White gold, what’s the point?

it’s pretty much indistinguishable from steel or silver so why pay for it in jewelry and watches?

Cheaper than platinum and sets off diamonds better than yellow gold.

caffelattetogo · 29/07/2023 08:41

Agreed. It looks like silver.

imaginationhasfailedme · 29/07/2023 08:44

I wear white gold all the time (I have a silver and yellow gold stuff as well) - wedding and engagement rings are white gold. But you've now made me question myself because I thought I'd have an answer by the time I started posting lol. And I don't. No idea actually!

Gilmorehill · 29/07/2023 08:46

It looks much better with diamonds IMHO. It’s much brighter than silver so I don’t know why anyone would think they looked similar.

weekfour · 29/07/2023 08:48

Have you ever seen it next to silver? They are not the same colour.

DarkForces · 29/07/2023 08:48

I love my white gold and diamond ring. It looks warmer than silver to me.

User63847484848 · 29/07/2023 08:50

I always thought the thing was that silver was soft and not hard wearing so hence going for white gold if you wanted silver coloured long lasting jewellery like wedding rings for example (or platinum but that’s more ££)

strawberryicecream6464 · 29/07/2023 08:51

Think it's a tougher metal. Not sure. Is platinum the most tough?

JaninaDuszejko · 29/07/2023 08:54

I don't understand the attraction of white gold. It's a gold alloy that needs replating regularly. It doesn't look like platinum (which is what it's trying to replicate), it's much yellower.

catgirl1976 · 29/07/2023 08:54

Because yellow gold is tacky af

Cincinnatus · 29/07/2023 08:55

Would never wear it. The replating would drive me mad.

SuperSange · 29/07/2023 08:55

Palladium is nicer; looks nice with diamonds and doesn't need replating.

fourandnomore · 29/07/2023 08:55

Silver tarnishes easily and is very malleable so not as strong for holding stones, there are lots of other differences - looks, the way they behave under heat, difference surface effects you can produce, but white gold is more hard wearing so for a piece you want to last forever it’s a more sensible choice than silver. Platinum is more hard wearing again and looks slightly different if you directly compare them. It’s personal choice really of course.

You could equally argue what is the point of diamonds when at a short distance they are indistinguishable from cubic zirconia.

The point is the owner always knows.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 29/07/2023 08:57

I was hospitalised by white gold jewellery (nickel allergy).

Have you seen the price of platinum? I tend to stick to titanium now for everyday jewellery.

bibbityboppityboo · 29/07/2023 08:58

I think white gold is lovely, and can distinguish it from silver and steel? I've got a watch that had a steel strap but white gold fluted bezel, you can see the difference in the metals.

The hardest element is diamond. White gold contains chromium which is one of the hardest metals so yes, it's harder than pure gold which is very soft.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 29/07/2023 08:59

I'm allergic to silver. I can wear white gold for a few hours.

DustyLee123 · 29/07/2023 08:59

Because I can only wear gold, and sometimes I want to wear silver coloured jewellery.

Catspyjamas17 · 29/07/2023 08:59

Because the point of jewellery is to wear something nice you like and not show off how much money you have. So what if people think it cost less than it did?

Quality jewellery also lasts forever and can be handed down.

fuckmyuteruslining · 29/07/2023 09:00

Anything that needs replating when worn frequently is unsuitable for wedding and engagement rings in my book. Yellow gold is classic and practical.

Hmm
BoobyDazzler · 29/07/2023 09:03

I had a white gold engagement and then wedding ring which drove me mad with the need to re-plating. Is seemed like a complete swiz. I don’t wear them any more and only wear silver jewellery, and usually vintage silver jewellery which is pretty much indestructible and doesn’t tarnish if it’s worn regularly and is easy to clean if not. Gold doesn’t suit my colouring.

TheDogthatDug · 29/07/2023 09:03

Tungsten is the way to go...

What? It’s the opposite -classic and classy.
