To insist my husband not buy this desk?

We bought a home. One of the rooms is very small and we agreed it would be a place for my husband to work as well as a room for guests, most notably my oldest daughter from a previous marriage who's 20 years old. Then someone my husband knows bought an expensive, massive desk he says he's going to get. There isn't even room for a sofa if he gets this desk. Also, it costs 30% of the whole budget for furniture for the new home. He suggested my 20 year old could sleep with her 10 year old sister when she visits. Or we could get a sofa bed downstairs. I never would have picked this house if I knew there wouldn't be a room for her to have privacy from her much younger brothers and sister.

Ignore my horrid spelling 😂😂 it’s what I get for trying to multitask.

@Mastmw7g He has a desk already, one his company paid for

Could he ask his work to pay for a new desk / contribute? Getting the desk for cheaper might soften the blow for you! I agree with others, the one he has is far too small, especially given he spends his work time and his hobby time at it. What other alternatives do u have for your daughter?

@Iknowthis1 That is a picture of the desk he wants. This the current desk he has.

That desk doesn’t look big enough to actually work from though, to me. It’s just a computer desk really. I can see why he’d need more space if frequently working from home.

Op his desk is a child’s. Mine is twice the size for two monitors, plus all the additional- paper, monitors, files etc that I use at the same time.
However that’s a stupid amount to pay for a desk. How come he gets all the day?? It’s your home to and your money as well I assume??

@Flisss We live close to his work, so he had said he would go into the office when we had guests, so he wouldn't have to socialize. He plays games on his computer, too, and watches a lot of videos, and I wasn't sure how he was going to handle having less time for that. My desk and computer will be in our bedroom, so he can always play games and watch videos in the bedroom if he didn't want to play on the sofa with the television.

He sounds incredibly selfish and a bit of a dick tbh! I think you have bigger issues than the desk. Why are you allowing yourself to be treated like that in your own home? Who made him the boss? And why’s he playing games and watching videos all the time like a teenage boy? Urgh - he sounds vile.

Tell the useless twat keeping up with the Jones’s is so yesterday & a desk is a desk; whether you buy it from Argos; Ikea or harrods, he’s being a selfish sod & needs to think about everything not just himself!!

That is a shit desk. No wonder he wants an upgrade.

Isn't there a compromise? Get to IKEA or similar and find a bigger better desk for your DH maybe one with a detachable edge or something so that when your daughter stays you've room for a fold down day bed or something. Or get a high sleeper and put desk underneath

Keykaty · 29/07/2023 14:01

Forget about the bloody desk. Just make sure you and your daughter have quality time together at a nice hotel when she visits. Leave him to mind the house and other kids while you're off having a mother/daughter few days.

Does he like and get on well with your daughter?

I wouldn't take one of those studybeds if you paid me to. 60cm deep is a console table, not a desk. You might as well gouge your eyes out with a rusty spoon because you will feel like that's what's happened after spending all day staring at a screen that is so close to your eyes.
