a very wealthy acquaintance fiercely supported Brexit til she met a new partner on line who lives in France.

she has now moved to a chateau in France as she can afford the visa / income / health requirements for. French Visa and posts regularly how fabulous life is there with roads, health system, food etc etc much better than the UK.

I will ask her 1 day about the hypocrisy!

I don’t think it’s unreasonable of Italy to have minimum income requirements if people from a different country want to live there. All countries should have the freedom to do that, EU citizens or not. These people simply don’t meet the visa requirements but it sounds like they might when she gets her pension in 2 years. This isn’t technically a brexit issue, it’s more of an issue with these particular people not researching Italy’s requirements before buying property there. It’s a stupid people news story rather than a brexit one.

Of course it’s a Brexit story as well. The article refers to it because quite simply there wouldn’t have been an issue in we were still in the EU.

Wish we had the same rules here for EU people..

We do.
Why do you think we have lost so many EU staff from the NHS and from care homes?
Did you not hear that crops are rotting in the fields because there is nobody to harvest them?
We gave lost so much due to sheer ignorance and stupidity.

i don’t think history is going to be kind to Rees-Mogg, Johnson and Farage - they’re all twats that the Brexit voters blindly followed like sheep and lapped up the crap they spewed

Or Cameron - whose cowardice and arrogance caused it.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2023 07:21

I do try to focus my ire on the liars, rather than the people who were lied to. But it's sometimes hard, when I remember the "We won, you lost, get over it" mentality that prevailed among many leavers.

LlynTegid · 29/07/2023 07:22

I wouldn't struggle to work up any sympathy. I just have none.

how can you not know the rules for EU citizens coming to the UK?

why do you not want EU workers?

Brexit has damaged the UK. The people who led the campaign had done a huge disservice to the country. It’s as if they were working for a foreign government. I think they, the ring leaders, should be held to account. Frankly they should be tried in court for Treason.

And its architect Farage is trying to distance himself now that Brexit has created more poverty and illegal immigration has shot up. Ex banker Farage has found a new publicity campaign, to bring down the UK banking system and further push us towards developing nation status. The same folk who voted Brexit will back him on this.

They could do, if they went through the necessary processes, and took out health insurance. Look, people were lied to, were deceived. It's a bit graceless to gloat so.

Leavers were lied to, but the truth was readily available and they chose to ignore it - and in fact mocked the people who tried to tell them the truth. Not exactly helpless victims of a complex fraud.

Twyford · 29/07/2023 07:41

“We were told Brexit was not going to impact our life abroad, that it would be just a matter of formality,”

They were bloody told that was all total crap, of course it would impact Brits' life in Europe. But they and their mates said it was all "Project Fear".

The same place as all the Tories have disappeared to lately. I haven’t seen Clav for weeks.

She's busy defending that pillock Dan Wootton.

LakieLady · 29/07/2023 07:57

Of course trade would be impacted. Especially the disaster in NI. That was 100% obvious and widely written about bit people decided all that was worth it. I hope it was not purely because they are xenophobic twats, but that is much how it looks.

My MIL voted for Brexit. A few days after the result, when I expressed concerns with regard to wtf would happen in NI, I had to explain to her how not being in the EU jeopardised the Belfast agreement and therefore (potentially) peace in NI.

Her response was just "I didn't know that". I took all my willpower not to say "Well, you should have fucking educated yourself then". She's an intelligent, well-educated woman, votes Labour, not a racist, but still she didn't bother to find out the half of it before voting. She regrets it now.

She also said that the main reason for voting to leave was because she didn't think the Germans should be telling us what to do, considering that they lost the war and we won. (Shakes head in despair.)

PriamFarrl · 29/07/2023 08:12

Does anyone else remember the TV series 7 Up? It followed the lives of a selection of children aged 7. Then they came and spoke to them again at 14, again at 21 and so on.

About 10 years ago they did one again when the people were in their 60s. One of the people was a London cabbie. He complained about all the foreigner moving into London, how they didn’t learn English or try to integrate, how they had their own shops and cafes selling their own food.

Then, without a hint of irony he talked about how he had moved to Spain. They then showed him buying his PG Tips in Tesco and eating a full English in an English pub. He honestly couldn’t see it.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2023 08:20

In the run up to the referendum BBC Breakfast News did a piece featuring a group of British pensioners living on the Costa del Sol.

Every single one of them stated an intention to vote leave 'because there was too much immigration these days'.

I don't know how the reporter kept a straight face while they asked their follow up question about how they'd cope with the inevitable changes and restrictions if Britain did actually leave the EU. They didn't really seem to have an answer or any awareness that things might change to their disadvantage. You couldn't make it up. Angry

They've actually bought the place recently. So even more dim than being lied to and not realising what you were really voting for.

Could be why it was so cheap.

Strange photo, no sad faces.

Thing is they will actually be able to get visas to live in Italy, they just have to wait 2 years for the wife to get her pension first so they meet the income requirements (he already gets his). How many people won’t even have that option thanks to people like him?

That's if Italy - as a sovereign nation - doesn't change the rules. Not an impossibility given their exposure to refugees and asylum seekers (which dwarves the UKs, by the way). In 2 years time they may double the income requirements. Or waiting time. Or add a charge. It's quite incredible what Italy can do now it's left the EU, isn't it ?

I'm not convinced they weren't. Boris Johnson deliberately slipping his security detail to meet with a known Russian KGB agent might just be a clue.

I wonder what Nigel Farage is up to now. He's got another hobby horse that will end up being disastrous for the UK. These people are dangerous and entirely self interested.

FIL lives in Spain. Voted for Brexit coz 'immigrants in my country'. No words.

Yep! The words of mine too…and ‘taking our jobs’ when he worked in Europe for years. 😳

Hospital waiting lists here because they are full of ‘foreigners’ who don't pay yet he received major stroke care in Germany and a major heart op in Spain.

When I wanted to drop a little comment in to watch the ripple effect, I would say ‘ and of course, you as immigrants, in Spain’ 🤣. Of course, they don't think it applies to them!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 29/07/2023 09:55

I genuinely don't understand why my post was deleted. Was it because I called this couple "stupid fuckwits"? And yet the comments on the same page calling them "thick wankers" or similar was allowed to stand...

@MNHQ Please could you clarify which of the talk guidelines I have broken? My post was not a personal attack on anyone here, and I can't see which of the other guidelines would apply?

Also, please note that the message that you use when you cancel people states that there is a link to the talk guidelines but it doesn't actually work.
