An excerpt…

'It's been hell...'

Really?

No it hasn't.

Dogsitterwoes · 29/07/2023 10:00

I have a relative who'd already bought their retirement home in Europe, and voted for Brexit, and feels very stupid now as they can't live there. They have to fiddle about with the 90 days thing.

Well, duh.

loislovesstewie · 29/07/2023 10:06

I was astonished by so many people, including people in business, who had not realised that exporting anything to the EU would be so difficult post Brexit. They seemed to think that it would just carry on as before, or that suddenly there would be a new market elsewhere which would be so easy to send items to. No thought at all that there would be tons of paperwork to complete etc.
And, that's before we get to people who hadn't considered what would happen to Brits who lived in the EU or holidaying in the EU. I really can't deal with them, I'm afraid.

But I was amused to see that a lot of the hotel staff in a remote and previously very white part of the UK I stayed in recently were African, going by their accents, so there's obviously some drive to replace the lost European workers.

I bet that's exactly what all those who voted leave 'because there's too much immigration these days' wanted and expected to happen. Not.

It will be the same in care homes too I imagine, so maybe the penny will finally drop.....

I posted above, it is already happening.

MiL’s nursing home, nearly 50 Indian staff, selling well in their new country, according to the care home newsletter.

My local LA have just employed 39 African social workers, again settling really well with their families according to LA comms.

Bizarre people’s lack of understanding. I heard people say at the time ‘Brexit will stop all of the freeloading Pakistani families ( who of course already have tight visa/earnings rules) before they can live here. Yet here we are with more Indian and African colleagues than ever.

Or Cameron - whose cowardice and arrogance caused it.

Thing was I don't think the vote was legally enforceable was it ?

Should have needed more than just a straight majority as well , still way too late now innit

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2023 10:31

Brexit will stop all of the freeloading Pakistani families ( who of course already have tight visa/earnings rules) before they can live here

Another reason for a leave vote to be discounted, people from Pakistan are not European, Brexit was not about them. If you couldn't work that out, you weren't qualified to vote.

That's the worst bit about the result being so close. There only needed to be a little bit of critical thinking needed by a minority of the leave voters to make them realise one of:

If we leave the EU, we lose the benefits of being members. That includes our freedom of movement as well as theirs.

Or, it's not going to make all the immigrants disappear, so don't vote on this basis, if that's what you're hoping for.

FrenchandSaunders · 29/07/2023 10:31

There were a lot of lies at the time but you’d have to be monumentally thick to think this wouldn’t affect you living abroad … it’s astounding really and frightening!

KimberleyClark · 29/07/2023 10:33

I also know someone who voted Brexit despite owning a home in Spain they were hoping to retire to!

Hoppinggreen · 29/07/2023 10:34

There was someone being interviewed on TV before the Brexit vote saying he was voting Leave to “stop the Muslims”
Fucking idiot

FrenchandSaunders · 29/07/2023 10:36

I had to sit through a dinner with an acquaintance recently who spent a long time telling fellow diners how shit the country now is …. yep he voted for Brexit.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 29/07/2023 10:49

The day after the Leave vote, my aunt's new next door neighbour danced up to her singing:

'Brexit, we're gonna have Brexit, all the immigrants are gonna go home, all the Indians (etc) are going home'.

He had assumed that because they were both white English pensioners she had also voted for Brexit.

He hadn't lived next door to my aunt for very long, though, otherwise he might have known that her late husband was Indian.

She hasn't spoken to him since.

I'm sure there are many similar stories.

topnoddy · 29/07/2023 10:56

It's just the Brits who are thick racists though is it .

Just look at all those pillocks who voted from Trump , and will do again given the chance .

BeginningToLookALotLike · 29/07/2023 11:00

I do know people who aren't racist and voted Leave for other reasons.

But people like my aunt's neighbour will never regret voting Leave, even though Brexit is now directly affecting him.

Hoppinggreen · 29/07/2023 11:03

Brexit actually benefitted us financially at the time and hasn’t really had any direct negative effects for us personally but I still bloody hate it

FrenchandSaunders · 29/07/2023 11:04

I’m still stunned that the vast majority of people I know voted leave.

ErmWhatever · 29/07/2023 11:12

ButterCrackers · 29/07/2023 11:21

He got what he voted for so he should be happy.

My mother and sister voted for brexit for this exact reason! When I pointed out that 'the Muslims' were predominantly 'coming in' from non EU countries and voting out would make no difference I was accused of being a terrorist supporter. When I shared an article that supported what I was saying, they actually reported me to the police for being a terrorist supporter. Not spoken to either of them since. 🤦‍♀️

AgentProvocateur · 29/07/2023 11:28

Thick as pigshit.

SerendipityJane · 29/07/2023 12:47

It was well publicised that there was a lot of support for Brexit from the UKs Indian and Pakistani communities. They deduced - quite correctly - that if the UK shut the door on visa-free EU workers, it would mean more visas for Indian workers - and their families.

Currently our current Prime Minister has to work out how to accede to Indias demands for unlimited visas without anyone noticing. When I asked ChatGPT how he might achieve such a feat, the answer was to "ensure there is another story in the press. Ideally about Nigel Farage"

WeetabixTowels · 29/07/2023 12:47

Lol

PassTheSnacks · 29/07/2023 13:17

They should have ripped up the votes of anyone unable to explain what a third country is and the implications of being one.

Indeed. For any vote (and indeed jury service) IMO people should need to be able to pass a basic test in logical reasoning and on the basics of economics and how the political system works. With rights come the responsibility to inform ourselves and make informed decisions. Abdicatiin of the second part is the reason why our democracy is non-functional. And the idea of having your fate decided by 12 random members of the UK public - needing to trust in their ability to weigh up evidence and make a rational, logical and unprejudiced/ unemotional judgement - is frankly terrifying.

PassTheSnacks · 29/07/2023 13:22

I do know people who aren't racist and voted Leave for other reasons.

Such as?!

Still waiting to hear a single valud one that stands up to scrutiny and would outweigh the extremely numerous and well-documented downsides and impoverishment.

GoodChat · 28/07/2023 19:24

"I thought we could keep the Europeans out and still be able to do whatever I wanted in their country"

Exactly.

These idiots should pipe down - to misuse a common phrase: "you voted for it, get over it".

Kendodd · 29/07/2023 13:47

One thing that always strikes me about stories like this, is that the Leave voting moron at the heart of the story always seem to blame the other country for the problem. It this case its 'Italian bureaucracy putting them through hell'. The liars, racists and grifters, Johnson, Farage etc, who they were stupid enough to believe, never get a word of criticism and I wouldn't be surprised at all, if given the chance, this bloke would vote Leave again, swallowing the exact same lies, told by the exact same people.

That's one of the worse things about Brexit imo, the liars and racists who sold it are never going to be held to account. They'll just point at the EU and blame them for imposing the rules on us that we asked them to.
