Hot and bored on holiday

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 13:09

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

No i don’t play golf . I enjoy a gentle bike ride on the flat but I’m not really a cyclist. I do like raquet Sports when it’s not so hot.

I’ve spent the last few years watching the kids on holiday while DH does his hobbies. He actually talks about retiring here in a few years time which would be a recipe for disaster. I’m much happier in the UK .

I have restarted my Duolingo account as normally do some Spanish to keep myself busy while here . A few good suggestions thanks all.

I can easily read a book in a day if I'm sitting out in my back garden, and that would be over the course of the afternoon/evening?

So you read slow...not sure what your point is?

I can read a book a day when I am on holiday, sometimes more, read them all in their entirety.

mondaytosunday · 24/07/2023 14:32

I have a house in Spain. I don't go there this time of year (haven't actually been since pre covid). We don't stay at the villa all day though (lovely pool and acreage). That would be boring. We plan little day trips, go to markets in nearby towns, a bit of shopping in the winding streets of villages, eating out too., and the supermarket fish counter is amazing - plus we don't have air on so nice place to cool down for a bit! But yes it's hot, and that requires frequent stops to have something cold!

Orangeradiorabbit · 24/07/2023 14:32

A few ideas, as being on a holiday you don't enjoy sucks. No one would like that despite the 'tongue in cheek' comments.

Do you have a laptop or tablet? Could you (subscribe to if not already done and) go on Netflix/prime/YouTube and watch a really juicy series? I'm enjoying "and just like that". "Succession" is also good.

Could you get up first thing in the morning and do some light exercise while it's a bit cooler (e.g. yoga off YouTube, walk on the beach, golf)?

Could you do some "theme" dinner nights at home or a cocktail-making evening one day (e.g. Spanish theme: make tapas, drink local wine, watch a "Spanish" film - like Ferdinand . Italian theme: make pasta drink Italian wine, watch an "Italian" film - like eat pray love).

Could you make the most of continental habits and have dinner at a restaurant super late, when it will hopefully be cooler.

Is there a funky/classy bar you could go to - this may feel different to a nightclub- Even in a posh 5* hotel.

Look for places with air-conditioning- bars, restaurants. Could you go to the cinema and watch Barbie, Oppenheimer, Mission Impossible one night?

Mum1976Mum · 24/07/2023 14:33

Pretend you’re in a sauna and sweat off a few pounds 🤐

Twinsmummy1812 · 24/07/2023 14:37

I’m with you OP. A couple of friends had holiday homes on the continent and my DH and I talked about it because it seemed a very easy thing to have when children are small. But, I’m like you. I don’t like sunbathing, I get hot and bothered. I’m certainly not exercising when it’s boiling hot so what does that leave? All friends sold theirs when children got to teen age because they didn’t want to go any more.

Do you also get to go on holiday to places that you enjoy and where he does the majority of parenting?

Blanketpolicy · 24/07/2023 14:37

Snap. Which is why I am as happy as a pig in shit in wet 16 degrees Scotland. When I want to go out I will put a rain jacket on and will enjoy it. Rain isn't ideal but manageable and much preferable to 30+ degrees - I would be hiding indoors for the whole holiday!

What on earth possessed you to agree to this holiday?

WorkCleanRepeat · 24/07/2023 13:20

You need a better book 😉

Perhaps
"Rewire your Mindset"
"Women who Think Too Much"
"The Art of Happiness"
"How to love yourself, be happy with your life, and heal negative thoughts"

zerofuchsgivenTBH · 24/07/2023 14:41

Wintering and Yellowface both great reads

pontipinemum · 24/07/2023 14:41

Is your DH spending any time with you and DC? It does sound a bit boring TBH. And I'm in rainy Ireland where we are on the verge of being washed away.

Is there anywhere near by you could go for the day?

The middle paragraph summarises your real problem OP and I think that other posters would have been more sympathetic had you included that in your original post. It sounds a bit dismal tbh no matter how much disposable income you have. You need to have a good talk when you get back to the UK, especially if he’s like that at home too. Meanwhile, get thee into the pool!

Peony654 · 24/07/2023 14:43

Excuse me whilst I get my tiny violin out… ridiculous post

StillWantingADog · 24/07/2023 14:45

Well if your dh abandons you every holiday and you don’t like just sitting around in the heat then you absolutely get to say that you’re doing something of your choosing next time.

Wheresmyrobe · 24/07/2023 14:45

Prize for most time deaf thread goes to...

ClairDeLaLune · 24/07/2023 14:46

Boo hoo, poor you. How about getting out in an air-conditioned car and seeing some of Spain? Or putting the news on and realising how lucky you are? Only boring people are bored, do something about it.

Omg poor you sounds awful 😳😒 I feel this post was made to annoy people so you can get some entertainment.

Notmygreen · 24/07/2023 14:50

Why not to learn golf? Or going to the swimming pool with your children?
Learn Spanish with the locals? Join a cooking Spanish class? Visit tge shopping centre and have your hair cut or any other beauty treatment cheaper than in UK?

Dixiechickonhols · 24/07/2023 14:53

I agree you’d have got very different responses if you’d posted I’m having rubbish holiday as dh is lying in bed or out cycling/golf for hours daily and I’m stuck with the kids.
It’s your DH enjoying his holiday and rest of you having to fit in.

I read slow - what??? I was referring to the poster who made a comment about the number of books the OP had read. I have a degree in English Literature and I've always read fast lol!

Are you reading Ladybird books or the Famous Five? 🙄🙄😂

roundtable · 24/07/2023 14:56

I read the op differently to most I think.

To me it seems that op has gone on holiday and yet again her husband has buggered off to do what he likes every day and leaves his wife at home to look after the kids.

It being hot is the side issue I think.

Op, your husband sounds quite selfish. Does he spend a lot of time on his hobbies at home too? Possibly easier when you have friends and family round to fill the gap.

Is there an expat group for your area if your Spanish isnt great? It's worth trying to make some friends to do activities with. I would get booked into a course back in the UK to learn Spanish properly though too.

mainbrochus · 24/07/2023 14:57

Or ‘the power of now’ by E Tolle.

Op’s pity party is an example of how you can have lots of ‘stuff’ but still be miserable as you are the lowest ranking person in the pack and no one takes any notice of what you want (including yourself)

DisquietintheRanks · 24/07/2023 14:57

Are you not allowed to leave the resort to, you know, visit the country?

deydododatdodontdeydo · 24/07/2023 14:59

Totally understand, OP.
I too would have a blazing hot holiday where there's nothing to do.
I solved this issue by not buying a holiday home in a notoriously hot mediterranean country.
