For me it’s BBC’s 1995 Pride and Prejudice. Absolute perfection, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Seinfeld:

  • All characters are deeply flawed and somewhat despicable, which makes the series scrutiny-proof, contrary to Friends. Been offensive has always been part of the series' DNA.
  • They manage to have a recurring character who dies and still, it's hilarious. It's genius.
  • It's a series about nothing, which makes it very relatable. It's nothing more than a caricature of a daily, normal, boring life. We all had a bad hairdresser we didn't want to see at the salon, or a friend that we wanted to "break up with" or the ick because a date said "lol" in a text etc...
  • Personally, it made me funnier. It actually shaped my own humour.

Another perfect series for me is the Royale Family. The fact that the camera moves around the living room makes it intimate. As a spectator you're part of the family. It's incredibely funny, but there's no contempt for this family, just sweet fondness.

And then Bojack Horseman. It's funny on so so many levels, but also so deep and sometimes devastating. The episode in the sea is a masterpiece.

And then the usual The Wire and The Sopranos. It's at the same level of an award winning film.

Yes yes to Bojack Horseman.

Has a slow start but when it hits its stride, wow.

Breaking Bad.

If you consider A-Level literature exams...."Was Macbeth a villain or a tragic figure led astray by his villainous wife?" and "In Lord of the flies explain the dependent relationship between..." you could so easily set similar questions over the relationships between Jesse and Walter, or Walter and Skyler. Eg "At what point do Walter's crimes switch from being a necessary evil being evil by choice?". I think drawing a comparison between Breaking Bad and oldy worldy literature would make them so much more relevant to modern day students. There is just so much to pick apart in BB. It's fascinating. Every time I watch it I discover a tiny different facet of a relationship and another penny drops. Just love it.

This is so true, I found it a tough watch and no desire to rewatch but it deeply affected me with questions like this! Amazing.

agree with many of these especially Detectorists.

From other threads like this in the past I’ve discovered so many old series like Cranford, Upstairs downstairs etc that I would have been too young for first time round.

I’ll also add
Weeds - great story telling
Never have I Ever - just so funny and sweet and charming
Sex education - the first series

I hated Fleabag! Can’t bear PWB

Not in any order:

Brideshead Revisited
The Jewel in the Crown
Happy Valley
Poirot
Miss Marple (Joan Hickson version)
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Granada, Jeremy Brett)
Pride and Prejudice
Elizabeth R

Those are dramas - but there are loads of documentaries, too. Mainly from the past since I find docs very dumbed-down now, a bit like kids' TV!

Simonjt · 06/08/2023 10:26

I can now add Heartstopper season 2 to my list.

DungareesAndTrombones · 06/08/2023 10:48

Dinnerladies. I absolutely love it and watch it every single time it is on. The writing is amazing and it makes my heart happy.

The Village (Maxine Peake - I've watched season 1 only. It's too perfect and I'm not jeopardising it to watch s2)
