2nd hand cars are model specific and often things are factory fitted extras so it depends on what the original owner paid for

your budget is tight though.

have you considered a Japanese import ? We’ve just done a camper conversion and the base vehicle was excellent value and condition

Basically I was told when enquiring to a dealer he said he don’t ever get them in and to avoid and sent me to a social media group EcoBoost nightmare

In the 21+ years DH and I have been together, he has had 3 Fords and haven't had any major issues. We had a (very basic) Ford Ka for well over 10 years, kept looking to change it, but didn't bother because it was so cheap to run. We have had an eco-boost Fiesta for about 8 years and it's great. Ford parts are relatively easy to come by so servicing / repairs aren't problematic.

I possibly could increase the budget to 12k I spent yesterday looking on YouTube for car reviews as I’m quite rural there’s no big showrooms to look at . The auto lights etc are not a must just convenience.
fabia , ceed , Corsa and Astra seem to be in the ones I’m looking at does anyone know if autos are good on these. I had to rule golf off as too expensive

Ooh I hadn't realised the budget. A V40 is probably out depending on age/mileage. I'd definitely look at the Fabia which is essentially a VW underneath.

You seem to be ignoring Honda. Too expensive? They do good autos. You wouldn't want the latest Honda Jazz as it's a hybrid, but it has auto lights, auto wipers, lane control, the usual suite of parking controls, and is good on internal space and boot size. Earlier jazzes will be cheaper and may have all these, and are auto but not hybrid. Honda is regularly at the top or near the top of the Which magazine reliability tables which are based on experience of Which members.

Which Honda do you suggest? Don’t want the jazz as classed as a granny car and don’t like the look of it.
top budget is 12k but absolute no more

Fords are generally known as reliable so this seems odd to me, was he trying to sell you something else?

This. I know a lot about cars - never ever had a bad automatic Ford. Had an automatic Ford focus second hand in 2004 - sold it in 2014 with no issues.
brought a Ford b max in 2021 and it’s been wonderful - absolutely perfect. Brought it with 7000 on the clock it was £8000 from my local garage at the bottom of the road and not a single issue in 20000 miles I done in two years, it’s a fab car and the back doors slide meaning little people aka big teenagers don’t swing them open on bollards - unlike the mini!

what was his motivation -? Ford are reliable parts are readily available etc so I don’t see the issue.

I've not heard good things about the mk4 mondeo powershift gearbox. But most people put that down to lack of servicing of the gearbox

CaputDraconis · 27/07/2023 17:44

I have had an automatic ford fiesta, ecosport, kuga and puma. All great! Had no engine issues.

Next one up is the Civic. I had an older Civic for 18 years. I've not driven the newer ones.

DixonD · 27/07/2023 23:29

My Land Rover Freelander 2 has all those. Might be a bit bigger than what you’re after but it’s a nice car to drive. Heated seats, auto everything!

I've never had an auto but I did have a vectra many years back. A fantastic car that got to 176k but started to cost so I got rid. Highly recommend Vauxhall. They are a rough and ready work horse so not one to go for if you want luxury.

NutellaNut · 27/07/2023 23:36

How bizarre to have said that about Fords, they are generally considered pretty reliable and are best sellers as a result. Got an Ecoboost now, 80,000 miles from new and no issues. Last one did 130,000 from new with no problems before selling it. Generally had various Fords for donkey’s years, all excellent.

NoNonsensePotato · 27/07/2023 23:38

I recently bought a 2014 Passat Estate with over 100k on the clock as I do 600 miles a week and dont want to put the miles on my GTI. I've also got a pickup but it only does 28mpg to the Passat's 47mpg.

I bought it off my boss though who has a car workshop that tunes and modifies cars, so I knew he wasn't selling me a lemon. It's great to drive, reliable, looks nice inside and out, and has loads of tech.

QuestionableMouse · 27/07/2023 23:42

My Zafira does so take a look at Vauxhalls? The corsas are nice cars!

mrsmacmc · 27/07/2023 23:59

Mazda
Hyundai

carshopper · 28/07/2023 05:53

We looked at a Peugeot 2008 (2018) with those features under £10k. Some of the electric features like Satnav may depend what trim level of the same car you buy I think. We looked at gumtree ads and this stuff is often listed by dealers in the ad.

CornishGem1975 · 28/07/2023 08:36

The Ford Ecoboost are fine...until they're not. They go wrong in an instant, without any warning and it's a whole new engine situation.

Ford are fine - just avoid an Ecoboost engine. There are other engines.

LookItsMeAgain · 28/07/2023 18:03

@Blueybingo22 "I looked a YouTube review of ŠKODA Fabia I like it but I’m not 100 % I like the look of the outside of the car"

In all fairness, you're not going to be sitting on the outside of the car when you're driving it. It's your choice though. Best of luck with whatever you end up buying.

Do people actually think like this?
Who cares?

Blossomtoes · 28/07/2023 18:09

I loved my Toyota Auris hybrid, it was the best car I’ve ever had. It went back when we went down to one car and I nearly cried when I said goodbye to it.

I have a friend with a 21 year old Aurora! I'd definitely considere one!

You can get a Golf around your budget. Auto lights (though I think auto lights are naff, most cars do have them nowadays, the car never bloody switches it on if it’s bright ish but kissing it down and loads of road spray), nav, parking sensors etc. If you are on an auto only licence get something with a good reliable auto box first and other features next because it’s no good having the fastest clearing windscreen if it won’t get in gear (I say that as an auto owner for many years)
