to think the penny hasn't dropped yet, for many people, that the trade in new petrol and diesel cars is really ending in 6 years

I think the price of second hand cars will go through the roof, at first, when new cars are no longer available, and people buying new homes now really do need to be factoring in where they are going to charge an electric car, and all sorts of preparations and plans are simply not being made

YANBU - we need to be planning and preparing, as individuals and society.
YABU- we don't need to think about it.

Hybrid cars are due to be made new til 2035 so surely there will still be the need for fuel stations for those? (As well as older ICE cars)

Exactly. That's why it's a complete non issue and why education is more important than anything else. I'm in my 50's. I'll be well over 60 by the time the last hybrid is sold. If I buy one, I'll be able to drive it into my late 70's and am likely to be either dead or giving up driving anyway.

However, I already drive an EV so is really interesting seeing all the panic and insane comments.

Ukrainebaby23 · 25/07/2023 22:52

Weren't all non dab radios going to be phased out by 2020 or something, that never really took off did it.

Though I like dab.

KajsaKavat · 25/07/2023 22:53

We are maybe hoping they will ck e tk their senses and invest in hydrogen cars and not the stupid electricity which needs an awful lot of infrastructure

THIS! ^

Absolutely this

But also second hand car prices are already sky high. I think people might be hoarding them like loo paper.

A lot of posters are making my point for me

We need to be planning for this - it is all very well sitting there typing out your complaints about how this really isn't going to work for you in your life.

That is exactly what I have started this thread about

We have to stop using fossil fuel, we are going to stop using fossil fuel, there is no discussion or argument about that.

One step in this transformation is the ban of all sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030

If this is going to cause you issues - now is the time to plan for it.

My whole point is - this is going to happen- some people are not in a position right now where they could cope with this change - so they need to make plans, and adjust their lives as appropriate

You have 6 years - if you are making decisions about where to live, where to work what schools to put your children in, in the next 6 years, then make those decisions with this in mind.

People are not doing so - hence my thread

It’s not going to happen in 6 years.

you can keep saying it will all you like but anyone with a functioning brain can see it’s not.

Thosepeskyseagulls · 25/07/2023 22:57

I’ve never owned a new car in my life so this doesn’t bother me.

Lunar270 · 25/07/2023 22:58

bellac11 · 25/07/2023 22:47

What models are they?

I research from time to time to see if we would be able to practically have an EV, each time I find the range not enough and charging time too slow for the money we might be able to afford (with a massive loan)

Hyundai IONIQ 5 and 6
Kia EV 6
Genesis GV60

They'll add about 300 miles in 18 minutes.

These are pretty expensive but the technology is flowing down all the time, especially for Hyundai and Kia. But cheaper EVs can add a lot of miles in 20-30 minutes. I appreciate this is still too long for some people but in time this will improve.

Cucucucu · 25/07/2023 22:59

It’s not that it hasn’t dropped it’s just some of us really need to delay it as much as possible . Those of us rurally are royally screwed .

noglow · 25/07/2023 21:40

They haven't thought about people who live in flats

Flats and terraces where you just grab a space where you can. Politicians forget we don't all have a private driveway!

BlueRabbitYellow · 25/07/2023 23:00

I believe there will have to be a greater choice of electric vehicle for independent travel. There will be better, safer electric bikes, small two person lightweight e cars, driverless pod type vehicles. All these can be cheap and quick to charge.

Scaraben · 25/07/2023 23:00

We have an EV. I think people get really hung up on not being able to charge at home but in reality I almost never charge at home. I charge it up at work, charging stations on long journeys, in car parks while I do my shopping etc. I live quite rurally and it works fine. But the infrastructure needs to be consistent and we have a good charging system at my work.

I do wonder if there will be an increase in vehicle imports. It's not really that tricky to drive a LHD car on our roads. I inherited an American muscle car a long time ago and drove it with no problems for years!

chaosmaker · 25/07/2023 23:01

Hydrogen is the way forward anyway. Too expensive in many ways to keep making electric vehicles and batteries, including in rare materials. Same as all these log burners people had. They are not green in any way. I think that they'll be insisting they are all got rid of in a few years and possibly also replaces with hydrogen. A Welsh company, riversimple has already trialled some of their hydrogen cars for a year. You rent the cars from them and they provide everything including insurance. No idea how much they charge but even the tyres are designed not to give off so many particulates when braking. Also need to have free public transport that is nationalised. The money to run this would have to come from taxes but would definitely encourage more people out of cars. The cars that are then on the road would be the ones that people really need for their jobs. My job is taking people out into the community for various reasons, all of whom are disabled in some way. I'd much rather be driving a hydrogen car though and be heating the house with a hydrogen boiler. Just can't afford it at the moment. Care workers get a pittance for the work we do.

