Cleaner dunked sandwich press in water

She wanted to clean it and she washed it in the kitchen sink like you would wash a plate. I couldn't believe when I I saw it and she went on to reassure me she does it all the time at other customers houses and the piece of electrical is fine.

I told her that if it stops working I'll have to deduct it from her wage. AIBU? You wouldn't give the toaster a bath.

She's an excellent cleaner but could do with respecting boundaries a bit more. She'd previously water plants when I had just watered them and so some died, feed the cat, bin stuff that wasn't to be binned, ripped off a piece of wood from a floorboard and a few other things. I tell her after when something wasn't ok, but there is always something new and unexpected she does.
I'm always around and she never asks 'is it ok if...'.

Can you not find a new cleaner if you are that unhappy with her services?

noglow · 25/07/2023 19:11

Find a new cleaner I'd this one annoys you

Does your sandwhich toaster work?

WilkinsonM · 25/07/2023 19:12

Wow
fire her! She's an idiot. Binning your things, feeding your animals, damaging your floor and destroying your sandwich press are all bonkers and some of them sackable by themselves.
you can't turn on the sandwich press now. Bin it and chalk it up to experience when you've sacked her.

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:12

I haven't tried it yet. Though I leave it to dry for a day or so.

I wouldn’t take the money from her wages 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure she didn’t do it on purpose.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 25/07/2023 19:13

I’d get a new cleaner. It’s a job where you really need to be on the same wavelength.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 25/07/2023 19:14

It sounds like you're generally not happy with her, so I'd find another.

Mine has done occasional things like wash a non stick pan with a steel scrubber, feel the cat etc but she's generally brilliant and I'd be lost without her so I'd never threaten to deduct her pay. I do make sure I never leave a dirty non stick out though!

AlanJohnsonsBeamer · 25/07/2023 19:14

Hmm, dunking a sandwich toaster...that's a new one to me 😂

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:16

I might have to. I put down a few things to 'everyone makes mistakes' but it's a bit much now. She doesn't repeat the same mistakes but I do always wonder now what she'll do next that will shock me. It's just a shame as he cleaning is absolutely brilliant.

I'm pretty sure you're not entitled to just deduct stuff from her wages unless it's agreed beforehand.

But you're clearly unhappy with her work so why not just find someone else?

Paperbagsaremine · 25/07/2023 19:17

Oh dear.
We parted ways with our last cleaner after the questionable choices became too much.
She was hired to clean (ofc) but the neighbours told us they'd seen her taking our dog for a walk! The 30+kg, high chase drive dog...
There was a whole other bunch of stuff - using our washer and dryer (and indeed computer, before we wised up and started locking the screen when we left it) without asking, leaving more and more of her stuff in the cupboard between visits...
Cleaners are meant to make your life better. Not "what now?!" stressful.

We got a Roomba vacuum and mop instead.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/07/2023 19:17

Get a new cleaner, your one sounds thick as mince.

Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets · 25/07/2023 19:18

Cleaner here. In 10 years I have only broken a lot brush and a sweeping broom. Both from too much vigour!

Debini · 25/07/2023 19:13

Well she did because she thinks it's acceptable to do it. She sounds a bit gone out to me not sure why the
OP is still employing her.

Daphnis156 · 25/07/2023 19:21

Sandwich press?
Is that a sandwich toaster, as in the 1970s?

Anyway if this woman irritates you so much, sack her.

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:22

@Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets good on you. Previous cleaners have broken plates etc but these things just happen and I would never think to take it off their wage.

With my current cleaner I feel a bit helpless, which was why I jumped straight to ' I might have to take it off your wage'.

Yes she did.
She placed it into water to clean it. It didn't accidentally fall into a bucket while she was cleaning a worktop.

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:23

@Debini the toaster didn't fall into the kitchen sink by accident. So yes, she absolutely did it with intention but didn't think it through. I don't even know if or when it is safe to switch on now.

A sandwich press
You are in the USA?

What is the piece of electrical that you refer to? Part of a sandwich press?

JMSA · 25/07/2023 19:25

I'd never expect my cleaner to clean our sandwich toaster. It just seems a bit, I don't know, disrespectful maybe.

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:25

@RegentCafe one of these toastie makers or whatever you call them

A sandwich press isnt a toaster?
What was it that was washed?

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:26

She pointed out she didn't let water get to the plug which she seemed quite proud of.

@RegentCafe one of these toastie makers or whatever you call them

They wash fine- been washing mine for 35 years and going strong
(but they are not a toaster or a sandwich press)

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:26

@RegentCafe what are they?
