Cleaner dunked sandwich press in water

Twatalert · 25/07/2023 19:10

She wanted to clean it and she washed it in the kitchen sink like you would wash a plate. I couldn't believe when I I saw it and she went on to reassure me she does it all the time at other customers houses and the piece of electrical is fine.

I told her that if it stops working I'll have to deduct it from her wage. AIBU? You wouldn't give the toaster a bath.

She's an excellent cleaner but could do with respecting boundaries a bit more. She'd previously water plants when I had just watered them and so some died, feed the cat, bin stuff that wasn't to be binned, ripped off a piece of wood from a floorboard and a few other things. I tell her after when something wasn't ok, but there is always something new and unexpected she does.
I'm always around and she never asks 'is it ok if...'.

I hope she'd unplugged it😮

@Troyton thanks, that got me now. Are you saying I risk causing it to overheat and worse?

Honestly it's so daft. I will make clearer lists for future cleaners. I didn't think I had to point out to not wash an electrical appliance in a sink. Id probably feel insulted if someone felt I needed to be told. I honestly don't think this is a reasonable thing to point out to a presumably reasonable person. I might as well make clear that they shouldn't drink bleach.

Tbf there seems to be a few people on this thread who need to be told as well. Properly weird that was Hmm so youve probably done them a service.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/07/2023 05:57

I think you’re right to give her notice and it would be kind to pay her a couple of weeks. She sounds in some ways like a cleaner that I had. It was little by little but in the end she made me incredibly uncomfortable in my own home. She was unreliable, used to spend a lot of time upstairs (I was home and suspect she was skiving as not much was done), continued to watch tv on her phone at high volume whilst downstairs distracting me, talked about my house being her house, insisted on talking to me and had zero boundaries about what she’d talk to me about.

I’d already had enough of her changing days because she was tired and had been very understanding of her. Eg looking after her, making her mum, who didn’t want to come out to collect her when she became ill at my house for taking a painkiller she knew would affect her badly… I’d offered otc cocodamol but she didn’t tell me codeine made her ill.

The tv on her phone incident pushed me over the edge so I sacked her. I get it, I also felt in some way obliged to her as she was a nice person and had manipulated me in some way - I’m disabled and chronically ill, which I think she took advantage of. This is now your enough moment.

You think she dunked an electrical appliance in water to wash it by accident?

I meant that she didn’t break it on purpose not that she washed it accidentally, sorry I wasn’t clear.

Missing the point but we bought one with removable plates which is amazing.

Mine too, OP replace it with one with removable plates.

@RegentCafe they have lots of names, toastie maker, panini maker, jaffle, flat toaster.

Some are designed for sliced bread, others for paninis, as I said mine has different plates so it can make toasties or be used like a George Forman grill or to make waffles.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 26/07/2023 06:11

Amazing, plus having the different plates are great. This is the one we have Salter EK2143 3-in-1 Snack Maker - Deep Fill Waffle Iron, Sandwich Panini Press & Toastie Maker, Interchangeable Non-Stick Plates, 900W, Indicator Lights, Automatic Temperature & Cool Touch Handle amzn.eu/d/7rlAgK7

My partner fully washes our mini George Foreman in the sink. Is that a similar bit of equipment?

If you plug it in to an electrical socket then yeh, it’s the same and you’re really lucky you haven’t died. Surely there are cleaning instructions in the manual?

Well, I did let her go. I feel awful and I'm sure so does she but cannot risk having her again.

I wouldn’t take the money from her wages 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure she didn’t do it on purpose.

Of course she did it on purpose-she's already told OP that she's done it in other places. You don't "accidentally" wash an electrical item.

BCSurvivor · 26/07/2023 10:52

I think it was the right decision to let her go.
But I really hope you didn't let her go AND deduct money for he sandwich press from her last wages aswell.
Yes, it was a stupid and dangerous thing to do, and she shouldn't have done it BUT it wasn't done maliciously.

Can’t say we use it often but definitely going to have him stop that. The confidence in which he did it, I just presumed it was fine to do. I don’t do it that way myself.

ArcticSkewer · 26/07/2023 16:12

I suppose to be fair there are some electrical items you can part submerge in water to wash.

I wash my stick blender for example, but don't fully submerge it. Even then it makes me twitchy - and I am happy to stick it plugged in into the soup ... go figure!

TRexTara · 26/07/2023 16:53

Abouttoblow · 25/07/2023 20:33

I can't believe the amount of posters who think submerging an electrical appliance in a sink of water to clean it is OK.

MN is seriously batshit at times.

This. She could have caused an accident or blown the electric if the OP hadn't realised.

Doesn't it worry you that you have a bloke with no common sense? That's scary that man

TRexTara · 26/07/2023 17:00

Another thing I can never understand about these cleaner threads is that the OP always knows the intricate details of the cleaners life and all their problems. So then feels even more guilty about putting their fit down. Surely they are there to work not tell you their whole life history?

Maybe they do it so that the employer would feel guilty about sacking them? Like OP is.

YABVU OP, because I now really want a cheese and ham toastie, and I have all the ingredients but no sandwich press. 😞

Ah that's just shit. They don't come out the same when you just grill or toast them. I feel you. I'm wondering the possibilities of a very cheesy sandwich with mushrooms entrapped in the deliciousnousness.

TRexTara · 26/07/2023 22:00

Now is also a good time to ponder what Americans mean by a grilled cheese? I'm thinking that our ideas of grilled or toasted or fried are in opposite world, as is often the case with a nation that plays rugby and expects the whole world to call it football even though they are touching the bloody ball the whole time and call actual football soccer. Upside down world.

What is a grilled cheese anyway? Please explain in detail.

Ourshoddyhouse · 26/07/2023 22:02

In my head grilled cheese = cheese on toast 🤔

But it doesn't look like that in films . It looks like fried bread with some stringy cheese inside. Which is a bit yuck.

I think Americans have a lot of explaining to do.
