Whether you voted brexit or remain, we r all united in wanting better jobs, communities and living conditions for us and our families. We all want improved access to education. We all want better healthcare. Let's focus on what unites us. Not on insulting and putting down each other

But we don't all want these things, many Brexitiers are well off/toward the end of their lives.... they don't care about other people, let alone equalities in society or the NHS, you trusted Bojo on the NHS ? or Farage on democracy? in earlier years, a self confessed fascist - You thought he'd changed

Brexit was always going to a be gamble, a wish list of could be's maybe's & heavily supported by Putin, Trump..

Brexit was supposed to be about Democracy but here you are saying we can have another vote in 20 years time, 27yrs after the first, hardly Democratic.

Blossomtoes · 01/08/2023 14:30

I haven’t got another 20 years to wait to vote. I very much doubt younger people will be content to sit on their hands for that long either.

HaveToHideAsAnon · 01/08/2023 14:19

Ok, so let's assume you are right. Let's assume for the sake of argument, that I voted brexit because I'm a thick, ignorant, uneducated racist.

What do you mean by that?

I guess you might mean that I'm not smart, or at least not as smart as you. That I haven't had access to the same educational opportunities. Perhaps you mean I didn't understand the full social and economic impact of brexit in the same way a civil servant, researcher or economist might have.

Perhaps you mean that I saw immigration not as the great asset to social and economic growth that you saw it as, but I instead saw it as a threat to me, my community, my family and my job and consequently my ability to put food on the table for my children.

And perhaps as a result of all the above, although I was sceptical, I was more desperate and wanted more to believe the lies spun to me about how brexit might improve my situation, improve the NHS, give some.money back to the country.

What then can you do about all this? If I was you, I'd use those big brains of yours to conduct research, influence policy makers, influence schools and the education system to improve the massive socio-economic inequalities which exist in the UK today. Perhaps you might want to spend time finding ways to ensure schools teach kids about brexit and its impact, the benefits of EU membership. Perhaps you might want to involve yourself in setting up community groups which enhance inclusion and the value of diversity. Perhaps you might contribute to ways that young people can feel empowered in society today, can understand politics and economics, can feel skilled enough to find jobs.

There may be another vote in 20 years time. Remainers can spend the next 20 years saying "you brexit voters are all so thick and stupid and ignorant and racist". Or you can spend that time addressing some of the huge social inequalities in the UK today which may well have contributed to the different ways people voted.

Me and you both, i m gutted Starmer has ruled out SM and CU membership, so at least another 5 years before thats on the agenda, then another 5 years to settle/be agreed, then another 5 years for a vote.... yep 20 is about it.

I think this is quite wise of Starmer.
Leave voters are never going to change their minds regardless of how much damage Brexit does. They were weighted towards the older end of society though so we just have to wait until enough of them have died off before the damage can be addressed.
And please don't twist this to mean I'm wishing people dead.

Well brexit it is here. You can either wish it wasn't and degrade and insult those that voted for it. Or you can try and make the most of it, and in the time you have remaining, you can work to make changes for future generations

And if all this is the case, why on earth would you vote for it again?

I'm not stating my reasons here because I am fairly certain they will be met with hostility and cries of "see you are thick and ignorant" etc.. It has happened to me before and I don't feel like hearing it all again this week. It doesn't help anyone.

However, if you genuinely want to know, because you want things to change, you want to make things better for the future, then I'd be happy to take part in a focus group, complete an anonymous questionnaire etc ... where I wouldn't feel judged or insulted, and where people would listen because they genuinely wanted to know and hear why people voted differently to how they would have liked. So maybe some of those hurling insults could instead use their passion to get active, do some proper research, start gathering information and then making positive changes.

Yes this is what my partner says but i think he should lead and make the case for SM and or CU, personally, i'd suggest EFTA, sighting Norway as an example and reminding people that it was the UK that helped form EFTA.

I think it could gain support but equally, the Tories would do all they could to portray Lab as overturning democracy and backing the EU by the back door.... making the GE a Brexit one again.

I believe he will soften his stance IF he gets elected.

You seem to think you re getting these anyway....

Why even bother posting on this thread? seems all a bit confusing tbh.

I guess it's because I'm thick and ignorant. If only someone had told me that before! Having it pointed out time and time again is so very helpful and absolutely would make me want to change my vote.. 🤔🙄

Where did I say I was an expert? Stop putting words in other people's mouths.

Doing nothing of the sort. Trace back through the quotes or do you just pull out occasional sentences, ignore the topic and get indignant ?

Yes - calling people thick is a great technique to get them to change their minds. Rejoining the EU is impossible right now. Closer links aren't. Even that requires broad support.

Broad support? 52% should do it

To anyone who voted Leave because of their xenophobic beliefs I say: How's that working out for you?😆😆😆

we r all united in wanting better jobs, communities and living conditions for us and our families. We all want improved access to education. We all want better health care.

You don't. You'd vote Brexit again despite living with damage it has done to the country, particularly our health and social care services. All someone has to do is push your button and you won't give a fuck about any of the above, all that will matter is satisfying whatever base emotion was at the root of your vote. The bit of you that you hide from your friends. The bit Vote Leave manipulated to make you vote against your best interests as well as those of your family, community and country.

Stop wallowing in a false sense of victimhood and take responsibility for your actions. Only then can you learn from your mistakes instead of repeating them @HaveToHideAsAnon.

HaveToHideAsAnon · 01/08/2023 16:25

No victim here. I'm happy the democratic process has been served and believe we should get on with implementing what has been voted for. I would prefer we had a less incompetent government trying to manage it all, and will again cast my vote in the next general election to try to change that.

I think it quite arrogant to tell people they have made a mistake that they need to learn from. I haven't made a mistake. I voted as I wanted to.

BritinEU · 01/08/2023 16:26

Opinion polls such did a great job in predicting the outcome last time, you want to do use them again.

You quote a rejoin poll.

Does it address the conditions of a real rejoin i.e. the UK, as a new member must give up the pound ? Furthermore, we wouldn't get the other parts of the special deal we had. We'd also likely be rejoining a far more federal EU than the one we left.

52% support for all that ? Or is the number you quote nothing to do with the reality of rejoining ?

Many Brexiters lived on hot air, hope and a refusal to see the problems that were obvious to the rest of us. Looks like a lot of rejoiners are doing likewise.
