Heated front windscreen is patented to Ford so not similar on other brands

HollaHolla · 26/07/2023 12:52

I've got a 13 year old Vauxhall Astra with automatic lights/wipers/heated seats. It's a manual diesel though, not automatic (never had an automatic, so can't comment on those, unfortunately.)
Mine has 135,000 on the clock, but I've had it from brand new, so I know it's been well maintained, etc. Garage said to me it should do 150,000 without too much more trouble. I've had the usual running repair things in the last couple of years - couple of tyres, brake pads, back of exhaust, bulbs, wipers, etc. I'd have another one in a shot. Not flashy, but comfortable, and reasonably priced.
Only thing is that, due to a rubbish hip, getting something a bit higher to get in and out of would be preferable.

TomAllenWife · 26/07/2023 12:52

My mini has all of those features and I love it

Popworld · 26/07/2023 12:53

I'm in a 18yr old ford mondeo. No issues .cost £500 2yrs ago . It's on 137000miles.

Heated windscreen, auto lights ,auto wipers, dimming rearview mirror,

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 26/07/2023 12:53

Vauxhall Astra. But Dh has a 13 year old ford which has never had anything wrong with it

Popworld · 26/07/2023 12:55

The problem is fords sell in high numbers. So it looks like they have big problems. Percentage wise they no more unreliable than any other car.

ResponsibleWalrus · 26/07/2023 12:57

My Skoda does but it was an optional extra so it varies from car to car.

StrawberryWater · 26/07/2023 12:57

Both my last two cars have been Vauxhall automatic gear boxes. Really like them and the auto stuff (wipers, heated seats and windows, lights etc) is great.

Popworld · 26/07/2023 12:57

Also people dont come to a forum to post about how great there care is.

Take mn for example with all the negative posts about men . No one is coming on here to post how great there Husband is.

Had 3 fords, 2 Fiestas and last one was a 2011 Focus with 1.6 Ecoboost engine - had it from 3 years old (nought with 28k miles) up until last year where it hit 120k miles and started its slow decline, never before then had it had any mechanical issues - still got £5k for it as a trade in. Best car I've owned and will happily have another and direct DS towards fords when he's learning to drive.

Fightyouforthatpie · 26/07/2023 13:01

Pretty much any car can be had with the features you want but they aren't always standard so you'll have to check each car to be sure.

elfx · 26/07/2023 13:01

My Seat Ateca has all of these, don't know how much that would be second hand though.

CaveMum · 26/07/2023 13:03

I've got a Volvo XC60 automatic with the auto lights, auto windscreen wipers etc. I do love it, my only criticism is that it can be slow pulling away sometimes but seeing as I'm not drag racing it, it's not really an issue!

An XC60 might be out of your price range, but do look at other Volvo models.

gogomoto · 26/07/2023 13:03

By the way, if you look at Mazdas, is you look at the sport nav models they are fully loaded with everything eg rear camera, automatic lights, wipers, etc. mines a 2017 model and should be about your budget. If you buy from the dealer you get a year's breakdown included but in 22 years I've not had a Mazda breakdown!

Groovee · 26/07/2023 13:05

We had to admit defeat in April when our Kia Venga was just costing too much. Went to a local car warehouse that was recommended. Had initially looked at Toyota Yaris's but the guy looked up the system and said with the sort of requirements I had, he'd recommend the Renault Captur. It had 16,000 miles on the clock, was a 68 plate. It had automatic everything, it's taken me a while to get used to those. But it's not that much bigger than my Venga was. It's a nice car to drive too.

DoraSpenlow · 26/07/2023 13:06

DH and I both have different models of Mazda. I don't trust either of them with the automatic lights. I find they are too slow to go onto dipped when something comes the other way and we are always getting flashed. Much prefer to operate light ourselves. Friend has Peugeot, I think, and has the same problem.

Copperoliverbear · 26/07/2023 13:07

I have Volkswagen always have auto lights ect and very reliable. X

JustFrustrated · 26/07/2023 13:14

A/. The ford is a reliable car brand. There's a reason it's still going and so common
B/. If the dealer is so helpful, why isn't he helping with you source the car
C/. By auto lights do you mean high beams, day light running or auto headlights? The only one of those not common is the auto high beams.

D/. Mercedes A class auto. Has all of that.

I have a Toyota yaris hybrid (not a plug-in!) which is automatic, has automatic headlights and wipers and am happy to recommend. I have had it 7 years and very economical on petrol.

I second this. Ours is over 10 years old and still going strong, no issues whatsoever, and very economical

No I honestly think he was being helpful the dealership has been there 60 years family owned etc. I was asking if he gets any in please contact me as heart set on focus titanium but he told me all about it EcoBoost engines no matter what age aren’t reliable, I since found the group online and lots of people have had issues even with newer ones so it’s put me off, what other engines do focus have after 2016 that isn’t eco boost ?
He didn’t try and sell me anything .
i won’t rule out focus altogether but I wouldn’t buy one with that engine, I’m looking for other small hatchback with the extras titanium offers heated windscreen etc
Going to look into golf’s and Audi a3 so far
thank you

It's not all ecoboost engines, the 1.0 litre version had issues around 2011 - 2014 or so, the 1.6 version also had some issues with 2017-2019 models. But virtually all manufacturers produce shit engines from time to time e.g., BMWs awful N47 range, VWs problematic TDI in 2010/11, Audi's oil devouring TFSI, Mazda's wankle monstrosity, etc.

Also a good engine doesn't mean a good autobox, they're separate components. However, like engines some are reliable and notoriously shit.

That used to be the case but lots of other manufacturers have it now. It might not be their exact technology but heated windscreens are available.

OP my friend has had her focus ecoboost for years, never had any issues with it. I sometimes think car dealers get something in their head and nothing will dissuade them, lots have personal preference on either manufacturers or specific models. Millions of ecoboost 3 cylinder engine cars have been sold across the world.

I also am asking for your clarification on auto lights? Auto high beam to low beam or just them switching on when it is dark? I have day time running lights but still just leave my car headlights on all the time.

Nat6999 · 26/07/2023 13:31

I've had 5 Fords & never had a problem with the engine, other than that something from the VW family, VW, Seat, Audi or Skoda but don't go for the basic model if you want things like automatic lights, wipers etc.

TenderDandelions · 26/07/2023 13:33

All cars I've had since 2004 have had auto headlights and auto wipers - Peugeot, VW, Honda, BMW, Vauxhall. My DH now drives a Toyota that has them and my BIL has Kia's that also do.

Stick with Japanese (Honda, Toyota, etc) or Korean (Kia) in terms of engine reliability.

There is a difference between auto headlights that just turn on when it's dark or raining and auto full beam for use on country lanes. I trust the first, but not the second.

BigFloppa · 26/07/2023 13:38

It's the 1.0 ecoboost that was problematic. I don't think they do that one in newer cars now.