Troyton · 25/07/2023 23:01

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/07/2023 22:44

So do I. EVs are the Betamax of the automotive industry!

I think this will be the case too, some of the first cars built over 120 years ago were electric, but were eclipsed by petrol, i still associate electric with milk floats and fork lift trucks.

I think another technology will take over, and it won't be that far down the line.

Cucucucu · 25/07/2023 23:01

AgathaSpencerGregson · 25/07/2023 22:35

I have a better solution. Urban dwellers to be banned from car ownership altogether unless they have a disability or other compelling health reason. Rural residents carry on as they are.
No need for private transport if you have the facilities of the town on your doorstep is there

I agree

OdeToBarney · 25/07/2023 23:02

Given VW can't build a hybrid car in the space of 20 months (and I know a lot of other makes are suffering the same horrendous order to delivery delays) I'd be VERY surprised if this happened.

bellac11 · 25/07/2023 23:02

My word, I had to do a double take at those prices for those models

I wouldnt go above 10k and that would be really pushing it, its going to be around the 6k mark

Plus those cars are SUVs and I dont want one of those

BaroldBalonz · 25/07/2023 23:02

I wonder if you'll be able to write a cheque to buy a new electric car?

If I remember rightly, cheques were going to be withdrawn in about 2017, but guess what?

It changed.

It’s really expensive to charge anywhere but at home , plus will be even worse when pay per mile tax is introduced.

Kazzyhoward · 25/07/2023 23:04

2030 will be pushed back. It's simply never going to happen because the infrastructure isn't in place for people to charge their cars. There will be millions of people without drives who can't charge on the roadside, so will continue to need petrol/diesel cars. Plenty of other countries aren't banning ICE cars, so they'll continue to be manufactured for those countries, meaning there'll be a supply of new cars into the UK too, WHEN, the government announce the 2030 deadline is being pushed back, first to 2035 and then probably to 2040!

Lunar270 · 25/07/2023 23:04

KajsaKavat · 25/07/2023 22:53

We are maybe hoping they will ck e tk their senses and invest in hydrogen cars and not the stupid electricity which needs an awful lot of infrastructure

Unlike hydrogen of course, which takes huge amount of energy to produce. We only have a handful of places to fill up with hydrogen so the infrastructure is a lot worse than electric, where we already have this everywhere!

People alway talk about hydrogen but hydrogen is no more efficient than petrol or diesel. Engines are typically 30% efficient so other than wasting huge amount of energy to produce, cars burn through it at a ridiculous rate. Electric motors are about 98% efficient so what goes into the battery is pretty much what you get out. If you can charge via solar it's free. If you charge overnight, you help to reduce overproduction and balance the grid.

Technically, electric has far more benefits for our future of energy use.

That's fair enough. It's too expensive for me too but prices will come down.

MG are leading the way with smaller, cheaper cars and they will force other manufacturers to be more competitive. Some smaller EV's will still do 300 miles and charge quickly. They just need to get on the used market.

I dont know how thats allowed to be honest

It’s not - someone was sued for it in London last year from memory (quite severe injuries).

Anyone leaving wires around like that is a grade A bell end.

nebulae · 25/07/2023 23:12

It also strikes me that this issue will disproportionately affect women, from a safety point of view. If women can no longer afford a car they'll be forced to walk or cycle or use public transport and we all know none of those modes are safe. Particularly at night. What are the government going to do to address this? Bugger all, as usual.

Baconisdelicious · 25/07/2023 23:12

OP, you're telling people to make life decisions today based on a potential life they may be living in 6 years time. My life has changed massively in the last 6 years - I quit a full time job to care for an elderly parent, she died, I changed job as a result, now work 8 miles away when previously it was 3 miles. My children will have left home in 6 years but 6 years ago the eldest was just starting secondary. 4 years ago my youngest was diagnosed with a life-changing condition....you can't know what your life will be in 6 years time

My work chargers are free. I have a charge place scotland card and most of the chargers I use are free or extremely cheap. Aldi's EV points are free as are many in council car parks. Sometimes I play a "what's the lowest pence per mile I can do this week" game with myself. I do expect this will change in time though
