White gold, what’s the point?

it’s pretty much indistinguishable from steel or silver so why pay for it in jewelry and watches?

*that doesn't suit one's skin tone

No, that’s rose gold 😂

😂

Tahitiansummer · 29/07/2023 22:27

Wearing any jewellery that doesn't suit your one's tone is one if the examples of not knowing how to wear jewellery.

Highly amusing....my previous post stands.

Yusay · 29/07/2023 23:03

White gold doesn’t tarnish.
Silver does tarnish, platinum costs a fortune, and steel is grey.

brokenlore · 29/07/2023 23:07

Personally, I like a nice ring of Plutonium, it keeps your finger nice and warm

Ooer mrs!

RosesAndHellebores · 29/07/2023 23:21

My two colour wedding ring is old and battered and has stories to tell.

Some cheap 18k white gold is made with zinc or nickel instead of silver. So it’s not always 75% gold and 25% silver.

18ct gold is always 75% gold. The gold content is the same but they might be alloyed with other metals. Palladium is quite usual, more so than zinc or nickel

Anonmousse · 29/07/2023 23:45

It's really not true that platinum is expensive now.

At trade price it's £20/g cheaper than 18ct white gold.

It is however, 40% denser than 18ct gold, so for example a ring that weighed 5g in 18ct would weigh 7g for the identical ring in platinum. But even taking that into account it usually works out cheaper.

At the moment it’s not as expensive as gold, but it’s hardly cheap.

Johnisafckface · 30/07/2023 15:05

Because I’m allergic to all other metals except gold. 😊

Sorry that should have said not expensive when compared to 18ct gold.
Silver is much much cheaper than both (unless you buy from Tiffany where the mark up is insane) but it's not as dense, or hard-wearing and isn't always suitable for the same type of jewellery because it is much softer, and prone to tarnishing.

Medsy · 30/07/2023 15:12

Personally I've just always loved silver best. It's brighter, cheaper and for some reason has a deeper role in our folklore

caringcarer · 30/07/2023 15:19

When I married the first time I had engagement and wedding rings in 18 carat gold. When I remarried I had Platinum because I wanted something different. Now I've gone off the Platinum a bit and have several nice rings in 9 carat gold which is a harder metal than 18 carat gold.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 30/07/2023 15:33

I had a white gold wedding ring for a few years but working in healthcare constant hand washing and alcohol gel totally trashed it. DH has just bought me a tungsten band and a new engagement ring made out of titanium set with diamonds. Hoping they’ll be a bit more robust

AgathaX · 30/07/2023 16:13

Because yellow gold is tacky af

Bit like you then?

But white gold is a mixture of gold and other metals so wouldn't you be allergic to it?

10HailMarys · 30/07/2023 17:42

Gold is less brittle than silver, doesn’t tarnish, and retains its shine for much longer. So for someone who doesn’t like the appearance of yellow gold (I personally loathe yellow gold - it doesn’t go with my skin tone so I’d never wear it) but wants the long-term value and longevity of gold as opposed to silver, white gold is a good option and more affordable than platinum.

Also, just a matter of personal taste, really? Nobody’s forcing anyone to buy it, so if you don’t see the point of it, that’s fine; it’s just not for you.

I know white gold sometimes has to be re-dipped, but I wear two white gold rings and so far haven’t needed to get them done, and I’ve had one of them for over 20 years! So maybe I’ve just been lucky.

itsmyp4rty · 30/07/2023 17:56

I don't like yellow gold very much for rings ok for fine chains though, I have a white gold engagement ring and a rose gold wedding ring. They still look fine after 25 years and if they didn't I wouldn't do anything about it because the pair cost less than £200 and I don't really care how they look. The white gold hasn't yellowed though even though it was cheap as chips.

mildlydispeptic · 29/07/2023 08:41

Cheaper than platinum and sets off diamonds better than yellow gold.

This 💯

Wherearemymarbles · 30/07/2023 18:26

Well for all those saying Platinum is too expensive…
I’ve prices up 2 identical wedding rings in White Gold and Platinum and the White Gold is £40 more…!

Those stating they’re allergic to silver, you most likely have a nickel allergy, so it will be the nickel used in the silver causing your allergy. Nickel is often mixed, even in expensive metals like white gold etc.

I have to be really careful with jewellery as I have a nickel allergy. When I first had my ears pierced they must have used cheap costume studs (early 80’s). Awful itchy, painful lobes, my mum bought me 9ct gold studs afterwards and eventually they healed.

I still wear costume jewellery but religiously make sure I remove it before bed, otherwise I get the telltale itchy rash.

Sorry to derail the thread slightly. 😆

I make precious metal jewellery.

WG is my least favourite metal to work with followed by low carat yellow gold.

Silver sold in the EU and UK from a reputable source will not contain nickel as it has been banned from sale now for many years. If you are buying "silver" jewellery from Etsy then it is more than possible that it contains little or no actual silver whether it's stamped 925 or not. That stamp is meaningless.

If you are interested in why some people here have WG jewellery that needs replating whilst other's don't, this article from the Birmingham Assay Office (which is where I'm registered) goes into some detail on the different colour grades of WG .

Nope. It’s mainly mixed with nickel and I’m not allergic to it. I am of sterling silver which a lot of jewelry is made of. 😊

Ah ok. You said you were allergic to all metals other than gold which is why I was confused. But actually not including nickel
