Sick of being lectured about the climate crisis

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:12

I try my best to leave as little carbon footprint as possible.
Married with no kids and annual dual fuel bills are under£700
1 small car, holiday overseas once every 5 years.
So why do those wealthy families with 3,4, 5 plus kids who drive SUV tanks and holiday every year multiple times.,who consume £300 plus in energy bills monthly, have the audacity and blatant cheek to lecture others on the climate crisis.

It's like they have only just twigged their excessive greed and consumption just might now mean your kids futures are ruined.
It's making me so angry.

Ignore them. Do you're best and ignore everyone else šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

liondreams · 28/07/2023 13:21

who are these wealthy families lecturing you OP?

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:26

I've seen so many posts on here the last few days, on the TV and bloody Jeremy Vine.

Talking about what you're doing is important- but that doesn't mean unwelcome hectoring!

What sorts of things do they say to you? Can you use that as a way to ask them what changes they're making?

Or if you're feeling more combative, move the conversation to how we need not just fewer, but also smaller and lighter cars on the roads, and how the rise of the SYV has been one of the most disastrously counterproductive things that society has allowed to happen (right up there with aircon and putting plastic flooring in gardens)

People who are posting on MN are publishing their views generally. Not haranguing you specifically. Ditto telly programmes.

Is this actually happening to you, directly, in RL?

It's easy to avoid this stuff. If you want to.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/07/2023 13:33

I doubt you are being "lectured" OP. Give the Climate Change threads a swerve if you don't like what poster write. The won't follow you. It isn't personal.

MrsStrangeViews · 28/07/2023 13:34

People with kids (!) should not and have no place on lecturing about climate change.
They are the worst criminal themselves.

NadjaCravensworth1 · 28/07/2023 13:35

You're angry with the wrong people

Criminals for having children?

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:35

Yes I've got colleagues who are suddenly getting their knickers in a twist about it, while simultaneously sharing their 4th holiday pics on Facebook. The hypocrisy is unbelievable.
Usually it doesn't get to me but today Ive snapped(not yet farted).

I don't understand how your dual fuel is £700 a YEAR Confused

Our 2 bedroom flat is £430 a MONTH - it's mostly electricity, we hardly ever have the heating on

Flibbertigibbettytoes · 28/07/2023 13:37

Everyone should be doing everything possible to stop climate change including communicating the risks to others. Interpreting that as 'lecturing' sounds childish and defensive. It's not about you as an individual, it's the future.

usernother · 28/07/2023 13:37

I don't read any of it anymore and I turn over the TV. Bored with it now.

JustMaggie · 28/07/2023 13:38

I doubt it's anything personal. You're doing your best to help the climate and that's what matters.

Ā£430 a month?!

Clarabe1 · 28/07/2023 13:39

Bloody David Attenborough winds me up. Who has got a bigger carbon footprint than him? He has been everywhere and seen everything but lectures the general public about climate change?? Leonardo DiCaprio- another fucking hypocrite. The poorest people have the smallest carbon footprint.

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:39

@LaurieFairyCake my fix comes to an end in Sep. Currently pay£55 a month. Two bed flat also.

I kinda know what you mean OP, all of my most greeny friends are the ones who've travelled the most. I've not been half the places they have! But I just try and ignore. I already don't have kids or a car but I feel like I should be allowed a holiday abroad occasionally.

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:47

Thanks for letting me vent. But no I won't become bloody vegan and I'm not riding a bike to work.
@Flibbertigibbettytoes to be brutally honest I quite frankly don't give a toss about my kids future as I chose not to have any. One less worry for me.

Huh?? Our 2 bedroom house is only £120 a month for gas and electric. We take weekly meter readings and we're always in a lot of credit.

Houseoftulip · 28/07/2023 13:53

Very valid point! Never thought of it like that

Flickersy · 28/07/2023 13:54

So when you say you're sick of being "lectured", what you really mean is you're sick of clicking on things you don't want to look at.

There's an easy solution to that OP.

Ours is similar in a small three bed terrace. We lucked out and fixed at a pretty low price for a few years before the prices rose, plus we don't use much.

I don't know how £430 a month is possible! I also live in a 2 bed flat, all electric. My bill is £150pm.
