Hot and bored on holiday

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

Lol at this. I don't like the heat and am still wilting from a business trip to the Caribbean last week. I'm about to leave for our holiday home on the Atlantic coat of West Ireland. It is currently about 16 degrees there and tipping it down. I cannot wait to get there and not be hot anymore.

I've got load of craft supplies there. I've downloaded a couple of tv series to binge watch (can't rely on our terrible rural internet). It's in the middle of nowhere so no restaurants so, will eat in most nights (toasties here I come).

we've got a couple of nights out planned with local family and I will walk down to the local bar when the weather permits but apart from that I will stay in wrapped up in cosy clothes. I will be as happy as Larry. I might even light a fire. #HolidayGoals

Dearly89 · 24/07/2023 15:03

Go home

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:04

Even if I played golf it would be too hot!

I don’t give a shit if others would be happy in my shoes.

DH would not go for a day trip anywhere even if I wanted to - I’d be doing that on my own.

No different holidays ever - couldn’t justify it financially . Staying at home and exploring the bueyakful countryside where we live in UK would be perfect next July .

I think I’ve made my point anyway. DB hasn’t left to play golf yet….

Presumably Op would have to take kids with her if husband is out sporting though?
If kids are happily enjoying pool etc I can see why it’s easier for Op to just suck it up and stay put.
Meanwhile her DH is having a great time doing exactly what he wants and people think Op is spoiled if she complains.
Like I say I know someone who used to holiday like this and it wouldn’t have been my cup of tea despite it looking lovely on paper - no easy way to sightsee, no cafes to walk to, stuck in villa supervising kids in pool. The DH out for hours. The narrative she’s having a lovely time reading by pool.

Are you not allowed to leave the resort to, you know, visit the country?

ITS TOO HOT!
At least our house is on a hillside with aircon…
Goung out would be worse in this heat.

But yes normally I do even if on my own

Actually snorted reading this, while eating my left over roast dinner cos I cannot afford packed lunch stuff this week!

If your left over roast dinner is from the MN chicken farm then you'll be good for the rest of the week!

booksandbrooks · 24/07/2023 15:09

Get in the pool.

Lorrries · 24/07/2023 15:11

So you fly out to a (obviously completely unnecessary) second home multiple times a year? And have a pool and aircon? You're certainly doing way more than your share of the heavy lifting in causing global warming, aren't you? You'll certainly get no sympathy from me if/when your second home burns down.

TraumaSurvivor · 24/07/2023 15:12

If there's a pool then get in it! Looks are your friend of you're hot. Or better still, a beach!

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:12

Exactly this. Thanks for understanding. The kids would whinge anyway as they only want to hang out in the pool.
Anyway I’m back in the house after 20 mins frying by the pool under a shade. Shall find a Netflix box set as a few suggested.

DH can stuff golf today… he’s on pool duty.

If you own the house then can’t you just house swap it next year for somewhere you want to go?
Or rent it out and stay home instead and use proceeds for day trips.

TraumaSurvivor · 24/07/2023 15:12

Blasted autocorrect! That was meant to say pools are your friend

tt9 · 24/07/2023 15:16

tbf I would never go to Spain in July. way too hot. I love visiting in winter months

Sunnydaysareahead · 24/07/2023 15:16

I wouldn't like to be somewhere in the blazing hot. We have been to these kind of places between Christmas and New Year / October or May half-term when it's pleasantly sunny and not stifling and you can actually get out and do stuff - is that an option for you next year?

Plus there is a separate issue here I definitely would not want my DH out doing his hobby whilst we're on holiday and me stuck at a holiday home with the kids

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:16

Thanks folk who have made good suggestions.

to those hard of hearing…
The pool is like a bath, it’s hot in the shade. It’s Tom hot to go out.

Signing out as don’t need a kicking when feeling low.

Trip to the beach for a cooling dip in the sea and some ice cream?

Sending thoughts and prayers to you at this difficult time OP.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 get in the pool op!

Family I know are currently on a very different family holiday (minus his bike 😆 )
I suspect foot been put down by mum plus fact kids now older and also bored hanging around pool all day while dad indulges in his hobby for hours.

ivycastle · 24/07/2023 15:18

I understand where you're coming from, OP. Sounds like your DH has pretty much dragged you on his idea of a holiday that you were never really that keen on anyway. Not everyone likes sitting around in the heat all day.

Stillcantbebothered · 24/07/2023 15:19

JMSA · 24/07/2023 13:12

Yes, it is slightly tone deaf!

The crab mentality in the UK is ridiculous. We’re in the rain so you have no right to complain about being bored in Spain.

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 15:19

I love the suggestion of a house swap or local day trips. DH is having his perfect holiday..
Next year I’ll say no to July / August. His idea of compromise is coming at the end of August.

No is a complete sentence … :-)

It seems like the real issue is that your DH is completely dominating the decision about what you do and where you go on holiday, and you don't even like it.

Why do you let him do that?

Ohmylovejune · 24/07/2023 15:22

I know it's extra warm but it's always stupid hot in late July! It's why we go in April, May or June latest.

You've just been caught out by a hotter than normal year which is always a possibility.

lavenderlou · 24/07/2023 15:23

Sell the house and find a holiday for next time where there is something for all of you to enjoy?

Or DH takes the kids to the house by himself?
