Brexit happened because of Tory insecurity, incompetence and arrogance. Racists, thickos and people who hate the UK voted for it.

Fully supported by Labour!

Fully supported by Labour!

The Baaa baaa baaa Labour is tired and tedious now. It was not fully supported by any party except UKIP.

Luckydip1 · 30/07/2023 10:29

Not supported by the Tory PM!

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2023 10:32

Instigated by the Tory PM of the day and championed by the man who until a year ago was the Tory PM.

For all of UKIP's bellyaching at the time, it was the Tories wot done it because David Cameron was so insecure and so stupid.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2023 10:37

And because Johnson was so power hungry and egotistical.

Luckydip1 · 30/07/2023 10:47

Labour still thinks it's a great idea:

Setting out Britain's relationship with Europe under a Labour government, Starmer says: “With Labour, Britain will not go back into the EU. We will not be joining the single market. We will not be joining a customs union.” He will add: “We will not return to freedom of movement to create short term fixes

countrygirl99 · 30/07/2023 10:49

There's no point at the moment in planning yo return because there us no way it can happen for a decade or so. No point getting people's hopes up.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2023 11:04

You know for the party of personal responsibility, the Tories have a very lax attitude towards taking responsibility for the fucking huge damage they've done to the country in the 13 years they've been in power.

Are they planning to use Shaggy's It Wasn't Me as their next election anthem?🤭

CHIRIBAYA · 30/07/2023 11:06

The Italians have dodged a bullet (or two)...

Rejoining the EU is not in any political paty's gift. We left. You won. Take responsibility for your own voting choices @Luckydip1.

I was astonished by so many people, including people in business, who had not realised that exporting anything to the EU would be so difficult post Brexit. They seemed to think that it would just carry on as before, or that suddenly there would be a new market elsewhere which would be so easy to send items to. No thought at all that there would be tons of paperwork to complete etc.
And, that's before we get to people who hadn't considered what would happen to Brits who lived in the EU or holidaying in the EU. I really can't deal with them, I'm afraid.

I remember reading in one of the papers at the time about how by leaving the EU, it would open us up to so many worldwide deals that would now be available now we weren't "tied" to the EU.

Try applying a few critical thinking skills. It will help you understand what's going on.

Labour agree with brexit - one reason to not support them.

The Labour Party don't (in general) support Brexit. They're just scared that if they say so openly and clearly they will lose working class voters, so they obfuscate. Same as they obfuscate on the NHS, on strike action in general and on trans rights, with the end effect that they appear not to have any policies at all.

I really hope it works as this country is decimated enough by Brexit and everything else the tories have done over the last 13 years but it makes it hard to wholeheartedly support them.

SavvyMaria · 30/07/2023 11:53

This is the level of stupidity that we're dealing with. Unbelievably frustrating. I reckon 20 years and we'll be back in.

I voted for Brexit ‘I voted for Brexit and was told it wouldn’t affect expats – now I can’t live in my £13,000 Italian house’
Luckydip1 · 30/07/2023 11:54

Ultimately it was the Labour and Tory voters that caused Brexit not one of the parties, they and only they are responsible for the mess we are in whether it was due to racism or just being too gullible.

Ultimately it was the PM Cameron's Tory party that caused Brexit. We never needed a referendum on it in the first place. He promised it to get Tory votes.

That’s pragmatism, not endorsement.

Luckydip1 · 30/07/2023 12:01

@TooBigForMyBoots he could see the country was divided and so gave the people the vote so they could decide, a very democratic thing to do. David Cameron pleaded with voters to vote remain. Corbyn didn't have a view either way so just sat on the fence! Corbyn subsequently pushed for the implementation of Article 50 to make it happen.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/07/2023 12:02

The country wasn't divided. The Tory party was divided.

Luckydip1 · 30/07/2023 12:04

The country was divided as the outcome of the vote shows.

bellac11 · 30/07/2023 12:04

Im a lifelong labour voter. I felt let down by them.

Pre referendum all the main parties were remain, the government of the day was remain

But once the result came in, Labour advocated for the government at thetime to progress and set out what the tories were going to do, to enact the result. They had every opportunity to say 'hold on a minute, this isnt legally binding, this will cause huge economic and social harm to the UK'. They jumped on a bandwagon and like anther poster said, didnt want to lose working class votes in the north (which they ended up losing anyway). They didnt act with the best interests of the public at heart

Corbyn was a leaver, he couldnt hide that.

Ultimately, the tories allowed themselves to be taken over by the ERG and enact a worse outcome than we could have had, we could have remained in the single market etc. They have been neglgent of the UKs interests.

Ultimately though the general public bear the blame, they got what they voted for, a much poorer and weaker UK. Well done them.

Pre referendum the country was not divided on the issue of the EU. Surveys of the day show that it featured very low on people's priorities or focus.

This was about the tory party, not the UK
