White gold, what’s the point?

it’s pretty much indistinguishable from steel or silver so why pay for it in jewelry and watches?

I have a slim gold wedding ring with diamonds. I love it, although MIL was dismissive and said it was too small, but that’s another story.

It suits my olive skin tone (in my opinion) better than silver, although I do occasionally wear silver jewellery.

tectonicplates · 29/07/2023 14:57

I have a white gold ring. Nobody ever told me it would need replating. How would I know if it needed it? How many years does it last? I’ve never heard of any of this stuff.

nimski · 29/07/2023 15:00

I personally don't like yellow gold. I have White gold rings and they have never needed replating and I've been married 12 years.

My wedding ring is yellow and white gold. The setting on my engagement ringnis white and yellow gold. I've been wearing them, and I don't take them off, for 32 and 33 years respectively. Never have they needed replating.

I can't wear 9ct earrings (allergy), silver are fine.

I am a summer. Yellow gold does nothing for my complexion.

It's surely about preference.

Have you been for one of the House of Colour consultations where you get your colours done? I haven’t, but I’ve seen a few things at Kettlewell and going by the colours I’m drawn to, I think I’m a summer as far as I can tell.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like yellow gold looks better on Springs and Autumns, and white gold/silver looks better on Summers and Winters. When people say they think yellow gold looks tacky, I wonder if they actually mean it doesn’t suit their skin tone, or, more probably, they’ve seen other people wearing it when it doesn’t suit their skin tone, and are associating it with tackiness when actually it just wasn’t the right colour for the wearer.

tallsmallmum · 29/07/2023 15:09

I liked white gold coz I was influenced in real life cringe by a lady who had platinum rings and there was no way I was getting them 🤑 but now I'm not married and I don't care what other people do or think about what I do 🤷🏽‍♀️

Huromjuicemaker · 29/07/2023 15:23

Does it make a difference what item of jewelry we’re talking about? Is a massive yellow gold chain naff? But a white gold one of equivalent size is a bit “under the radar”*
whereas wedding rings are different because they are smaller and everyone assumes they are gold anyway

*We were talking watches and that’s the phrase DH used

I'm allergic to gold. Plus I don't like gold, the colour, gold jewellery. All my 3 rings are platinum, but it was cheaper than today 18 years ago.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/07/2023 15:57

I had House of Colour done in 1990!!! I was told I was a summer. I come out as a summer on Kettlewell. Definitely white gold or silver or platinum are better on me. Also blue and pink pearls or semi precious stones/beads.

I can wear blues, pinks, tears, turquoise, Heathery and some Berry type colours if they have enough blue in them. I need to stay away from yellowy creams, camels, browns, oranges, khaki.

I wear a lot of dark blue and black for work but wear a scarf near my face or a jacket or smart cardigan in a flattering colour.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/07/2023 15:59

@Oblomov23 you probably aren't allergic to gold but to the alloys used in 9ct. 18ct or 22ct would likely be fine. I can't wear 9ct earrings for more than an hour but 18ct are fine. Bit of a price difference though.

SwitchDiver · 29/07/2023 16:30

Not all white gold is gold plate. If it’s 18k it’s 75% solid gold mixed with silver - or if a cheap 18k it’s mixed with zinc or palladium. The lighter the colour of the white gold, the more pure it is (in terms of gold and silver mix).

White gold doesn’t tarnish like silver plate or sterling silver does.

If it’s 18k or above, it is solid and not plated. You should see a stamp on the inside of the ring saying what k it is.

There’s a stamp on the inside, but it’s in such tiny writing that I can’t read what it says 😄

JulesJules · 29/07/2023 16:44

Baffled by all the talk about replating. I've been married nearly 30y, our wedding rings are white gold (was quite unusual then, I think everyone's started copying us 😉) and have never needed replating. Bought from a good jewellers, they never mentioned it either.

At the time they were really expensive, nearly the same as platinum and much more than yellow gold. I just prefer silver coloured jewellery, DH didn't like yellow gold either.

I've never had any allergic reaction to my ring and I'm atopic, tend to react to things, often react to earrings, food, plants etc.

Cheaper than platinum and sets off diamonds better than yellow gold.

This. Yellow gold looks awful on my skin tone

StarchySturgess1 · 29/07/2023 18:04

@SoupDragon that was my point 😂😂

But wouldn’t 18k be more yellow rather than more white so more likely to need plating?
the k is the purity in terms of gold content but it’s the metals mixed with the gold that give the paler colour as the gold is yellow gold.

What, that you were also being sneery and judgemental?

The snobbery on MN towards Pandora is baffling. And no, I don't have any so that's not why I'm saying it.

Yellow gold is very dated and old fashioned. It's also unfortunately the choice of colour of the stereotypical "chavs" therefore like lots of others have said looks tacky now.
White Gold looks completely different to silver, they're different colours for a start.

Are you joking, I work in a high street jewelers and 'stereotypical chavs' if you like, are all about silver!

18k is 75% solid gold. The way you make solid white 18k gold is you melt 75% gold, you melt 25% silver, you mix it while molten, and voila, you have white gold. White gold isn’t meant to and doesn’t look like silver or platinum.

Solid is not the same as plated.

If your “white gold” is bright and white, it is likely plated with rhodium…
