Hot and bored on holiday

So I’m definitely being a bit unreasonable . We are lucky enough to have a holiday house in Spain- sports resort . Golf/ cycling max DH loves it. We have a pool and aircon.

I’m perimenopausal with heat intolerance and overweight. We’ve been here 5 days now. I’ve read 3 books , bored of lying on a sun bed reading. It’s too hot to eat out in the evening . Even DH and the kids were hot and sticky in the evening at a restaurant. After an hour we were all keen to come home.

It’s too hot to go anywhere and do anything. The kids are happy in the pool.
I’m too old to be in a nightclub, I don’t want to watch sport or Jeremy Fucking Clarkson …

I hate cards and board games. Might have to resort to a jigsaw….

So i’m grumpy and drinking cold rose wine on the patio…… Cheer me up mumsnet please !

Can I just clarify - you own the home you are staying in OP? If so then you and your DH probably need to have a serious conversation in respect of management for future years - eg visit your home during the holidays October - May and let it out the rest of the time? Or would you consider selling so that you don't feel you need to go there every holiday to make use of it ?

If you enjoyed the heat previously , maybe you will again post-menopause, but I think summers are due to get hotter .

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 19:45

@goingslightlyinsane thanks for a lovely list of things to watch.

Sadly the pool area is no music allowed . But I do exercise in the pool even though it’s very warm.

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea yes that’s right. It’s lovely in May / October but I can’t see myself agreeing to come for more than a week next summer/ maybe beginning of Sept if at all . We are tied into school holidays. We need to rent it out next summer / most of the year so we can afford a different holiday if that’s what we want to do. Seriously conversations.

The ‘curry’ was inedible so that was a good start to a diet… I’ve retreated to the patio as too grumpy for human consumption.

Get hammered on Rioja now OP, the hangover you'll be trying to cure tomorrow will pass the day. 😂

letthemalldoone · 24/07/2023 20:07

Headphones maybe?

I don't think I'd like to go to the same place every year anyway. There are so very many locations to visit and flights to take lol!

I think the only place I've been that I keep wanting to go back to is the western Costa del Sol.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/07/2023 20:26

Sitting drinking rose and reading sounds lovely! What do you want to be doing?

Just get really nice things that take no cooking to eat in your villa and chill.

Thoughts and prayers

snort 🤣

Find a decent restaurant with air-con. Go late, like the natives. Most shops have air-con, having lived in Spain, unless you’re somewhere really out of the way. Go shopping, get in the pool.

I agree - it's OK if you are able to have multiple holidays but not if it's your one holiday a year .

Is it Estepona you like? (Most western place I can think on C-D-S)

Estepona and beyond - San Luis de Sabinillas, Puerto de la Duquesa, San Pedro de Alcantara. With a mooch in the Old Town in Marbella and a walk round the harbour in Puerto Banus (though Duquesa has a lovely little harbour too!). Mijas is nice though a bit hilly - not keen on Torremolinos/Fuengirola/Benalmadea - it's less touristy further west. Love it there!

PrincessofWellies · 24/07/2023 20:48

Cadiz, Tarifa, Jerez are worth a visit if you have access to an a/c car.

There's also the most amazing beach at Bolonia.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/07/2023 20:55

@letthemalldoone
Ooh thanks for the tips - have holidayed a couple of times in Estepona but haven't been to the other less well known places you mention . We go to the wider area quite frequently as it's so easy and decent weather out of season (would hate in the summer)

We would always hire a car when we go - must put those locations on the list!! We've also driven to Seville, Gibraltar and into Portugal. Went to Valencia this year for a change and loved it.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/07/2023 20:58

@letthemalldoone I love Marbella- both the old town and the posers paradise in Puerto Banus. I know these days it's probably a bit old hat but it has an awful lot going for it as a base-and a terrific range of accommodation of all types. love Malaga too

We discovered Sabinillas years when the £ was really strong against the euro. Five of us had lovely tapas and drinks for something like 17 euro! Ahhh. The good old days!! DD1 loves Malaga but have only ever been to the airport so far!! Nerja is also on my list...

I'm nearly afraid to say I love Marbella lol, as it seems such a cliche, but I do too!

Crikeyalmighty · 24/07/2023 21:03

@LakieLady I was going to offer a similar swap- a week in our 3 bed stone built semi on the edge of Bath next to national trust land. Wellies and north face hooded anoraks also hugely on trend here at moment

Crikeyalmighty · 24/07/2023 21:06

@letthemalldoone Strangely I had a friend who was always taking the piss about it -- she's very Dubai etc- she went and admitted she thoroughly enjoyed it too - at 1/3 of the price of Dubai !! It's one of those places that gives me a lift!

olympicsrock · 24/07/2023 21:48

Well I drive down to the beach 15 mins away and sat watching the surfers in the moonlight. Took a little dip , felt human and came home. Going to watch tv this evening in a better mood.

Sounds lovely, can you make this the daily routine that saves the fortnight? Maybe a nightly moonlit dip would make the days more bearable.

Have you been to Cartagena? We stopped off on our boat there and really enjoyed it.

I haven't - yet! I love boat trips anywhere! I love the sea - shame I'm too chicken to swim!!!

@CrikeyalmightyDubai has never really appealed to me. Maybe one day.

@olympicsrock that sounds idyllic. Maybe you could do the same and watch the sunrise? (I'd never be out of my bed that early 🙄) Now my nose is tripping me to know where you are...!!

Just booked a weekend break to Cartagena after reading this and googling, I have booked to go in September for 3 nights via last minute.com, I will let you know what I think on my return :)

Laboheme78 · 25/07/2023 17:58

I think you are probably unhappy with other things in your life and as a result you are not able to enjoy what should really be a lovely thing.
