People who voted in a free vote should not be the target of everyone's venom. That should be David Cameron, who's idea it was to give us all the vote in the first place. You can't expect the average person to know all the fine details, to have read every economic paper, to have predicted the future (COVID, Truss, Sunak). Some people vote based on their hearts, on their political leanings, on what they are sold. Others vote based on individual circumstances and family circumstance, some vote based on doing some reading (but it's not going to be the level that our policy makers and civil servants are pivvy too), some (in the case of brexit) voted on principals of democracy, some vote to feel heard, I could go on

David Cameron? oh yes!

But having "won" a non binding referendum, Brexitiers have made sure the subject cannot be revisited... strange as one argument to quit was for more democracy.....
The next EU vote, if there even is one, will be in in 20 or 30 years time.

Because of people like you, the younger generation have lost so much but do you care? nope, you'd do it all over again.

What really astonishes me @HaveToHideAsAnonis your assertion you'd vote Brexit again.

Surely - as a forum of parents - we all just heard that as a little child having a hissy fit and tying their lunch into a handkerchief to a stick to carry on their shoulder as the "leave home and are never coming back" ?

Kendodd · 01/08/2023 08:58

@HaveToHideAsAnon
If you want an agreeable audience for your well informed opinions on Brexit, just join Britain First or EDL, they all love Brexit and can back slap you for your intellect being more clever than all those experts.

ilovesooty · 01/08/2023 09:04

@HaveToHideAsAnon I'm not really interested in entrenched Leavers like you "changing". You've done your damage. I'd just like to know why and what the benefits are.

No thanks. I would never join or be part of a racist organisation, it's not what I stand for. You are welcome to join if this is your leaning though , I'm sure.

I haven't done any damage. I cast me free vote, and would do so again. You are also free to vote as you chose. I respect your views, it's a shame respect only goes one way as far as brexit is concerned

I’d have much more respect if you could or would try to explain why Brexit benefits us and why the UK’s so much better off outside the EU.

We're all free to vote as we choose. People voting leave (cumulatively) irredeemably fucked this country. You had your part in the damage caused, for sure.

You have taken rights and opportunities away from my children and thrown a spanner into the delicate peace in NI to name just two things. Are you really so blinded by the cult of Brexit that you can't even see the most obvious?

Kendodd · 01/08/2023 09:38

Oh, and you haven't said how you feel about your own side calling you thick?
I have never had an answer from Leave voters on this. They get hugely offended and angry about Remainers calling them thick, when they leaders of the Leave campaign call them thick though - silence.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2023 09:49

Exactly @Kendodd, the Leave campaign knew that a good proportion of typical voters don't understand the issues caused by the UK leaving the EU, which @HaveToHideAsAnon happily admits, so all it took was to make a few claims about the supposed benefits, which many wouldn't have put into any thought into whether or not these were actually true or achievable.

Then add in the unashamed racists and xenophobes who thought they were voting to rid the UK of anyone who isn't white and/or has a first language other than English, neither of which was ever going to happen and here we are.

Infuriating.

You voted for damage. Damage has occurred. What is there to respect about that? Or are you really saying Brexit hasn't been damaging? Or that is has, but you had no way of foreseeing that it would be? In which case why say you'd vote for damage again?

You're determined to cast off responsibility for the consequence of your vote. But what we vote for always has a consequence. It's like you think you can separate your right to put a cross in that box from what happens as a result of it. Leave votes struck the match, you can't walk away from the fire and say what it burns isn't anything to do with you.

GasPanic · 01/08/2023 10:27

HaveToHideAsAnon · 01/08/2023 08:31

I absolutely never said "I could tell you the benefits of brexit but you r too stupid to understand". I would never say that, because while some remainers like to call brexiteers stupid, I would never cast the same cruel insult. It isn't true anyway. Most people on both sides are more than capable of understanding the reasons and arguments, and even they are not, this is a free country where everyone is allowed to vote and we should all be valued and allowed to express our opinions.

The reason I'm not getting into debate here, is because I've done that before quite a few times, and it never ends well for me. To be fair, anything anyone who voted brexit ever says never seems to end well for them. Too many people ploughing in to rip them apart.

One person's reasons for voting one way, are not better than another person's reasons for voting another way. The one sure fire way to keep people firmly in their position is to insult them and stamp them down. Want people to change? Be respectful to them, listen to them, help them feel heard, show them how they could benefit from things being different. Don't insult people. We know that battering people into submission never works.

Maybe I'd change my mind if there was a space to openly discuss my views where I would feel valued and respected as an equal, not considered pathetic, stupid, and ignorant.

Your stupidity is actually coming on this thread and expecting some sort of reasoned debate.

She wasn't expecting reasoned debate; she hasn't offered any reasons. That would be the crucial starting point.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/08/2023 10:30

It takes two sides to have a 'reasoned debate'. As yet, @HaveToHideAsAnon hasn't given her reasons for voting to leave the EU.

Not possible to have a reasoned debate if your first line is "I'm not going to discuss my reasons or the benefits of Brexit...."

You were cruel enough to cast a vote that you knew would lose people their jobs and homes. That would decimate our NHS and social care system. That would fuck our economy and make the UK less investable. That would end FOM for our citizens and their children.

You are free to express your opinions, you are the one who chooses not to, because you are ashamed of them. Your last paragraph is just mind-blowing. You are actually living with the fucked up consequences of Brexit, but you would vote for this all over again?Shock Unless maybe people would #BeKind to you?

Your vote cost me my job and seriously damaged my country. You hide who you are. Why should I value and respect you?Hmm

No I haven't. I never asked for a vote on this. It was given to me by a government I didn't vote for. Direct your anger at Cameron and the conservatives who started it, and the bunch of incompetent conservatives who have made a hash up of implementing it.

People vote conservative when they know that will cost people their house and home, and when they know it will acre up the NHS. But that's their right. I don't agree with their choice to vote conservative, but I respect they have a different opinion and didn't vote them intentionally so someone could lose their job and home. I don't see why people can respect the opinion of those that voted brexit. Im not the only one who voted brexit. I am not ignorant, racist or stupid for doing som I voted brexit for many reasons and thats ok. You didn't vote brexit for many reasons and that's ok to. You cannot blame me for your losses. I feel deeply sorry for you if these horrible things have happened. The conservatives cost my brother his mental health and home, but I don't blame conservator voter's for that

I think a great many things have screwed up the country. It's easy to sit back and say "well ha ha, I was right, you are all thick, what idiots you are". But that doesn't help anyone. It makes things a hec of a lot worse.
