White gold, what’s the point?

it’s pretty much indistinguishable from steel or silver so why pay for it in jewelry and watches?

Have you ever seen it next to silver? They are not the same colour.

I’m not trying to say that they are identical

It's just personal preference. White gold/silver looks cheap to me whereas yellow gold looks timeless and classic.
People like different things 🤷🏻‍♀️

zozueme · 29/07/2023 09:55

It's a combination of personal preference and fashion. When I got engaged 20 years ago, white gold and platinum were popular and yellow gold seemed old-fashioned. In another 10 years the opposite may well be true. Buy what you love but don't start calling other people's choices tacky 🙄

EbiRaisukaree · 29/07/2023 09:56

I dislike yellow gold, and usually wear silver jewellery for choice, though it’s a pain to keep cleaning it. I chose white gold for my wedding ring, and it’s now 20 years old and has never needed replating. It’s much harder than silver and hasn’t worn in the way higher carat yellow gold does.

It’s all down to taste and preference, really. I think the sort of blingy ultra shiny white metal and diamond rings look tacky, a bit like a bathroom tap, so I don’t wear it. But I wouldn’t judge someone else who did.

blacknredsweeties · 29/07/2023 09:57

Replanting???

My wedding ring is WG. Had it 10 years.

Huromjuicemaker · 29/07/2023 09:59

I get the comments that it’s harder wearing than silver, I hadn’t thought of that.

this debate has come up between DH and I because he’s looking at getting a nice watch for a significant birthday. He thinks yellow gold is too much and wants white, it’s his choice but I am trying to understand it.

Yellow gold is very dated and old fashioned. It's also unfortunately the choice of colour of the stereotypical "chavs" therefore like lots of others have said looks tacky now.
White Gold looks completely different to silver, they're different colours for a start.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 29/07/2023 10:02

I've had white gold for over 40 years, it's 18 carat and doesn't need replating. I like it, it suits my colouring better.

CockSpadget · 29/07/2023 10:03

Another one surprised about the replating. My 20 year old white gold pieces look the same as when they were new?

Redwinestillfine · 29/07/2023 10:03

I don't suit yellow gold. My skin tone is cool. I do wear a lot of silver but my engagement and wedding rings are white gold. Tbh I don't think they had silver versions in the shop. Probably because of the hardness issue.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 29/07/2023 10:06

I've not had my wedding and engagement ring need replating yet and they are 11 and 10 years old respectively. I think some plating techniques must work better than others, as I know other people whose rings have visibly yellowed after four or five years.

I love my white gold. I also have a yellow gold and diamond ring that I have inherited and it doesn't suit my skin tone as well.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/07/2023 10:08

Fuckitydoodah · 29/07/2023 09:10

Yellow gold doesn't suit me, and all my other jewellery is silver. A silver engagement ring and wedding band would tarnish and isn't as hard wearing.

I think it depends on the quality. I've had my engagement ring 14 years and it's only now that it's looking like it could do with replating. Nobody else glancing at it would notice.

I would have liked platinum, but couldn't afford the same ring in platinum at the time.

There must be different qualities of silver, I have silver rings I've worn every day for the last 25 years and they look like new but I have other silver jewellery that hasn't said the test of time so well.

Maybe I have been scarred by growing up in the 70s, but I associate big yellow gold watches with men wearing their shirts half open and medallions. I think they are incredibly tacky and very look-at-how-I-can-afford a-gold-watch. Vulgar. So I’m with your husband on that bit.

Regardless, it’s his choice. Does he tell you what to buy and wear?

KimberleyClark · 29/07/2023 10:11

ThatFraggle · 29/07/2023 09:01

Hmm

Indeed. Yellow gold is not in itself tacky. Unless it’s a huge tacky piece of jewellery.

NortieTortie · 29/07/2023 10:11

My wedding and engagement rings are white gold; I'm allergic to silver. Yellow gold jewellery looks awful on me too.

User98866 · 29/07/2023 10:12

Is platinum way more expensive than gold? I never really understood why you’d get white gold rather than platinum as it doesn’t need re-plating and I thought that platinum was harder wearing? My wedding and engagement rings are platinum. I’ve never had them polished and they don’t shine anymore, maybe gold retains its sheen?

Pure gold is definitely not tacky any more. I’ve always mostly worn silver but have recently got obsessed with gold coloured jewellery. It gives a lovely warmth and makes certain gemstones pop like nothing else. It really depends on the overall look.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2023 09:05

Because it's stronger than silver and doesn't tarnish.

It needs replating which is quite the opposite.

TheWernethWife · 29/07/2023 10:15

I've had my white gold wedding and engagement ring since 2006, they still look brand new.
Wear what you want OP but don't slag off other women's choices.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 29/07/2023 10:15

You have a hard time understanding why your DH likes something different than you?

KimberleyClark · 29/07/2023 10:15

SuperSange · 29/07/2023 09:33

Or Palladium...

Or rhodium.

Summerslimtime · 29/07/2023 10:16

platinum was harder wearing

It's purer so softer.

ZenNudist · 29/07/2023 10:16

My white gold jewellery hasn't needed replating. Some of it is 20 years old.

Silver tarnishes.

Easily cleaned though. Bit of Goddard’s silver polish.

White gold is an alloy with a mix of gold, nickel and zinc and then plated with rhodium - often the plating wears off, it’s not solidly white coloured.

AlanJohnsonsBeamer · 29/07/2023 10:20

Yellow gold washes my fair skin tone out. White gold looks nice on me. I love silver also but they are absolutely not the same.

I do wish I could wear yellow gold as I do think it's pretty on the right person.
