course must have been wrong then.

Either they were or they were misunderstood.

There is. The basic rule is that if there are streetlights it’s 30, if not, then it’s NSL (60; or 70 on dual carriageways inc motorways). Anything else needs repeat signs.

Bromptotoo · 30/07/2023 20:57

Nope not misunderstood. Very clearly said that a grass strip is not a physical barrier and speed limit would not be 70. Clearly even though they are driving instructors and paid to run these courses, you know better.

A physical barrier in the sense of could you roll a snooker ball from one side to the other. So a strip of grass would impede the ball and is a physical barrier, whereas an area of cross hatchings would impede the ball and isn’t counted as a barrier.
