White gold, what’s the point?

it’s pretty much indistinguishable from steel or silver so why pay for it in jewelry and watches?

In your opinion!

Xanadu58 · 29/07/2023 11:02

My engagement ring was white gold but needed replating quite quickly so ended up having the diamond reset into a palladium ring which is what my wedding ring is made of .

You have a hard time understanding why your DH likes something different than you?

Not really, the point of this thread was to canvas opinions and arguments and to see how they compare to mine and DH’s discussion.

Or rhodium.

Personally, I like a nice ring of Plutonium, it keeps your finger nice and warm.

I had a white gold engagement and then wedding ring which drove me mad with the need to re-plating. Is seemed like a complete swiz. I don’t wear them any more and only wear silver jewellery, and usually vintage silver jewellery which is pretty much indestructible and doesn’t tarnish if it’s worn regularly and is easy to clean if not. Gold doesn’t suit my colouring.

Ive been married 15 years never needed to replate yet.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/07/2023 11:20

I always buy white gold earrings as my ears become allergic to anything that's not gold. All other jewellery I wear silver .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/07/2023 11:24

I didn't realise that white gold was plated. I'm currently wearing very small white gold sleepers which I've not removed for about two years and my ears are fine. I can only wear silver for an evening .

bellsbuss · 29/07/2023 11:28

Platinum is cheaper than gold now

I don't understand the attraction of white gold. It's a gold alloy that needs replating regularly. It doesn't look like platinum (which is what it's trying to replicate), it's much yellower.

My wedding ring is white gold. I’ve worn it daily for 25 years and it looks exactly the same as when it was new. I had no idea about the replating thing!

SpringIntoChaos · 29/07/2023 11:44

I can't wear silver as it brings out a severe dermatitis rash in me (I already suffer with dermatitis and silver makes it a whole heap worse!)

White gold is cheaper than platinum and so I chose this 🤷‍♀️ (yellow gold doesn't suit my whiter than ghostlike skin tone!)

KimberleyClark · 29/07/2023 11:53

itwasntmetho · 29/07/2023 10:52

I really like yellow gold.

I'm surprised by those saying it's dated, maybe 20 years ago when every engagement ring was a white gold princess cut diamond and classic gold was out of fashion, but I don't think jewellery that can last a life time needs to follow trends.

Exactly this. I really love vintage/antique jewellery.

Yep, this! Also a ghost.

I've had a white gold ring almost 20 years and it was vintage then. Never been replated also. My newer one also looks to be long lasting.

Sandinyourshoes · 29/07/2023 12:20

I have a platinum wedding ring, its one I bought myself from an antique jewellers years ago, although not that antique according to the hallmark - 1980. This was after years of wearing a Ratners cheapo pale gold one which was a bit small for my finger. I still have the Ratners one but that is tarnished in more ways than one.
I heard or read somewhere platinum is a harder metal than silver, so can have finer designs engraved than silver. Mind you I love silver as well, and silver rings don’t tarnish if they are worn often and washed as you wear them. I don’t like pale yellow gold, maybe due to my Ratners ring, but there are different shades of gold. I also heard that platinum is actually less per ounce than gold - it appears from online bullion sites that gold is twice the price of platinum.
Actually tho I don’t like wearing lots of finger rings, I’ll wear earrings but if silver, they do tarnish. I rub them with kitchen roll to take it off. I would never wear real diamond earrings in case they fell out, not that I have any, but I do have those huge cubic zirconia ones you could get in Next a few years ago.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/07/2023 12:27

My wedding ring is yellow and white gold. The setting on my engagement ringnis white and yellow gold. I've been wearing them, and I don't take them off, for 32 and 33 years respectively. Never have they needed replating.

I can't wear 9ct earrings (allergy), silver are fine.

I am a summer. Yellow gold does nothing for my complexion.

It's surely about preference.

Agree with other posters yellow gold looks chavvy and tacky as hell. 😬

Many years ago walking home from school I found a gold coloured chunky bracelet on the pavement, and showed a friend's mum. She said not to bother taking it to the police station because it was about very cheap looking and clearly only worth a few pounds. We laughed about how yellowey and tacky the fake gold looked. Nevertheless I look it to the police station which was round the corner who logged all the details and said if no-one claimed it after 28 says I could have it. The police also laughed about how tacky and fake it looked.

I was phoned by the bigger town station later that night. It was a 22ct solid gold mens bracelet worth a few hundred pound. Literally a minute before I'd walked into town there had been a smash and grab burglary at a jewellers about 50 yards from where I found it. The thieves had grabbed display trays of gold chains and ran, and this must have fallen off as they ran to their getaway car. The owner of the jewellers brought me a reward round to my house the next day to say thanks for my honesty in handing it in.

So me, my friend, her Mum (pretty well off and could afford nice jewellery) and the 2 police on the desk had all laughed at how cheap, tacky and very fake it looked. It might be because none of us were used to handling 22ct gold, but I've avoided it ever since. If I had to have yellow gold I'd choose 9ct. Silver or white gold all the way for me (mostly silver because of the price!).

I had a platinum ring that was so soft it became misshapen. I chose white gold for my wedding ring for this reason

Platinum is actually less malleable than white gold.

I can definitely distinguish white gold from steel or silver, and I actually quite like seeing yellow gold and white gold together.

I agree. I think yellow gold is now the “classier” option and is more current too. Because white gold/platinum has been ubiquitous for a long time and everyone has it, it no longer has the cachet it once might have done, and it is now the slightly tacky/downmarket one.

WhiskersPete · 29/07/2023 13:07

I'm no jewellery expert and I can easily tell the difference between white gold and silver.

SaleOfTwoTitties · 29/07/2023 13:56

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 29/07/2023 09:22

Surprised by replating white gold comments. I have white gold engagement and wedding ring for over 16 years, never replated and no sign of needing it. They were bought from a manufacturing jewellers

Maybe it is only more obvious if you have allergies, like me. When the plating wears, I start to break out in a rash.

Grapewrath · 29/07/2023 14:02

I love silver and white gold equally, but to me silver has a grey hue and gold looks more white and shiny
Ive worn a white gold nose stud for years and it still looks like new, so not sure about replating

BasiliskStare · 29/07/2023 14:06

@catgirl1976 - I have a yellow gold wedding ring , engagement ring and a watch. INmHO it is not tacky as fuck - I rather like it , but each to their own
A little rude to dismiss others' choices don't you think.

I have been married for the thick end of 30 years & my rings which I have worn every single day give me pleasure. If you are brave enough to show your your rings ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

KajsaKavat · 29/07/2023 14:19

Because gold is so brassy and ugly, it’s still nice to have quality gold rather than steel.

Platinum is cheaper than gold now

I was about to come on and disagree but you're right and it's not by a small margin.

Which is really surprising given that Platinum is one of the rarest metals, occurring at very low concentrations in the Earth's crust. It is 30 times rarer than gold. All the platinum ever produced would only cover your ankles in one Olympic sized swimming pool. All the gold ever produced would fill three Olympic sized swimming pools.

White gold, what’s the point?
